Then I guess they'd be angry, but that's their problem and not mine. Don't care so much about what people think about you, Hiro, just be a good person and then the only one you ever need to really answer to is yourself. Loving yourself is all that really matters, otherwise ... how are we supposed to go on living?

[ Tilting her head curiously, she nods after pretending to think about it. She really doesn't expect a kid to build anything impressive, so whatever he feels like making is a pleasant surprise. ]

[Well now he has to build something impressive. He rubs the back of his neck, a sheepish grin following.]

A raincheck. [He has ideas of what he wants...but he needs to look into some things first. Research, too.] When I settle on one thing, I'd like to ask for it without questioning.

Nope, can't do it. You gotta tell me, I'm nosy. [ #MOM MODE ] But if you can promise me it doesn't involve hurting anyone else or yourself, I'll keep it a secret.

That's a pretty big promise, don't you think? [Maybe trying to flip this back around will help. That, and of course, just because the conversation's locked doesn't mean he trusts the lockets or anything.] You're the Goddess of Love, you should know that that's not always a promise you can keep.

I keep promises when they're close to peoples hearts, little detective. And you could kill plenty of people without using your bare hands, so don't pull that one on me. I raised Cupid, I know that look.

[Mmmmh. He narrows his eyes slightly, fingers of his free hand drumming on the top of his desk for a moment.]

[He actually looks mildly affronted at being called "twitchy" (even though he knows he's acting like it now.) But he doesn't comment on that so he can focus on the question.]

Which do you think is more important? Protecting somebody you love from something dangerous, or protecting yourself from something equally as dangerous?

[ That's not what she was expecting, but she gives it the same level of solemn consideration that clashes with her usual bouncy, apathetic hype. ]

I think the real question is, could you live with yourself if something happened to them, and if not, why wouldn't you save the person you obviously love?

[There's a very long pause to follow that as he thinks it through. Those are good questions, but there are still problems with the answers to those questions.]

...right. That makes a lot of sense.

[He's going to treat it as a rhetorical question even though it might not be, and he knows the answer to both of those. He couldn't live with himself if something happened, but he also couldn't deal if protecting one person meant harming somebody else he cares about. It's complicated, but that's giving him something to ponder over and sort out on his own at least. They had a deal. She answered just like he asked, and now he has to uphold his end of the bargain.]

Hiro, don't do anything stupid, okay? [ Sometimes, very occasionally, Aphrodite can actually be an adult. Usually, it's around people she's worried about and Hiro definitely qualifies after that question. ] You can always come stay in one of my temples if you need to, I'll make sure you're safe. You and whoever else you need to protect.

I've heard that a lot recently. [May as well be honest about it. And it's a nice offer, it really is, and he can at least give a slight grin in response.] I appreciate the offer, but I don't think I can do that. Thank you though. Really.

[Another lingering pause.] I'll make sure to find something good for the interior of whatever I build. Promise. [That is to say he will most certainly remember what she's said and maybe even find some cute shoes as an offer.]
