[ Being a mother... isn't as easy as it sounds, Rin's painfully discovering. While the boy she adopted is a sweet little thing, he is also a boy and Rin is lacking in experience when it comes to boys that age. In Japan they were proper and didn't mingle much with girls so there's minimal experience from her childhood to go by. Growing up, there was a baby sister for a few years, but she doesn't like to think about those times either so it's no good. She's been a mother for a week and she's already crawling to her locket after asking around. Turns out most of her close companions either suck at parenting (thanks Saber for everything Mordred) or just planned to never have children at all (because that's helpful, Waver), leaving her in the dark. If only there were self help books available, but of course there's not.

Plus this gives her a reason to actually pester people. See what's been going on now that Caer Scima is rubble and everyone is scattered throughout the world. Let people know she's alive. Give them a chance to speak with her before she shut her locket for good. So here's one Rin, dressed tomboyish for her poking around for all to see. ]

Boys are really a handful, aren't they? No--before you ask--I'm not having relationship problems. I mean little boys. I'm not sulking, but it's really kind of hard to think of activities for someone his age-! [ She's brooding pretty fiercely by now. ] When I was seven years old, all I ever wanted to do was study, so why won't he?

[ Just in case anyone in Allaidh Darach needed further proof that Rin Tohsaka was a nerd. ]

I don't even know what to feed him since Emiya left. [ Yes, that's a public jab at his departure today. She's still a bit sour over it. ] He's a stupid boy, so he knows what boys need! What if I don't have enough of the right vegetables and his growth is stunted as a result. That can happen, can't it?!

[ There's a sound in the background that causes her to nearly drop her locket, the magus fumbling with it for a few seconds before it lands solidly in her palm. ]

Crap, crap, crap! What if he heard-?! Oh no, he's going to think he's an inconvenience and—[ Snapping the locket shut. It'll be a couple minutes to confirm it's clear before she replies to anyone. ]

[ It's a good thing she cleans up well. ] Really?

What kind of person do you take me for then?

[ ABORT. ABORT. Eren, if you value your life any-!! ]

Hmm...

[ Whoops looks like he completely passed over ABORT and instead hit full speed ahead. ]

Like the bossy type who tries to have it all under control. That you'd prefer be out doing something instead of sitting inside reading some book. [ A beat. ] But given what you were just talking about, maybe you can be a little clueless sometimes, too.

You can't just call someone clueless to their face. If you're going to point out someone's faults, it's best to word them with softer language as to not offend them.

[ Unfortunately for everyone here, Rin takes offense at every little remark no matter how kind it is. ]

I happened to have the best grades at my school back home.

[ "Softer language", this guy? Naaah. Whether she's really that bothered or not, Eren mentally shrugs it off. She can take it. ]

Were you? Guess I was wrong about you, in that case.

Of course you're wrong. I'm telling you that you're wrong. [ Huff, huff. Someone's high, mighty, and righteously offended by his opinion of her. ]

Anyway I take action only when I'm certain it'll succeed.

[ Oh, Rin, why are you always so huffy. ]

Only when you're certain? [ A beat. ] How can you be so sure about anything?

[ Lots of hot air mostly. ]

There are ways to determine results mathematically. A high enough percentage can pretty much become a hundred percent with the proper elements introduced.

[ Despite her haughty nature, she actually considers all things before dipping her toes into something. ]

[ Uh. Don't mind if his face grows dubious. ]

Saying you figure out that stuff with math doesn't make any sense, y'know that?

Haven't you heard the phrase the odds are against you? It has to do with math.

[ Hmph. ] Plus there's other things that help me make a decision. Instinct, for starters.

Running on instinct makes a whole lot more sense in this scenario than claiming you do math to figure it out...

You honestly believe math can't be used to win a battle? That's unfair.

[ Not that she has any recent proof to use to bolster her argument. ] What do you think a strategist's role is?

[ Eren takes a moment to think on this—because he knows strategists, and he tries to think of all the times Armin ever used his wit to get out of a tight spot rather than action. Of course, there's always different methods, and his closest friend was best at using manipulative words to turn a situation around, rather than numbers.

So. ]

Alright, alright. So how do you end up using it?

So a tactician is generally an individual skilled with war. They combine their instinct and knowledge of previous battles in order to bolster their decisions regarding current plans. While it looks like a simple process of elimination to those they work with, in all honesty they're calculating the probability with what will occur based on the information presented to them.

For example, there are five enemy ships approaching. Being able to determine each boat's length and width plus the average weight of a human soldier means they can predict how many are shoved inside. Furthermore, being able to track the distance and the average speed in which they can travel from the water to the shore, then prepare themselves on the shore gives them a window of time to prepare their counter attack or defenses.

It's pretty basic stuff, but it's still important. Being able to eliminate possibilities based on the elements means they don't have to set up defenses for everything which saves them resources as well as keep them from thinning their forces out.

[ ........ jfc rin.

So there's a pause. He's listening, of course, but that was way more thorough an explanation than he was anticipating. And one he can't refute, either. Okay, he concedes. ]

That's— [ Too much complicated bullshit for him to handle. ] Fine, maybe you have a point. [ And wonders if she actually goes around trying to figure these sorts of things out all day... ] But that stuff ain't for me. [ Y'know, obviously. ]

[ He only has himself to blame for her going off on him like that. ]

It isn't for everyone.

That's why strategists are highly valuable despite not contributing to the physical part of a war.

[ It's true, he had it coming... ]

Yeah, I know. [ And he does mean that genuinely. ] I'm not a stranger to it. People can do other things besides lifting their weapons in war.

You're aware of that, but you couldn't see the value of someone using math to formulate an outcome? Interesting.

[ She's teasing only a bit. ] So what do you do in war?

[ The teasing is met with a subtle pinch in his expression, but after a second's consideration, he doesn't bother arguing back. (This is hardly a debate he'd win, anyway.) ]

I fight, of course. [ Eren answers a lot like this should have been obvious. ] That's what I became a soldier to do.

[ To be fair, has he seen how young he looks ~~art style aside~~?? ]

So you fight.

You're just an ordinary soldier? You look too young to have accomplished much.

[ sob... isayama why. ]

I don't have a high rank or anything. [ Back home or here. Though, he isn't quite sure he could call himself ordinary anymore... Not when he essentially became a monstrous tool to use, so that reclaiming what was lost of the human territory was possible. On the other hand, Eren doesn't go freely sharing that information without good reason to. ] I didn't get the time to do a lot of what I wanted before I ended up here.

You're the hardworking type huh? [ She teases as if it wasn't already obvious to her. ]

So what is it that you want to do? You must have found some time to accomplish things here.

—Here?

[ He has a bigger goal he wishes to aim for, that much goes without a doubt—but it hasn't been accomplished, not really, because that goal pretty much involves winning this war. Making sure that "end of all things" never actually happens. And when Eren becomes focused on that one thing he wants to do, he doesn't think about accomplishing the little things, too. ]

... I want to make sure nothing happens to the world I came from. That's all.

You understand what that involves, don't you? [ Not that she expects him to say it over the locket, but she'll remind him of it regardless. ]

The best way to protect your world is to keep your shard safe, but then there's a whole court who intends to use this world against us. There's no winning, is there?

Yeah, I do.

[ He may not know every detail behind it, but he's accepted his place in this war. He isn't so reluctant about it anymore.

But then Eren ends up pausing briefly, shooting her a faintly puzzled look. ]

What're you saying that for? We can win this.
