Well.

[ Well indeed. The Red Hand's plan didn't quite go as they wanted, but the Void didn't kill them all. That's something, right?

Of course, John doesn't say that, or much else that he's thinking about the battle or the Gem or the far worlds. He just shakes his head a little. ]

If anyone's ended up somewhere and has a hell of a long trip to get where they actually want to be, I might be able to play taxi for a while. I fully intend on checking all these new -- to us, at least -- places out, so I might as well be useful while I'm at it.

Yes, plus we have been given a chance to stop all those things we only could try to control before. What if we use the Red Hand to help foster good relations between shardbearers and non-shardbearers? Or find out information that will keep courts from going to war with each other.

[Honestly, there are so many things Diarmuid can think of that the Red Hand can do now.]

Might involve some more cloak and dagger, making sure harmful messages don't get to certain places and all that, but I think we can do it.

Gilgamesh has proposed an alliance between us and Leathann; could be beneficial.

He proposed it to me too, and I think it's a good idea personally. If we are going to try to sell ourselves as a neutral group, being aligned with one of the strongest--if not the strongest--neutral power around will help that a great deal.

[Because, when it comes down to it, as neutral and accepting as Redgate and The Cothromach may be, they are still led by shardbearers. Leathann is led by Gilgamesh who is now shardless. It's a big difference.]

Besides, who really wants to say no to being aligned with a floating island?

[ Still led by shardbearers, which in the grand scheme of things makes them not neutral at all. ]

If nothing else, it's a good place to start. Javik will be at the party; I imagine you'll be there?

[They are closer than some, though, with one leader who is shardless and one who has no idea why he even has his considering how little he cares for courts and the like.]

Yes, I definitely will. I suspect that my king would drag me there just to throw me off the island if I didn't show up.

Champion of Redgate. Shield of the Cothromach. Leathann's Spears as their Knight-Captain. Gilgamesh is my sworn king. Red Hand as a Commander, of course, and knight of the Amber Congregation.

I think that is everything. Oh, I suppose you can also include that I have taken a master so I am sworn to her as well.

[He suddenly laughs.]

It's a good thing I don't need to sleep and that I can travel so quickly.

I always felt that the more ties we showed we had, the more it would support our claims of neutrality. If we help many groups instead of one or two, doesn't that make us look more open to helping all?

The more we as a group, maybe. But one leader sworn to multiple people and groups? That's more suspect.

I am afraid I cannot agree with you there. Besides, my court is Amber and it is our duty to be helpful and aligned with as many as we can be.

[He raises an eyebrow at John.]

Though, you are one to talk. You have many alliances as well, along with being sworn to the Black Shuck.

I haven't sworn any oaths to anyone still in this world. As for the Shuck, I am a part of Death -- I physically can't turn my back on it. But I have no positions of power to conflict with my position in the Red Hand. You do. If the Hand is working on an operation and the Spears call you, which will you pick?

[All right, so he deserves that.]

At the moment, my court's agenda agrees with my own, so yes, I guess you could say I am. However, I think you are making conflict where none exists. There is a simple answer to your question. While I am sworn to the Spears and my king, he also gave me command to follow my my own path and desires above all else. The Red Hand is my path and my family. It has my loyalty first above all else.

It's something that others in the world will see, will assume to be a conflict. They don't know you, especially now that we're back in time.

Some may see it as a conflict as you do, but I believe others will see it as proof I live by the words I speak. Lets see if it causes any trouble before we go creating trouble that may not be there. If the time comes that it does cause too much trouble...

[Diarmuid lets his words trail off. While it hurts him to think of stepping down from some of the positions he has taken, the Red Hand does come first. He will do what needs to be done.]
