--hmph, thought as much. "Say a phrase and the magic will work", hm? Ridiculous. Who ever heard of speaking over distances with a locket.. Not even Legolas with all his fanciful Elven stories would have come up with something so foolish.

[More tapping and poking can be heard]

There’s nothing special about this at all. No gems, not even made of precious metals...and those creatures expect me to believe their stories? [A snort] I’d sooner believe there’s a man in Rohan afraid of horses! [He pauses, and then scoffs] Bah, listen to me, talking to myself. Legolas must be rubbing off on me more than I thought!

[Click goes the locket.]

Yes! I have magic? And I cast spells, brew potions. That sort of thing.

I have never heard of a woman capable of using proper magic. I mean no offense, but I haven't.

Maybe Legolas will show you the enchantments I put on his arrows?

I've no doubt he's eager to show me. Anything to one-up the Dwarf!

[ Oh, this is fantastic. She's never really seen a competitive side of Legolas before -- and she's more than just curious. ]

How long have you known one another?

Four, almost five years now.

So you must know him really well, then. That's good - I think he might have been a little lonely.

[ Hesitates, but -- ]

I didn't know you were in a war together too, though.

[Oh no Gimli hates it when Legolas is miserable and he knows loneliness does that do him. Dammit.

Also--too?]

Aye, we were, though it was thankfully a short one.

voice.

[brainiest]

[ It's okay Hermione has been hugging him and playing with his hair and being a very good girl!! No more loneliness for this little elf. ]

I think no matter how short a war is it feels like a long time, doesn't it? [ But! She isn't letting that make her feel at all sombre. ] At least you're here to keep an eye on him here as well.

I am. But tell me, how do you know what war is like?

[Not judging, just asking]

[brainiest]

Oh. Um, well, I fought in one. There was a dark wizard in my world what wanted to wipe out a huge amount of people and hurt a lot of others and we fought against him.

voice.

[gloinul]

[A soft noise]

You aren't very old for a daughter of Men, are you?

voice.

[brainiest]

[ blink. um. ]

I suppose not. I'm twenty-one.

voice.

[gloinul]

[Not as young as he thought, then.]

It is just that your war sounds a bit too familiar is all.

voice.

[brainiest]

A lot of wars are similar, I think. Two sides, sometimes good and evil, sometimes not that simple. It's -- it's not always avoidable. I think that's one of the worst parts. Trying to stop it and failing.

voice.

[gloinul]

Aye. But we both survived, and that is enough.

voice.

[brainiest]

We did. We're here and we have an elf to take care of.

voice.

[gloinul]

Indeed.

[He sighs]

You know, they do not tell you that Elves need so much care! Just that they are immortal and prone to vagueness!

[He's joking, clearly]

Perhaps we ought to write a book? 'Caring for your Elf: 101'.

Well, elves live a long time, right? Maybe it can be passed down through the generations.
