[ Some crunching can be heard. It's late, there's not going to be much of an explanation here, other than Alice's hands look very bad, in bruises and cuts. She continues on like it's nothing. She looks up to the imp and frowns. ]

Or a dustpan. I know this is a pain without a lantern, I'm sorry. Use a handkerchief so you don't cut yourself, alright?

[ Sometimes she feels bad for this imp. Alice goes up to cleaning broken shards of glass, ever so carefully, using a basket as means to pick up pieces. With a huff, more to herself- ]

This is the last time I ever-

[ She stops, of course, to notice the locket is open and shoots a look up to the imp. ]

Don't even think about it. I'm not in the mood for this, it was an accident.

[ With a mutter, Alice's hand goes over it and the locket is promptly clamped shut. Should anyone ask, she'll shift it to voice after getting the rest of the mirror cleaned up. ]

That there are things out there far worse than I, I do not doubt. [ We strove against them, after all agrees Caranthir ] But that does not make me any less terrible.

Sometimes the lesser of evils is better than most, Mr. Maglor. I'd rather put up with someone who is open about their misgivings than someone trying to hide them.

But that does not make me any less terrible, Alice.

Be happy with small blessings, Mr. Maglor. You have friends and family who care for you.

[ She looks visibly upset by that response. ]

You're better than most, Mr Maglor, but I think you would do well staying with your family so that they do not have to worry about you.

[ A quiet smile ]

Never you fear, Alice. Maedhros has been content to keep me by his side, and amil is busy now with her comission. I see her seldom, but she is as well as she might be.

Amil?

[ A relative? About the only one she can think of that close would be Nerdanel. ]

Your mother?

Hm? Ah... yes, my mother. You have met the Lady Nerdanel then?

I have spoken to her before, yes, when she had asked for you and your brother.

Ah... [ he nods ] I had forgotten that she... yes. I thought then that she was but a dream. But Amil is the Quenya word for mother.

A dream, Mr. Maglor?[ Is that just a fancy way of saying "hallucination"? ]

Mm. I remember all of them, and sometimes, I hear them still. I thought her but one of them, at the time.

[ He's old, very old. This isn't giving her much hope that her hallucinations will go away, or at least, calm down. ]

You need an animal or perhaps, something more in tune for you. They will tell you if it's a dream or not.

[ To be fair, Maglor induces most of them himself ]

Tis fine, gwilwileth. Usually tis not hard to tell dream from reality. Tis only that hers... is the voice I was truly not expecting to ever hear again, and... I was... not well, at the time.

Given the circumstances, Mr. Maglor, I understand why you wouldn't be. I was devastated by the loss of my sister, too.

You would think that it would be easier, the second time around. [ He says almost absently ] And yet...

And yet?

[ He shrugs, so very old and tired ]

And yet I would swear it hurt worse, to see him as he was, and to watch him fall again into madness. To hold his body in my arms and know he died for my sake, and that he tried, because I was so angry with him over Legolas, to end the fight quickly and limit casualties. To have him back... and to have him vanish without ever a word.

[ Softly ] If not for my family I would have ended it myself, Alice. I could not bear such a hurt again.

We tried to stop him -- I tried to reason with him. He said that he didn't deserve such a kind brother.

[ Celegorm was still the lesser of evils; he would never compare to who she had seen and dealt with in her life. ]

You'll be fine, Mr. Maglor, you just need to stay close to them.

I know. And he always underestimated himself. He was my kind firefly, long before he became the monster that history remembers him as. Did you know, he used to bring home the sick and injured animals he found to tend to until they were well. Amil and Atto would get so angry. Eventually they stopped scolding him and Atto built him a place outside to house them all. I wish... I wish I knew what went wrong.

He said that he loved animals more than people, if memory serves right. I understand the sentiment, sometimes I feel the same way.

He sounded troublesome, but his intentions were good. But I cannot tell you how someone becomes filled with so much anger. Only that I dare to venture something upset him and he never healed, perhaps. It is important to remember that was not your doing. He loved you.

He always did understand them better. [ Maglor says wistfully ]

I know. We were brothers. [ He says as if it explains everything, because it does, for Maglor ]
