[ At first the feed is silent, just showing a small grassy plain. Then, suddenly, there's a quiet little yip and something pops into view -- a puppy, looking more than a little excited, with wings fluttering around it's little body as it moves, barking at the camera (or, rather, who is behind the camera). Eventually it moves, with a scuffling noise, and Hermione's face pops into view, at least until she is mauled by the dog licking at her and clambering to get into her lap. She accepts it with good grace, of course, just laughing and patting at the lovely thing's head. ]
I was given this lovely boy by the faeries today and I have no idea who it's from - it must be a gift because I didn't ask for him, at least not this time. I wanted to say thank you to whoever it was because he's adorable! He's the cutest thing I've ever seen - and I've decided to call him Padfoot.
[ She knows Harry and Ron will understand and she hopes neither of them will be put off by the nickname. She moves to shut off the feed even as the puppy goes to try and bite at the chain holding the locket in her fingertips. ]
Padfoot, no ---
[ and it goes. ]

I was given my boon by the faeries and - it's incredible. They've given me a book that'll teach me how to make my own network, like the lockets but only for us to use. I was wondering if you'd all tell me what kind of thing you'd want, if you want a personal network for anyone or just for you and some friends? And what you'd like it on - a watch or a necklace or something? Let me know, please?

It's a long story, okay? A personal name. [ She leans forward, switching the feed to private. ] I'm sorry it's been so long, Luke. I was, um. Taken?
video » private
[ the switch of the feed isn't lost on him. ]
Taken? [ since he had no idea — his eyebrows raise to only pinch as he recalls actually being told, but not in what he'd call the english language. he closes his eyes for a moment, as if exasperated, but it's mostly with himself. what kind of hero doesn't actually be a hero and go help a friend while they're in danger? ] You're her. [ he'd quotation mark, but he doesn't particularly feel like it. ] The bossy girl the guy with the attitude problem was looking for.
[ he shakes his head. ] Shit, I should've known. [ somehow. even when it's impossible. but he doesn't particularly associate hermione with being bossy. smart, english, a witch, even pretty — but not bossy. ]

Finally, she looks back at the feed. She blinks, a little lost and focused for a moment before it dawns on her. Obviously someone had asked about her -- Ron, she assumes -- and she goes pink, hands shaking for a moment before she nods. ] I think so. I hope that isn't really what he said, though - I don't have an attitude problem and I'm certainly not bossy.
[ She sniffs, looking a little petulant about that particular description. ]
I'm fine, now, though. Really.

[ it's easier to address that than it is ... this. luke's been on the end of this before, consoling the kids who went on quests, or even crossed the borders of the camp with monsters nipping at their feet. he's been on the receiving end of it; though, he hadn't been taken so much as he had failed his quest and seen to it his own pride had been stripped from him. it's not really in his place, but luke asks all the same, anyway: ] You sure? [ she has all reason to front with him, but he finds talking about her friend isn't exactly a highlight for him. ]
[ he tries to play it off, anyway. everyone always feels a little better when faced with humour, especially when it's something serious wrapped in a package of a bit of a smile. ] If I'd known, I would've said goodbye to chasing Muggle tail and tried to find you. Kind of good at the whole navigating thing. Not too bad at the fighting thing, either.

[ She shakes her head, looking a little put out -- moreso now. Honestly, if Ron was going to ask people about her couldn't have used other words? Other descriptions? There's more to her than just being bossy and opinionated, thank you very much, and she's a little frustrated by it. Huffing, she settles back and absently pets at the dog. At least someone loves her, right Padfoot? ]
I'm sure. I had a few scrapes and bruises and it was a relief to use my magic again, but I'm fine.
[ It's not rehersed, really, but she has been saying it a little more than usual. She fumbles for a moment before she looks back at Luke. ]
Thank you -- I mean it. I appreciate knowing you'd have come to help. Maybe, um... Maybe I could make you a locket? One for us to use if the other is in trouble. I want to help you as well, you know.

[ but use her magic again? that doesn't sound very comforting. but it means she has it back now, and that's more than what many people can say when they've found themselves free of their kidnapper's clutches. luke had left camp with his pride and success itching at his fingertips to only return with even more bitterness sitting on his back. at least she's still the same, sharp tone and smile just as he had remembered it. but he does feel the urge to ask her to demonstrate something, just to ensure she's not giving him a rehearsed line. ]
[ he forces a bit of a smile, ] I don't need any help. [ it's an automatic response; he can do just fine. he's been looking after himself well before he'd hit the age of nine. but it's always difficult to accept it from anyone else. the last time he did, the entire world almost crumbled. ] You don't need to trouble yourself. A Batsignal would do just fine. Even maybe a phonecall where you give me very detailed and specific information. A photo, too. Google Maps and I are old pals.

sighs.
Hermione refocuses on Luke quickly enough though. Considering their entire relationship has been a result of text messages and video chats it's rather touching that he seems so concerned about her - and she does flush a little at that, because cute boys being worrisome is rather endearing. Still, there are more important things to worry about and she has to force herself to lean forward, pushing her puppy out of the way. ]
That's what everyone says until they're writhing on the ground and remembering that I've read all the books on healing. [ A tease more than anything but it has more than a little foundation in truth. She shakes her head, though, and offers him a little, sly smile. ] What about that locket for us? Just you and me, a personal network. So we can check on each other. Or one for you and your friends. I don't want you to be alone, Luke, even with a - um, batsignal.

My friends ... [ he makes a face; he's not really sure where his friends from home are, or what they're even doing. he's not really sure if he'd call them friends — outside of jason, since the kid refuses to let himself be labelled as anything else — to begin with. percy hates him, clarisse hates him, nico hates him — friends aren't meant to hate, if he can recall the definition of the word correctly. ]
[ being alone is one thing luke knows all too well. even when he's surrounded by people, he's the loneliest person in the room. it's not a concern to him to return to his former friend, one who seems to follow him even to drabwurld, despite being surrounded by many from home who confuse and agitate him with their lack of antagonism toward him. he exhales, clearly relenting and allowing her to draw some blood from the stone, ] It'll make you feel better if I say yes, won't it?
video » private
Don't tell me you don't have any. I'm sure you do, because you have me. [ and it's as simple as that, sorry luke, do not pass go and do not collect two hundred drachma. she watches him for a long moment, expression hard and curious, before she shakes her head and leans back. he doesn't look too upset, too desolate, and she can accept that -- for what it's worth, even if it's still not enough. one day she'll have luke smiling and laughing and that's all she really needs. as long as he's happy.
but, of course, first things first. ] Of course it will. I'm bossy with an attitude problem, I hope you know I always get my way.

Got a whole cabin full of them. [ or he did, once. if clarisse's comments on chris are anything to go by, he still has one friend. but his brother isn't here, just like annabeth and thalia. he doesn't make any effort to correct her false assumption at what he had wanted to say, but had ultimately dropped mid-thought. even though what she's gleaned from his own silence is inaccurate, he likes where it's lead, even if he won't so much as admit it. it's not so bad, having one friend and it being hermione granger, a bossy girl, but the brightest witch of her age. ]
[ it doesn't necessarily cheer him up, but it's something he'll steal away from this conversation. he brightens by the tiniest miniscule, it evident upon his features. his smile is small, just like his laugh, ] You're lucky, I'm used to being bossed around. [ by annabeth and thalia, but they're neither here nor there or anywhere close to drabwurld. there's a void; perhaps hermione will fill it in her own way. ] Though, you may want to consider all your hacker options. I'm pretty good when it comes to breaking the law — got a lot of time on my hands. It's probably best you don't add me to your Facebook group. [ this is luke speak for accepting her proposal officially. it's the least he can do, right? ]
video » private
Still, she knows there's something. There's something behind his words that he's not telling her and that's fine, she can accept that. There are things she doesn't tell anyone else, either, things that make her heart feel heavy and things feel wrong. She doesn't talk about how terrified she is by everything here, despite the friends she's making. She doesn't mention how inadequate she feels when she doesn't know how to do something or how to help. She doesn't even mention feeling alone, sometimes, when travelling, not entirely capable of understanding the culture she has immersed herself in. She just keeps smiling and she's going to keep doing it for Luke, no matter what. ]
Good. Otherwise I'd have to make you get used to it and I don't think anyone wants that. [ The small smile is enough for her and she nods - though it doesn't stop her lips turning down in confusion, absolutely baffled by what he's saying. ] I think I understand what hacking is, at least on a basic level, but... Luke, what's Facebook?
video » private
Uh. [ shit. how does he explain something he takes for granted? facebook is facebook. even dad would suck at explaining it without tripping over himself in the process. ] Like MySpace? [ she probably doesn't know what that is, either. perhaps he should start with the basics. ] Online social networking site where you post statuses about the dumbest things. Like "Hey, I spoke to a pretty girl today."
[ and as an aside he doesn't cut himself off from giving: ] My dad claims he created the Internet. I'm still waiting for him to boast about Facebook.
video » private
Still. MySpace? Facebook? They sound ridiculous. ] I've never heard of any of these things, really. I think you might be a little father in the future from me than we originally thought, Luke - but I haven't had a lot of time to spend on muggle technology lately, though. Maybe it's my fault entirely.
[ She shakes her head, lips pursed. ] I'm sure he'd take the credit for a lot of things if he could, right?
video » private
Anything that's remotely successful and favoured by all? Made by Hermes. [ maybe his father has a little bit of an ego when it comes to his inventions. luke honestly thinks he needs to project that pride onto his kids. ]
[ but rather than follow in the footsteps of his own wish and project that bitterness into his conversation with hermione, he follows the much preferred flow she's inadvertently directed them in. her concern is a tough pill for him to swallow; he's gone for so long skidding beneath the radar of so many people that he's used to it. he expects those around him to not press harder, poking him as if he's some animal that will bite the hand jabbing its finger into his ribcage to see to it he finally stirs from his slumber. the front he'd put on at camp still lingers with him, like a mask he can sit on his face without feeling any difference, despite not being that boy anymore. everyone knows he's angry, everyone but those who aren't from his world where he had tried to tear it asunder. it's difficult to let people care when not many have in the first place. ]
[ it's difficult to let anyone care when he doesn't, himself. ]
If you and I are ever at the Station at the same time, maybe I can show you YouTube. Great things to be found on there. [ he pauses for a very brief moment, tone shifting into a deadpan. ] A lot of cat videos.
