[ This isn't the first time she's discovered a powerful necklace capable of miracles beyond being a plot device, but as an experienced magus who is used to artifacts passing along messages over cell phones, it's no trouble to adjust to it. While she doesn't understand why it works the way it does (what's the purpose of keeping a conversation permanently), from what she gathers it is a primary tool used by many of the others here. Having met someone already from her world, there remains the possibility there may be others so she sits all prim and proper for her debut. ]

Good evening. I'm sure the lot of you are tired of hearing introductions, but it'd be poor manners to not announce myself. While it would be discreet to do this one by one, idle time is limited so I'll make this brief and as memorable as I can.

I'm Rin Tohsaka. [ Surname second only because she assumes Japanese mannerisms are frowned upon in this world. ] Though I've been called away from my studies in London to fight in a war, I must admit my experience in combat is limited. From what I've gathered, there are many like me here. What is there for us to do? How can we aid beyond training and letting our inexperienced manner add to the favor of the opposing side? Showing both intelligence and courage can only get you so far. It seems rather meaningless to have us younger adults throw ourselves into the fray.

So what is it that you do to be of use? Every person brought here must have some value to them and hearing of your experiences may be able to help guide me towards my own. Keep it brief and with as little bias as you can--I frankly don't care to hear about the war this or the war that. Thank you.

Really?

From what I've gathered in my conversations with others, the faeries are anything but that. They have rehearsed avoiding most subjects quite well.

Unless you know a secret magical word or something that gets them to speak?

Well, maybe it's not all the fairies. Might be the higher-ups? [The whole thing's still a little fuzzy to him but he's going off of what he really remembers.] All I know is that fairies came up to me, asked me what I wanted, I told them, I woke up one morning and suddenly I could do things I can't do at home.

I'm sort of wondering if maybe "please" really is a magic word.

[ Slightly takes offense to that, but he's in luck. Right now she's trying her best to appear pleasing and nice, so blurting out at someone will take a bit more work on their end. ]

Really? I'll guess asking them sweetly will fetch me more flies. [ That's not even how the phrase goes, but she's not sweating it. ]

Could you clarify a bit on what you've said though? It seems strange--that you could do things you couldn't do at home?

[The look on his face definitely says that he has zero idea what she's even talking about, but hey, whatever, that's not the focus here. The focus here is that she's asking questions that he can actually answer though (and show off a bit in the process.)]

Magic, you know? I'm not exactly a wizard or anything where I'm from but I asked them for a little bit of an advantage and they gave it to me. [He pauses for a minute to think about what others have said.] It's not limited to magic either. You can ask for pretty much anything except for people or a way home or stuff like that. [Other...than...he kind of got both thanks to a well-timed canon update and the arrival of his best friend, but that's also not the focus here. He's assuming he's an exception, that's not unusual.]

I'm pretty sure I can be a lot more helpful now.

Hold on, what you've said makes no sense. [ At least to her because she's a practitioner of the stuff even though she's trying to act otherwise. ]

Are you saying they just bestowed the power of using magic on you because you asked? Do you even have the experience to use magic without having it blow up in your face?

[At least he's not too offended by that. He's pretty used to people not getting what he's saying even though he's explaining it, in his opinion, perfectly clear.]

Yeah, that's basically what I'm saying. I mean, not all magic. They made it pretty specific but it's more than I've ever had before. [So no. He has zero experience but it's hard to be intimidated by water powers now that he's over the initial shock.]

Pretty specific? What do you mean?

[ Tilting her head curiously. ] Something like you can only conjure fire or a single element? It doesn't work that way in stories, but sometimes in games.

Water, actually, but you were close. [He lifts an eyebrow though.] What, you mean like a video game? I kind of thought if I was going to get video-game-like powers they'd give me more than one.

I wonder why water. [ Is that the go-to element? Not a bad one to have seeing as water is endless and cycled throughout worlds. ]

Is that how it works in video games? I was always under the impression that in order to gain more, you had to be experienced or be blessed.

Because I asked them. [It's said in a tone that clearly says "duh" but he's polite enough not to outright say so.] I probably could have asked for something else but water made the most sense. [Especially when one spends a lot of his time hanging out with fire-users...]

Oh, I don't really know. I'm not too familiar with video games but the ones I've seen you usually start out with at least two if not more and then you start picking up more.

[ Well she had to ask to be sure, geez. At least that confirms it for her. Out of all the elements, he chose water willingly, which meant he had a purpose for doing so. ]

Two! Are you hoping to gain more than one while you're here--ah, I didn't catch your name?

Why not? [There's an easygoing grin now that he seems to read it more as she's genuinely interested in what he has to say.] If they're going to keep me here to fight in their war, they can at least equip me with things to help. It sounds like a fair trade to me.

And it's Ryan.

Ryan. [ Calmly saying his name as if it'll prepare him for what's next. ]

Now that you have been given this power, do you think you can use it to kill another person? From what I understand, the removal of a shard is only done via murder. Politicians have no need for magic learning, only those who are willing to fight.

So I must ask if you're capable of doing that.

[It's a bit of a startling question, yes, but...honestly? He's given it some thought. A little bit. He knows the immediate answer but he's still stalling a bit.]

Probably not with this power. Water's not really damaging enough to kill somebody.

[A diplomatic answer to skirt around the question.]

And what about you?

... are you aware that ten people die to accidental drowning every day?

[ The fact she's a big enough of a nerd to KNOW this off hand is embarrassing. ]

I think I'm more concerned with the fact you aren't aware people can die from water.

[He actually rolls his eyes. No, he wasn't aware but thank you for the enlightenment Rin that's precisely what he needed.

(Though that's sort of good to know...) Nevertheless he sort of just huffs in response.]

No that's not--I mean I know people can drown, obviously. But unless I'm shoving my hands down their throat I can't make them drown you know? I'm still trying to make them bigger. Sort of the downside of brand new powers. You don't get all of the accessories to trick them out and make things better.

So what you need is a mentor to show you how it's done and to give you a few extra hints to push you along your way. Once you've caught up, then you can start to create your own techniques.

[ She sounds little too experienced in this matter. ] Have you tried looking for one?

I kinda have one, but she's pretty busy. [Korra's always doing things around Drabwurld and with Mako and Bolin and what-have-you. He's not surprised at all.] I can probably figure it out myself though. Do you really think people need a mentor for everything?

Yes! [ Magic is just one thing you don't just learn on your own. The last guy she knew who did that destroyed his body. ~~He became swords. DOES RYAN WANT TO BECOME SWORDS??~~ ]

I'm getting a headache just thinking about the implications of not being mentored properly.

[The emphasis on the word yes causes him to jump a little bit because wow okay Rin you sure are serious about this whole thing. ~~IT'D BE MORE INTERESTING AT LEAST but maybe he'll pass for now...~~ He just sort of squints into the camera then.]

Then I guess that answers your original question about what I'm going to do to be useful here. I'll see if I can find some magic fish or something.

Magic fish... [ At least he has something a plan now, even if it's one Rin wouldn't place any faith in. In a world full of faeries, imps, and who knows what else, there remains a possibility that there are magical fish that can talk in the waters. ]

Depends. Do you actually want me to keep you informed? ["Do you actually care, or are you going to use this information against me somehow?"]

[ Both. ] Do you think I would ask otherwise? There's really no reason to waste both of our time to pretend if I was disinterested.

[Good thing he's had practice dealing with that.] Hey you never know. For all I know you could just be asking to be polite and tactful. [But the look on his face says he doesn't believe that at all.]

I'll let you know if I figure something out soon.
