Most humans in my world are afraid of spirits.

It's hit or miss, in mine. People are okay with the Moon, but the Face Stealer? Not a chance.

And for a long time, they had to stay in the spirit world, so they were hard to see or find or talk to, except on the solstices.

Well he's not confined — he's one of the old ones, and powerful. He can still steal faces from people in the human world.

And what does he do with those faces?

Wears them.

To trick others, I presume?

To steal another one, yep. If — if you make any expression at all, or show any emotion, he takes yours. So switching them is how he surprises people into losing theirs.

I think so. He's old, maybe even older than the Moon and Ocean, and it's not like has anything to take care of. If he steals someone's face, they can't be reincarnated, so...
