She also has her back to a door, one that she seems to be trying to keep closed.]

Okay. Okay. Um, I did not sign up for this, okay? Okay. There are... things out there. It ate one of the little flying guys. Then there were more and then it got bigger and then...

[Then she found her leg being caught and pulled and she'd tripped and bumped her chin and kicked at it until her shoe fell off and she was freed. And now she needed a new shoe.]

It took my shoe.

[This is very important, guys. She now only has one shoe and can't run properly.]

I don't suppose anyone has a... thing that can make them go away, do they? Maybe a really bright flashlight? Or... crap, I don't know. Anything?

Not uncoincidentally, they don't seem to want to eat men. That makes your statement moot and has me wishing the other version of these things would come along so you can then advice me while you're trapped in some stranger's bedroom about how all you need are two boots to survive.

What Veronica probably hears through her door now are sounds of an imp being fed to a shadow beast while the pirate pounds on her door.]

[Unfortunately this is when three other shadows choose to show up, their needle-teeth glinting.]

[While she might normally object to being called 'darling' by a strange, drunken man, he's also a strange drunken man who's offering to help her and she's pretty sure she heard something Englishy in his accent. We all know the English love their little pet names, dove, love, chippy.

So she unlocks and cracks the door open, seeing the first shadow monster chewing on the imp (eww) and more coming to join it. Crap.]

That's your idea of help? Get my shoe!!

He has done his shadowly duty into your shoe, I fear.

[That's enough of an invite. Jack slips into her room, slams the door behind him, and leans against it. He is still a bit out of breath.]

[She just sighed after that, head back and thudding against the door after she'd closed and locked it. Then she got a good look at him. Oh yeah, totally a pirate.]

[There is a renewed thumping on the door. The shadows must have finished picking imp out of their teeth.]

Apparently no. There was a magical word, but it escapes me at the moment; a magical word to banish them.

[he looks toward the window as the wooden planks of the portal shudder against his shoulder blades, wondering whether all of the shadows have now combined into one monstrous beast.]

Not good. But all is not lost, tiny one! We may defenestrate ourselves to good purpose.

[As much as she wanted to take offense at the tiny comment, she really couldn't. Five foot one was as good as she got and compared to the lanky beanpole of a pirate, she was definitely tiny.

And then the rest of what he said filtered through and she just gaped at him.]
