It's been a few days since we arrived, hasn't it? That's right, I was wondering how many of us have gotten nice and cozy in our new homes! But it's a reeeal shame for the less adventurous. After all, setting foot outside with all this magic flying around seems a little scary, don't you all think?

[Kano gives a small laugh.] Ah, but staying safe inside is real dull, too! So, so, until my friends pick me up, let's play a small game, okay? The rules are veeeeeery simple. I'll give you my name and two facts about my world. You'll give me yours and we'll both try to figure out who's lying.

[He chose to leave it open to both sides--after all, looking at a broader sample wouldn't hurt much.]

I'll even start off, just to make it easy. My name's Maru! I come from a place that's always summer--and crawling with monsters!

M'name's Gavroche! I live in an elephant an' I wanna join the National Guard.

[ THIS? This is fun. ]

You ain't have monsters where you're from, do you? You're lyin' about that one, I bet.

[He sticks to voice for now.]

An elephant? You'll have to do better than that!

[He feigns a heavy sigh.] Ehh, was it really that obvious? Everyone's been picking that one! I guess it wasn't a good lie in the end.

AAaah--I tricked you. [ Oh, man, Gavroche is proud of himself. Super, super proud. He actually pats himself on the back. ]

I ain't wanna be a part of summin' I disagree with. But I used to live in the belly of an elephant! Until here, a'course.

[He feigns a gasp.] What? No way, no way! How'd that happen?! It didn't gobble you up, did it?

[ This guy is fun. Really fun, actually. Gavroche contemplates ways to get him to keep talking. ]

'Ey. I'll tell you 'bout the elephant if you tell me 'bout the summer!

[At that Kano lets out a huge sigh.]

That's sure a hard deal! It's a reeeeally long story! Do you really wanna listen for so long?

PFfffffffft---I learned how to read an' write, I can listen to a story.

Fine, fine. But you gotta listen to the whole thing, you hear?

[What to make up now...]

Let me ask, does Gavroche believe in spirits?

Uh-huh. There's the Holy Spirit, after all, right?

Yup! Now, see, there was this great spirit that existed waaay before our time. She was quite lonely, since there was no one else of her kind, so she decided one day to change that. What do you think she did?

[ This is way too fun. Gavroche kind of scoots closer, even though he can't see anything, and tries his best to guess: ]

Made another person?

That's right! [Drawing people into his stories is always the fun part. It's a shame he can't see the boy's face right now--he bet it'd be a great sight to see.] She wandered aaall over the world to meet all sorts of people in order to figure out how to make someone like her. However, since she was something that wasn't human, the people called her a "monster."

Because of that, ah, well...

The thing she made... I guess you could call it a "monster," too, with how it turned out. Something was horribly wrong with it.

M'sieur! [ No face, sure, but there's a gasp of breath. ] Was the thing not human, either?

No, no! See, what the spirit saw was the monstrous side of humanity. What she made, then, was something to match it. [He lowers his voice.] It became a great and terrible beast. For centuries it'd torment the human race, killing countless people. It seemed like nothing would stop it.

[He pauses on purpose.] Ah, but... you might be thinking, this is where the hero comes in, right?

Yeah, yeah! He's gotta slay the beast--or remind the beast he got his own self? Maybe the monster jus' doesn't know?

Where's the hero, where is he?

Well, well, the hero's entrance wasn't so grand! You see...

What happened was that he found the spirit who made the beast. He was the first human to treat her kindly--because of that, she took pity on humans and set out to fix what she caused. The monster had grown too powerful for her to defeat, so she cast a spell... an eternal summer, in fact, on the whole world, since the monster was made out of the coldness of human hearts. Because of the heat it was forced underground to wait until the end of time to rise again.

And that's the story. Simple, isn't it?

Nnnn--Is it real?

Sure is. I don't have any reason to lie, do I?
