Like a hazy, transparent projection, embossed against the image as if poorly photoshopped in. ]

[ If there was something she wanted to say ... well, she doesn't seem keen on saying it. Or perhaps there'd been nothing of great importance to begin with. She just sits there looking amicably pleased, watching the little transmission locket in pure interest. ]

[ Look she'd only paid partial attention to what the fairies had said, to begin with. ] Anyway, bit of a strange question. Thoughts on, er, vampires? Werewolves? ... Ghosts? Just curious. Study purposes, personal interest. That sort of thing.

I've never met a vampire or werewolf, but I have met spirits... they can be really similar to ghosts. At least, it seems that way since they can haunt certain things. Does that help at all?

Eh; spirits, ghosts. They're usually the same sort of thing, I've found. Haunting is definitely a ghost-thing.

We've got different kinds of spirits, then. Before coming here, I was in a place where a spirit could be created from other things. They're just as alive as anything else, too.

An angry spirit haunting something still got pretty scary, though.

What, like a poltergeist? It isn't fun, I'll tell you that much. It's like- wait, you said a spirit created from other things? Like what?

Right, it was a lot like a poltergeist. Mm, I don't know too much about it myself, but there are spirits that are born from trees or birds, or even a mix of things like bones and feathers and dirt.

Oh... I've never heard of that, before. Sort've like an ... essence?

[ Colour her exceedingly sceptical. ]

Some of them are like that. Once a spirit is created, it might always... remain a simple spirit. Some can grow up and get stronger in the same way a child will grow up into an adult. And not all of them do, but a few even take on human form. Although then they're more like demons than spirits.

[He shrugs apologetically, knowing he probably sounds like a loon.]

That's probably a bit more than you were asking about.

Demons? But only if they take human form? I-Is that- that can't be right, wouldn't they just be ghosts, then?

[ Loon or no, it's more concerning in other ways. Demons didn't exist, did they? No, that was silly. But human-shaped spirits? And they were called demons? That didn't sound very nice. ]

Well, it sounds scary, but not all demons are evil or trying to hurt others. It's just like anything else, there's good ones and bad ones. It's complicated, but that's part of why "ghosts" isn't quite the right word to describe any of them.

Oh... But why call them demons then? Isn't that sort of always tied in with, I don't know, hell? Evil, horned, spade-tailed swinging bad guys? Or was that just supposed to be the devil--

They've always been called that because it's what they are. It's... humans and demons have never gotten along, and most people think that they really are all evil monsters. How can I say this? Neither side has ever given the other side a chance.

So they're just always bickering, then? Do most humans in your world know about spirits and ghosts and ... demons?

Bickering would be the nice way to put it. Everyone in the world I was in knew about spirits and demons and all of that, yes. Even though not everyone could see them, there wasn't any doubt that they exist.

Oh... It was just common knowledge? Weird. I can't imagine that going over well where I'm from.

Since it had always been that way it wasn't that weird to everyone else. Your England was um, normal then?

I didn't mean your world was weird. [ Although she cringes in clear mistake. ] I just meant... It's hard to imagine. Where I'm from it was ... Well I thought it was normal. Till about three years ago, actually. Then I found out all these other creatures exist. Didn't really believe it at first.

Don't worry, it actually is a pretty weird place, all things considered. I think it's always difficult when you find out that what you thought you knew was actually a lie, but when it comes to things that people might treat like monsters it makes it a hundred times worse.

I suppose so... It's not exactly fair though, treating them like monsters. Just because they're different.

... Okay, well some of them are.

I don't think it's fair either. If we can get along then I don't really care what someone is.
