As some of you are aware, there was a fire in Caer Glaem's library. An intruder was in the buidling.

As it stands, we as shardholders are the strongest thing our court has to defend itself. If the shardholders of the other court come to us the footsoldiers will be cut down all too easily -- a shardholder is worth 30 or so of the other soldiers.

If we are to defend Caer Glaem therefore we must help in not just leaving her to pursue alliances and fight enemies, but by the stationing of guards. We must keep track of who enters and leaves our city, be vigilant against agents of Morla scouting us out or attacks against us. As you may already be aware myself and Sir Grimm are holding training all through this month for anyone who wishes to learn, but this will require people good at keeping records too.

It is surely better than doing nothing?

It is. I mean only to say that other ways of intruding upon Caer Glaem may need to be addressed.

I am no sorcerer, my lady, I am only a knight. If someone wishes to protect this city by magic I would support it, but it is not something I can comprehend or understand fully. I can do what is within my realm of ability, and that is to organise soldiers. If you have suggestions I am, of course, willing to listen.

It is also beyond my ability or understanding. My words were not meant to cast aspersion upon your attempts to guard this place; I hope you understand that.

I understand, forgive me if I sounded otherwise, it is only that we are this city's main source of protection. I am happy to do otherwise than simply post guards, but that requires people to work with me. Forgive me if I sound frustrated, but it feels more difficult than it should be to achieve that.

Of course, I do not begrudge you that. Let me know if you require help extra manpower -- I can marshal the forces here to come to your aid.

No, no. Of course. I understand. You have done well and I would happily and earnestly help however I can. I am no guard myself but I do have some experience in... [She pauses.] ...administering such duties.

Many have spoken of an offensive, but I am reluctant to launch such a thing while we are still vulnerable. Even one shardholder can be destructive if they get within our walls and our best are out elsewhere. I have a fear that this may require more political tact than I possess, to persuade people to work as a unit. I have a friend better at such things than I am, I hope to ask his advice. Leadership is not something I am.... used to, this learning curve is rather steep.

Administering?

There are two parts of every battle. Offense is very important, but what good is fighting and defeating the enemy away from home, if you lose the home you are fighting so hard for? No, defense is just as important as offense. Perhaps, even more so.

[When it comes down to it, fighting is so much more than just striking blade against blade. Too many people forget that.]

I hope that your friend can help. I have led men, but I am still new and I don't know how much help my advice would be here. I am still learning about the people and the battle we fight. Uninformed decisions are just as dangerous as not remembering how complex battle can be.

I see -- then you were involved in handling armies of your land directly, or in giving instruction to another who wrote the patrols and organised the men? Forgive me if the question appears impertinent, I am only trying to gauge the detail of your experience. To organise men can be done at many levels, and many minds can be involved in the discussion of it -- each handling different aspects.

[ He does not particularly seem either cowed or impressed by the declaration, merely takes it as fact. Lancelot, after all, has dealt with Arthur plenty enough. It is not arrogant, but loyalty is not necessarily equated to specific experience in handling patrols and the like. ]

I've worked with dog handlers in combat situations, though I was never one myself. They can be trained to detect explosives [ does he have to explain those to you Lancelot ] so they're pretty damn useful.

Was there much lost in the fire?

Luckily not -- a few shelves, perhaps, nothing more. It was intercepted quickly.

What you say is true -- but on the same note, different perspectives can be valuable. You may not know all there is to know about this world but that also means your decisions have not been coloured by it yet. The benefit of having more than one person making a decision is that it can be discussed, and information shared. Your advice will never not be welcome.

An enemy of Caer Glaem is an enemy to all of us. It is as much pragmatism as kindness. If you find such a threat it is better for all of us if it is wiped out.

You have my condolences, then. That must have been a difficult thing to suffer through. I hope we never have need of your experience in that specific field here.

I am actually very glad you think that. Not because I think my advice is that great, but because we are in such a unique situation. There are so many people with different experiences here that the information we can gather is unimaginable. All we need to do is have an open mind and be willing to work together.

As do I, though it may be best to have done some planning, should the unthinkable happen.

Precisely. It would be one thing if it was something that happened on neutral ground, but to have it happen in what's effectively our base of operations... that doesn't bode well whatsoever. Has something like this happened in the past, or is this the first instance?

Of course, I'd imagine record keeping wouldn't keep out every threat, as I'm sure there are clever sorts who would find out ways to bypass it. But it certainly can't hurt, either.

I could manage that, though there should be people put in charge of overseeing the records all the same.
