01 | OPEN TO BOTH COURTS

[ Han is still staring at the ‘screen’ of the locket like this is the most ridiculous piece of tech he has seen in his entire life. Still, his voice is confident, and beyond the general expression of disgusted disbelief, there are hints of worry in the way his lips thin. ]

So, apparently, there are no space-ready or functional craft, and even if there were, there is no telling where in the Galaxy we even are. [ Assuming, of course, they would be in the galaxy that Han knows. Which he is beginning to suspect is not the case. ]

So here’s a better question… What’s the best craft available for transport, and what… business is there, to be doing.

[ Chewie’s not here, the kid’s not here, Leia’s not here, his blaster doesn’t work. Hell, he’d even take old Kenobi or even Greedo over most of this crowd. Better the devil he knows.

And, all right, he kinda breaks at this and has to ask. ]

Also, honestly, how do so many of you folks not know that light has a speed, and space travel is not difficult. Really.

Kinda sucks that they really aren't the sort you can refuse, either.

[ Saber is... interesting, to Han's mind. It's clear she's rather stiff and professional, but there's a shared knowledge of the sorts of things Han thinks of as 'smuggler gifts', the kind of knowledge you only get when you skate along the edge of the law, and deal with people that sane folks don't do unless they are just that desperate.

She likely couldn't have gotten it there, given how stiff she is, but it is definitely something he'll be keeping an eye on. ]

[Her knowledge comes from another source altogether as she had been the law at one point in her existence and never failed to not deliver proper justice. It gave her an uncanny insight into the minds of criminals. And, well, then there is that whole magi war she was brought into with the one master that didn't follow conventional rules.]

Or you possess the hubris to believe you are the one in control.

[ Han thinks on that for a moment, and his face moves a little closer to shock and then something between derision and pity. ]

Poor suckers. I'm amazed those sorts of people even last long enough to make those sorts of mistakes.

[ A bloated smuggler was a dead one, and even the very best knew there were forces to work around and avoid whenever possible. ]

Some have an uncanny knack of escaping unfavorable situations.

[ Han is one of those people with uncanny knacks for escaping unfavorable situations, and he's not all that ashamed to admit it. But even with that, he's still smart about how and with whom he does his business. ]

I guess the real wonder of the universe is how long some idiots just keep living.

The universe, it would seem, has a unique sense of humor.

[ Han would contradict that, but then again, look at his life, look at his choices. Look at where he is now. Hell, maybe Old Kenobi was onto something with that Force business. ]

Y'know? Maybe it does.

[ That sounds more contemplative than it probably should. ]

Not on your life, si- Saber. [ He's trying. Old habits die slow, hard, and painful. ]

I've seen a little too much to be blindly faithful, but recently there have been a few things... well, let's just say I'm a little more open to thought than I used to be.

[ Luke is kinda... well, he's kind of just incredible. Compelling evidence. ]

That is good to hear. The Age of Gods may have passed where I am from, but divinity can still be found in some form or another.

[ Now you are edging into Old Kenobi territory. ]

You sound like someone I used to know. You'd both probably get along like a fuselage on fire.

I doubt that. There are few I get along with well.

...unless they are superb chefs.

[ Han leans back, reclining. ]

Honorable, "civilized". A good leader and a man of not-inconsiderable faith, given what most people think his sort of religion nowadays. [ Also the hell that was the Clone Wars and the Galactic Empire. ]

A swordsman, too. [ He has to strain his mind a bit, trying to remember facts from over twenty years ago but... ] Had a reputation as the Negotiator, if I remember right.

[Saber barely prevents herself from rolling her eyes and closed them instead with an unreadable sigh.]

And I am certain he deserved his end. Any of us that foolishly followed and truly believed in those ideals do. I did.

Well, last I heard, he's doing pretty well as a ghost. Sort of aided in the destruction of a superweapon the likes of I'd never seen before.

[ It's said with a bit of wry amusement in his voice. Han isn't entirely sure he believes Luke when he says that Obi-Wan still speaks to him, but given that the old man discorporated into thin air when he died, Han is... willing to stretch his "faith" a little. ]

Even before he got old, though, he was a brilliant tactical general, at least according to all the newsfeeds. He seemed a little war-weary when I met him, but I admit I admired his strength of purpose. And he had way more street cred than the kid that ended up tagging along with him.

[ Luke has grown so much, Han realizes, and he's kind of grateful he got to see it. ]

I am certain that is all true.

[It was for her. How much this man seems like her. She's still unsure if she would get along with him -now-. Before when she was the silver knight, the King of the Britons, she certainly would have, but she looked at things differently now.]

[ There is a smirk tugging at the corner of his lips, but Han is doing his best to suppress it. ]

Don't tell me you've finally joined the old, reliable cynic camp with me, at long last. I might start to think I'm right about it all. [ Something about Saber still seems a little knightly to him. Just something about her seriousness, or graveness of manner. But, he doesn't really have the experience to tell what that would mean, really. He comes from a trade of fakers and swindlers at best. ]

I have not. Having lived a similar life to that man, I have no reason to disbelieve what you say he supposedly has done. Children's tales of heroes have to be inspired by something.

[ Children's tales of heroes. An interesting thought to consider. ]

But the hero always dies at the end, is what you're implying. [ He shrugs. ] You're not wrong. Heroes don't last long in the world. [ He scratches the back of his head, inwardly amused at himself. ] Which I suppose makes us cynical fools the biggest ones following after them, anyways.

[ Who's the more foolish, the fool or the fool who follows him? Old man got that right. ]

That is exactly correct. [Death comes to everyone.]

A hero fights for something he believes in with everything he has.

That's not always a bad thing, so long as it isn't blinding.

[ Han used to be more in the 'you're an idiot' camp, but... well, his mind is slowly starting to change. Funny what personal investment makes you realize. ]

But that isn't just heroes, either. Regardless of who you are, putting everything you got towards one place is a bad road to be on.

And yet so many do so.

It is easier to devote yourself to just one thing.

And most people are lazy, myself included. I'm also just a little smarter than that, is all.

I would be disappointed if you were not one to leave yourself options.
