[the new face that appears over the lockets is strikingly pretty, with a sweet smile and all pale gold coloring that's probably reminiscent of some fairy tales. it's certainly pretty enough to be female, but the timbre of his voice is just such that it might call that into question for anyone actually paying attention.]

The rulers here are rather generous, aren't they? I can't claim to be alright with what basically comes down to kidnapping, but they certainly know how to soften the blow.

[there's a likable good-humor in his voice at that, and he spins the locket idly to show off his current living situation -- a king's suite.]

Are all quarters here really so nice? It's hard to believe enough wealth could exist anywhere, even in a place like this.

[he knows, of course, through a bit of magic-locket-network stalking and some eavesdropping, how the rooming situations here work. but it's an easy way to establish his station without having to give up that affable air he likes to affect, and a decent way to lure out anyone eager to explain things to a poor, confused newcomer. those are the sort of people he likes, after all, and some of the most useful.]

But then, who knows what the magic here is capable of? New worlds are sure to come with all new rules of their own, and I have to admit, I don't know exactly how this one works. [yet.] There are people who have been here for some time now, correct? I'd be extremely grateful if anyone who's had the time to learn such things could help me to better understand just what sort of place we're in.

Do not speak of things you know nothing about. I've struggled for years to ensure my country's prosperity, without ever sending even one soldier off to fight. I do not toy with the lives of my people. I could care less if you trust me, but I won't have you suggesting that I'm so careless a ruler.

[His stare went icy. He doesn't believe that any country could attempt to gain prosperity without taking action.]

I know more about it than I want to! I've seen what 'struggling' rulers do for their people.

[well. actions were certainly taken. hell, he has the scar to prove it. just...not the kind that put any of his own men at risk.]

In your world, perhaps. But if you're so small-minded that you can't imagine entirely different universes working differently, then you're already doomed to fail in this one.

[That 'small-minded' comment got him getting riled up. Kaladin then resorted to growling at first.]

This world isn't any different. [He gave a good snarl for effort too. His crystal blue eyes take on a determined edge to their look. ] And I won't fail.

Kaladin's attention looked behind the screen, as if looking at someone, then muttered something under his breath to them. His piercing gaze was soon back on the king though.]
