[Dorian Gray has been doing a great deal of growing up. When he addresses the locket, his expression is set firmly, and his famous youth is only in his features. This is war. And he does not wish for death. So he is short, to the point, avoiding all of the excesses of his normal speech patterns.]

I've produced protective stones as a product of my research in warding magic. [He holds up one: a simple stone, with runes carved in, small, lightweight, very portable.] I have made as many as I could as quickly as possible. It will guard the bearer from the first strikes set against them by taking the damage in their stead, but it can only bear so much—up to a broken bone, perhaps, or a deep but non-fatal cut. Still, it is one more chance of survival.

If any wish for one, you may come to me in the library of Caer Glaem, or I can deliver it to you anywhere in Seelie territory.

Why have you made these? [ It's an innocent question from a seemingly innocent maiden. ]

Delaying the inevitable is a waste of your talent.

[Remus appears with a tired smile, and a couple of curious questions for him.]

It's a kind offer, sir. I would take at least one, for a friend, perhaps two, for one more as well, if I may.

There is a question I must ask you though, in private conversation if I could. [He's not quite sure that even this would count as that, given what he's heard about the lockets.] Would you prefer meeting in person? In...the Caer Glaem Library, did you say?

[Wow, that sure is a change in attitude. Is this effect that war has on people? Dave doesn't like it one bit.]

Sweet. Dorian, that's amazing. You've really gone all the way with that research, huh.

[You are such a strange girl.

He looks a little aghast; in a moment, it turns into the pinched brows of a frown. (Although he may be a little pleased by her reference to his talent. Yay, she thinks he's talented!)]

I have friends who are going to fight. If there is anything I can do to protect them, I shall.

Of course, they're yours.

[He can't help but feel a little cautious, but if it's privacy, so be it. They are on the same side.] Yes, there is a room set aside for the purposes of magecraft there. I can meet with you there.

[ooc; no problem!]

[A little more of the Dorian whom Dave knows appears in the ducking of a head, a familiar and shy movement. He does love a compliment!]

It was the method that came most naturally to me, I suppose. How are you, Dave? You're still away?

[The reason will be clear soon enough. He just does not want to have to ask his questions in front of others, lest he be perceived the wrong way.]

Ah, yes! The Magi Workroom, isn't it! Sir Lancelot gave me a key, but I haven't made it over to Caer Glaem to investigate the place yet. I can meet with you there though, of course. Are you free now, then? As I said, it shouldn't take too much time, then I'll be out of your hair. Though I'm curious to know about your research as well, and the construction of these stones, if you'll indulge me on that as well? Consider it an occupational hazard, but I'm always interested in learning more, particularly about magic.

[Dorian offers a quick smile, unable to resist responding to Remus's enthusiasm for the research.] Yes, I am there now. I would be happy to discuss what I've done, and I have my research with me at present.

Now that's some proper magic.

No need to deliver, I'll meet you in the library.

[Yeah, she's impressed. But that's about as much as she's going to give you for now.]

[OH OKAY Clara always manages to bulldoze over him.] I'll, uh, see you shortly?

[It's what she does!]

Brilliant.

How long did it take you to create them? What sot of magic is it?

[So many questions.]

Ah, it only takes about five minutes to make each, but it takes energy from me. It uses sympathetic magic.

So it uses your life force to protect someone else if there life is in danger? Something like that?

[Cool. Very cool.]

Thank you for accommodating me. It shouldn't take me more than a minute or so to pop by.

[True to his word, there's a literal 'POP' sound outside the door and a soft knock to follow.]

Oh, no! [beat] That isn't a bad idea. I may try that in the future. But this spell takes force acted against a person and transferred it to force acted against the rock. It moves the energy of violence away—like a sacrificial lamb.

It isn't, is it.

[She likes it when she has good ideas. But she's nodding along, thinking.]

Though that sounds clever as well. How difficult is it to learn? I know you said the process itself is rather quick but draining on the creator. If we had enough people able to make them, we might be able to hand them out to people around the castle. Give them something to protect their families with.

[Dorian signals for Ruadán to get the door, but he rises to his feet to greet Remus. As is his custom, he has tea ready, with a cup for Remus if he likes, and plates of snacks—muffins and butter, biscuits, jam, cucumber sandwiches—for guests. Ruadán ushers Remus inside, and Dorian offers him a smile and his hand.]

You were not understating your speed. It is a pleasure to meet you. I'm Dorian Gray.

[Aww, don't be shy, Dorian. It's just Dave, who is happy to see his friend being a bit more of himself now.]

And that's great1 If you find a method that works for you, stick to it, man. It's... satisfying, isn't it? [The first time he did magic will never leave this mind (though ti probably also has to do with the dragon trying to kill him).] Yeah, I'm still in the Cothromach. I wanna help them as much as I can, they're still rebuilding from a previous fight. You... are still staying in the castle, aren't you.

I needed to grasp the principles of sympathetic magic first, and it . . . it is like art. Part of it is practice, and part of it is that moment when the notes all fall into place and it is felt. At the least, that is how the magic I am developing functions.

I would be happy to share my notes so that more people can make these. I also have notes on different kinds of magic people might learn, and the way they could turn to protective magic in their own manner.

I am. [He has wide eyes as he looks to Dave, and so he pushes past the point of anxiety, over Dave's disapproval of where he is and the reasons he can't give for it, and onto something he can address.] I can fly out to the Cothromach to bring this to you. I have a second stone I'd like you to have.

I-- what? [He's surprised at the offer and it shows.] Are you sure? Wouldn't the stones be more useful for the people actually fighting?

You offer quite a gift. [ He raises a brow. ] And you seek nothing in return?

And they shall have them, but I want you to have one as well. Please, Dave. I would rest easier if I knew I had given you this much.

[He's doing that earnest imploring thing he does, like the whole weight of his peace of mind rests on Dave accepting this.]

I seek a better hope of survival for our soldiers, and so a better hope for myself. Surely there can be no greater return on my work than that.

[said like a true rich bitch who has never had to work a day in his life, honestly]

[Ah... this person... their face and their voice are familiar. Gilgamesh has no need for trinkets and baubles, but that Dorian possesses some degree of magical ability surprises him, especially considering what he sensed from him.

Or rather, what he didn't.

He's set to march any day now, any moment now, but this may be a worthwhile pit stop. If only to see the look of a Dorian Gray so very different from before, so very stern and so very grown up all of a sudden.]
