Anyone seen Daud recently? Big guy, doesn't talk much, no sense of humor. Last I knew he was here at the station but since people seem to have been dropped into places they didn't intend to be lately, I suppose he could be anywhere. Or nowhere. I'm trying to figure out which.

If he is gone, I call dibs on his stuff. [Well, it's not like Daud's going to need his stuff if he's gone.]

[ leaving, he means. he's surprised; what sort of a military operation lets its recruits go without at least trying to get them killed first? ]

To be honest, I don't know. [He's hoping however, because this is one 'recruit' who doesn't want anything to do with war.]

It seems logical though. If there's a way for us to come to this world, presumably there's a way for us to leave it. A way that doesn't involve dying, that is.

It does seem to indicate a certain inability to manage resources on the part of the rulers. Then again, a reluctant soldier can be worse than no soldier. Maybe they decided he was more trouble than he was worth. Or maybe he got eaten by an orc. Hard to tell at this point.

Reluctant soldiers can be made less reluctant without giving them their discharge. [ actually, he's beginning to wonder why there was such a lack of punishment around here. ]

[Javik hadn't really been keeping tabs on everyone he'd met here, and there were a lot of reasons a man like Daud would up and vanish. Still, it'd be nice to know why he was gone.]

I have neither seen nor spoke to him in some time. When did you last see him?

About a week ago. [House doesn't exactly keep tabs on people either but he does notice when people he knows suddenly change their patterns of behavior.]

I wouldn't think much of it but as far as I can tell, he hasn't been out to take care of his cleg and that's not like him.

Where was it you last saw him? And do you know where he kept his quarters?

With the cleg actually. I was out to check on its injured wing and he was there.

[Gee, thanks, Javik--House would never have thought to snoop around Daud's quarters.] I do, and he hasn't been there in a couple of days at least. Nothing appears to have been touched anyway.

Fair point. [He doesn't mind the lack of talking so much--most people don't actually have anything interesting to say. He does wish more people could take a joke, though.]

This guy can also teleport, so if you've seen a guy blinking in and out of existence, it could be him.

No, I think he was pretty much stuck with his body. If he wasn't, surely he would've found a prettier one. [Yeah, House is just being a dick now.]

Is that so? That is how Mr. Fëanáro described it when I did something similar. Your Daud isn't the only one capable "teleporting" as you say it.

I have not seen him either - I lost one of my kin similarly, vanished in the night. Is there a shard remaining?

[House takes a moment to look Maggie over. He doesn't look great but he's alive, which is probably about as much as can be hoped for.]

A shard? [Okay, so that's something House hadn't considered.] Not that I noticed. Does that mean he's still alive?

I... hope so. Lord Elrond vanished, leaving only a shard - presumably, his own, shortly after arriving at the station, and his wife, the Lady Celebrian fell into enchanted sleep. I ... I hope this means they live, and have merely returned home.

[House hasn't given much thought to the shards, other than the fact that it's apparently the reason he's in fairy land, and that losing it means he's dead. Beyond that...well, he's not sure what it means.]

That's probably a reasonable assumption, at least without any other information. I'm not sure going home would be such a good thing for Daud. I got the impression his world was not a very nice place.

No. But I suspect also that he would rather be home, and free to do as he wills then here and slave to the Queen.

[ Maglor observes dryly ] Will you need aid with his Cleg? I do not think he even got around to naming it.

Well, unless he's secretly my brother using a different name, I can't say I've ever met him. And Mako's been in the castle as long as I've been here, so. [ Shrug. ] But hey, there's a good chance he's just kind of making his way through the forest or something right now! Left his locket in a tree, ended up on a crazy adventure. You know, that kind of thing.

He's not really the crazy adventure type. Life-threatening adventures--absolutely, but not crazy. [Not that he doesn't appreciate the optimism but...he doesn't. Better to expect the worst and be surprised than to expect the best and be inevitably crushed by reality.]

Your brother sounds like a real winner by the way.

Yeah, he's great! Takes him a while to warm up to... you know, everyone, but he's got his own sort of charm. [ Earthbenders and honesty are generally a perfect match. This is not an exception. ] Is there a big difference between life-threatening adventures and crazy adventures? I guess not every crazy adventure is life-threatening, but you'd think that all the life-threatening ones are crazy.

There's definitely some overlap between the two but then it also depends on your definition of crazy. Some people think it's crazy to take any kind of risk. For the record, I am not one of those people.

Hm. Sure, I get where you're coming from. Kind of makes me wish there was an official scale with all these people from different worlds around. Like there's "drafted into a magic war" crazy and then there's "a spirit cow magically transported you into enemy territory" crazy… [ He furrows his eyebrows. ] I don't see much of a problem with risk-taking either, though. Sometimes it's not a great idea, but a lot of the time, it just kinda seems like there's nothing to lose anyway.
