[the text function switches over to video, which takes a bit longer than expected, because effy has never touched something so high-tech. she learns quickly, though, and doesn't have any trouble fixing up the feed so it shows her face. her face, thin and dusted with freckles and a button of a nose, is unimpressed. in fact, there's hardly much emotion showing besides a small twitch of her brow when she speaks up. around her, it is quiet. her voice is soft with a hint of a rasp. she is smoking.]

Right then. Don't really know where I am, but I don't think I'm awake. You know, how in dreams, it feels like you've been doing something for hours and hours, but when you wake up, it's just been fifteen minutes?

[she glances down, straight hair sweeping in front of her face as she takes a drag from her cigarette. when she looks up, she exhales, smoke dissipating into the air around her.]

Feels like that.

[she gives a sly smile,]

But it isn't a dream, is it?

[with one last flicker of mischievousness in her eyes, she shuts the locket.]

[her eyes narrow momentarily as jem lies. any other day, she wouldn't really care if someone had a different opinion, but this isn't any other day, and she needs to grasp for a sense of reality.]

What, a world of magic castles and fairy wars? Isn't very normal, innit? At least home's home.

Dunno. Maybe they'd rather a war and magic than their own home.

[she brings her cigarette to her lips,]

If it wasn't for the war, I bet people would quite like it.

Can't imagine how awful their home's got to be for that.

[her eyes follow the action, and she half-wishes she had one too. not a habit she ever got into; more kieren sometimes when she was young, especially around rick. she's heard enough about what a horrible habit it is from her mum and dad, but she's always fancied it artistic.]

[does she like it. she takes a moment to look around, glancing past the locket, then out a nearby window that's also off-screen. when her eyes finally fall back to the locket, she gives a small shake of her head.]

[makes her smile, somehow.]

Hope so. [she doesn't know how likely it is if there really is a war on.] Seems like they've got plenty of people here already.

[she pauses, brows furrowing for nearly a second.]

That's how they think.

[jem pauses, herself. remembers when those people had come from the city to support the pds domiciled care initiative — fucking stupid name, even now that she supports it. more than a hundred thousand risen, they'd said, had their hands so full in the cities that they left everyone else to fend for themselves. that's how the human volunteer force had been born, had got so desperate as to take on fourteen year olds.]

[at least the hvf was always a volunteer force.]

[she wants to go home, hopes that when and if she does, she'll forget this place. there's too much here that she doesn't need to pile on to her shoulders. she's got enough to deal with as it is.]

[she breathes out, makes it sound wry.]
