[Sigrid is looking fairly haggard and pale. Behind her is the rugged green wilderness surrounding the Station, though the Station itself is not in sight.]

I'm in the middle of nowhere at all and I've got a bad leg. I couldn't find my locket and I had to ask a thrush to find it for me. A thrush. I'm talking to thrushes and they answer me. Anyway I need help. The thrush said he'd go and find someone, but I don't know who he meant. Does anyone know if thrushes are wise birds or silly birds? If he brings back a bear or something, I've got to hide now.

Siri, darling, do you know what to do should you encounter a bear due to a traitorous thrush?

[Might as well teach her something about escaping bears. She seems a nice enough girl.]

[Blink.]

I'll give you a hint, then: in no way does it involve putting your head between your knees.

[Might be a longish lesson.]

That's good.

[A slow blink.]

I know it doesn't involve running very fast, either.

It does if it's an uncommonly slow bear. Or a bear with just three legs. Or no legs.

[All situations are conditional.]

Surely someone heroic will rescue you long before it comes slithering upon you.

[Wonder of wonders, she smiles a little.]

What about a regular bear? I know you can't outrun it and you can't outclimb it. Do you hold very still and play dead?

Me? I'd distract it.

But not by dressing as a lady bear.

[A gleam comes into her eye, and a smile she can't quite suppress comes to her face.]

I shouldn't say so. How would you distract it?

You see that tree over there? [Jack points directly into the locket, though he's pointing truly off to the north-west. In an easterly fashion.]

[Sigrid glances behind her to look before turning back to the locket, awaiting reponse.]

[When she turns back, Jack is basically gone. Well. He's just peeking into the locket now.]

It always works, really!

[A choked laugh.]

I can't believe I fell for it! [Seriously, Jack may as well be a magician. Suddenly Sigrid is acting her age.]

Now if you were a bear, and I'd said "Look! Honey!" and the bear behaved thusly, you'd buy time! You could run.

You could run, were your leg not all damaged and such. [Because there WAS that, after all. Ugh. It was uncomfortable, this feeling of pity. So distracting.]

I don't think it would work, somehow. Not unless the bear spoke your language, anyway.

Bears understand the international language of pointing. I have it on good authority.

Now then: have you anything to drink and or keep you warm whilst you wait?

[Sigrid laughs again, then shakes her head.]

No, but I've got help coming soon. I'll be fine, promise.

Lovely! When your hero sweeps you back to safety, you might try to practice your "look!" trick on him or her. Just to get exceptionally good at it. You might never know when it'll come in handy, lass.

[At least she was more smiley-laughy now. He felt less badly about not doing anything else to really help her out.]
