[Dorian Gray has been doing a great deal of growing up. When he addresses the locket, his expression is set firmly, and his famous youth is only in his features. This is war. And he does not wish for death. So he is short, to the point, avoiding all of the excesses of his normal speech patterns.]

I've produced protective stones as a product of my research in warding magic. [He holds up one: a simple stone, with runes carved in, small, lightweight, very portable.] I have made as many as I could as quickly as possible. It will guard the bearer from the first strikes set against them by taking the damage in their stead, but it can only bear so much—up to a broken bone, perhaps, or a deep but non-fatal cut. Still, it is one more chance of survival.

If any wish for one, you may come to me in the library of Caer Glaem, or I can deliver it to you anywhere in Seelie territory.

I see. [Sort of.] I take it I must keep it with me for it to function? What happens if I hold it in my pocket and someone thrusts a sword at my gut?

[He has to wince at the image. It is not one he delights in.] You must have it on your person, yes. It wouldn't take a stab wound; I don't think it could. The sword may not go through you at first, but soon enough the stone would shatter from taking on such force and you would bear the consequences of everything that might happen after that point.

I don't plan to be in a situation where I'd have to worry about such a thing, but that is good to know.

[She traces her thumb over the carved runes, pursing her lips thoughtfully.]

Were you educated in magic before coming to this land?

I only began my education a month ago, here at the Lord Marshall's behest. [When he smiles, he seems to be dwelling on the pleasantness of the thought, the idea of what he says next.] It is something new. I like it.

Something as amazing as this, in just one month? Either you're something of a prodigy or this magic business is simpler than I expected.

[Electing not to mention any prior connection to the supernatural he has going on because nooope.]

[Her fingers tuck around the stone and she places it in her pocket.]

[His smile tugs again at the corner of his mouth. This woman—strong and confident as she seems to him—may startle him a little, but he does wish well for her. And he is glad to see his work used.]
