I appreciate the sacrifice. Really. [He is going to back-kick you in the kneecaps dude, that was rude. But he lets it go shortly after, more openly curious now than anything.]

That's fair. I have a feeling hand-to-hand's going to be a lot of what I end up using anyway. [Just because he's not good at weaponry yet. Making weapons, yes. Using…not so much.] When you say every known weapon though…you're serious?

[And there's the laughter again, but louder this time. Hiro's fucking adorable.]

Well... yes. As soon as I was big enough to hold a sword, I was given one to train with. [A pause.] It was something of a game for my former master and his associates; they would toss me in the ring with some beast or another and give me a random weapon just to see if I could manage. Or none at all. The stakes were higher that way.

[Not adorable! :( The longer Hiro goes through puberty the more he's probably going to end up tsuning at people, sorry, Drabwurld. He huffs at the laughter, but it's secondary. Only because…he knows. He knows about this, he remembers Thrall telling him.]

I still hate that, by the way. [That he went through it, he means.] But at the same time…I mean don't take this the wrong way but I'm sort of glad it happened. You came out of it stronger and you were able to make things right and take things back. There should have been a different way.

…but whatever you're willing to teach me? I'm not gonna take it lightly. [Promise.]

[Thrall's tone softens, though as always it's rough around the edges.]

It took me a long time, but eventually I came to that conclusion as well. If my experiences have helped me become a better person-- if I can use what I went through to help others-- then I can accept what happened to me and move on.

[It's Taretha's death that he has trouble accepting...]

I know you will not take it lightly. The thought did not even cross my mind.

When would you like to start?

[It's a hard thing to talk about. And, of course, death is equally hard to accept. Hiro doesn't remark on it for the time being but he understands a little better now, at least.] And that's why you're the war chief, y'know?

Hmm, perhaps. [Hiro is very good about making other people feel better.]

I'll be heading to Leathann to help with the refugee efforts, but I can shorten my stay. Will you be free the last week of this cycle?

The last week? [Give him a moment to think on that.] Maybe. I need to check out some stuff first but...I dunno if I can head all the way out to Leathann? [Part of his Dad-rules.] I'll think of something though.

You don't have to. I can come to you fairly easily.

I suppose it's fitting that I'd teach you hand to hand. I remember asking if you needed help reaching one of the weapons when we first met, and you declined.

Pretty sure that was more out of not wanting to ask for help than it was learning how to use weapons. [At least he feels comfortable enough to admit that now.] But hand to hand's almost a little more versatile don't you think?

You've changed, then. [He's glad Hiro's coming out of his shell. It's been a while since they both arrived. Thrall can't detect the changes so easily in himself, but he's sure he's changed for the better simply by knowing the boy and taking care of him at times.]

It is, and I think it suits you. Luckily, I know some techniques you can use against larger opponents.

Something like that. [If he sounds a tiny bit embarrassed, it's because he is. He's not sure he'd really call this change, but...he likes to think he grew up a little bit. Slightly. But everybody around him has changed even if they can't see it. It's probably hardest to see it in yourself.]

Exactly what I'm talking about. I don't know if you've noticed, but I'm not exactly tall. That'd be awesome.
