Out of curiosity, has anyone else been looking into places to live outside of the court/as a second residence? The chaos of the past few weeks suggests that having a place to retreat in the aftermath may not be the worst idea out there.

I ask primarily to see if anyone else has begun the process and has advice on how to go about it.

I intend to begin looking for new fortifications within the week. However, the ability for the fairy kings and queens to simply send their forces directly to the other castle makes things... difficult,

I do wonder how land ownership works here, so if you find anything out, I'd like to know.

As for your concern - t might end up being something that just has to be calculated for now, and addressed at a later point.

The monarchs gave me a team of architects and construction workers. They said I could build a manor in La Llorona, if I wanted.

[As usual, Javik didn't bother with text communication. It was obvious he was outside somewhere, though it was difficult to pinpoint an exact location. The lack of trees put him far past the forest around Caer Scima, for which he was eternally grateful.]

I do not see how living outside the castle walls would be any safer than inside. The forest is hostile to both factions.

Indeed. For now, I shall seek land along the border. It would only be too easy for our own to be comes stranded in hostile lands. Better that they should have a safe haven to strive for on their return.

[And a place he might strike out at the enemy. He'd admit to his plan to simply seize Seelie land for his fortress, but he knows where Waver's sympathies lie here.]

[If "sympathies" means "totally getting a small house with a secret room to court allies and try and get the fuck home" then you absolutely have the right read on him.]

The only problem I can foresee there is that being that far from court, news can travel to you slowly.

It isn't about safety. It's about some semblance of solitude and quiet.

So you say, while forgetting the very trinkets we now use to speak. Distance is of no consequence in communication.

But not everything's broadcast over the network. Talk that filters through hallways is plenty valuable.

Then I shall have to find a way to attend to the halls as well.

It'd be something to consider, at the very least.

How do you intend to achieve either if a secondary residence is unsafe? We have been on the road for nearly three weeks, and no place we have been has afforded any peace of mind.

It's easy enough to do some research for magic that can protect a homestead. [Not that Waver will be detailing his security system to anyone.]

Do not confuse research with practical experience. [The only good scholar was one that could fight as well.] I can tell you to avoid Quendi. The city is dead, and it should stay that way. The trees will try to kill you, so any... 'magic' you decide to use should not waver for an instant.

If one does not conduct research one cannot design experiments to gain practical experience. [Waver's a professor of magic, he's used to dangerous experiments.]

That said, thank you very kindly for that information, I will make a note to avoid it. Any other places that I might consider not going near, since you're on the road and thus have a better idea of what to expect?

[Javik's research involved shooting things. If what he shot stayed dead, then the experiment was a success.]

Nothing as specific, no. Very little has been settled out here. As we have found, the native life is more than willing to consume whatever happens into its territory. If you must be warned to choose your location with caution, then you should not leave the castle at all.

I see. I'll take your words of caution and see if there are areas beyond the woods here that might be more hospitable, or else find neutral territories that won't side eye someone new moving in.

[It was nice to hear someone thanking him for his opinion for once, but how he felt certainly didn't translate into his expression or tone.]

It is my understanding that the Station is considered neutral grounds. We will find out when we arrive.

How much longer do you think it'll take to get there, based on your present location?

So long as we are not delayed, I estimate another week. Perhaps less.

[He wasn't about to go announcing their exact location, even if the Seelies were locked out of this communication.]

[Waver nods, trying to put the distance to the map in his head.]

Four weeks isn't too bad of a trip.

[Javik was about to complain about how they could make the trip in hours with the proper technology, but was interrupted when his horse stuck its face into the locket. Deciding it wasn't an apple, it let Javik push it away.]

If you are accustomed to this manner of travel, then yes, you would be correct.

[Waver bites back his own comment about well I'm not, actually but the horse's kind of kills that, and replaces it with a laugh.]

I'll let you go, so you can convince your means of travel that lockets aren't food.

Horses do not seem to understand that they will be food if they are not compliant. [He didn't sound like he was joking in the least.] If you wish to know where the Station truly stands in this conflict, then I will contact you. Give me your name.
