Someone told me once that it is not a sword that will change the world, but words.
[The locket picture is a bit askew. It's set on a table like a dressing mirror, showing a blonde woman sitting, the beads of a rosary flowing over her fingers.]
Then again someone else swore to me it was our duty as ladies to pray for those who kept us safe. Who fought and died for our country. It is the same concept, is it not? That wars are won and lost over words.
[Enough waxing philosophical for now, probably. It's time to face facts and there's still a polite, pretty smile on her lips even if she can't quite mask the concern in her gaze.]
It has been explained to me already but I must admit I still find it puzzling. There is no one better to explain a situation than the people living it so I beg a moment of your time. What is hoped to be gained by this or feared lost? What is needed of the people here and what might I do to make myself of use in a greater effort?
[A quick duck of her head, polite, and she glances up again as she reaches for the locket.]
I thank you most deeply for your consideration.

Of course, the climate you'll find is nothing short of hostile and divided. War's running red hot and there's anti-shardbearer sentiment among those that live here that does nothing to help.

There are levels of hostile and divided, I have found. It makes it quite the challenge but not an impossibility to resolve matters. Then again when loyalties are so divided, it might be no reasonable side is victorious.

You've come in at a bad time. Ten months ago, things were calmer, the war wasn't on in earnest, and there wasn't so much ill will brimming at the surface. Then again, it isn't like either side has been victorious yet in slaughtering the other en masse.
video;
It is... your duty? I do not understand. If your home must be defended, you pick up a weapon and you fight however you can. Your gender means nothing.
As for the point of this war... I know fairly little myself. It has gone on for longer than time cares to remember, and now the monarchs involve children in their conflict. [He doesn't care if he's saying that in public. HE DISAPPROVES GREATLY.] Children should not learn war. They should learn to be children.
video;
[She doesn't look impressed by that. So at least they are on the same page there.]
Monarchs often do not see the hardships they inflict upon their people. I Wonder if they have children whom they might worry for.
[And because Lia can't leave well enough alone.]
How young are children brought here?
video;
I have not heard of the monarchs having children, but I've only recently arrived.
[His expression darkens somewhat.]
Thirteen or fourteen years. That is the youngest I have seen so far. Surely there are others, and anyone raised here might find it difficult to escape the war as well.
video;
I have found that many rethink their plans of destruction when it is their own blood that must be shed.
[Perhaps not in this case. She still does not quite know enough, is trying to hold in her judgment until she learns a bit more but it is difficult.]
It seems harsh, for children to be put into this position. Perhaps helping the children affected by this might be a place I could apply my time.
video;
He isn't sure where one would start with helping the children affected by the war, but his expression eases somewhat.]
That... is a very good idea. I'm certain the children and anyone helping them would appreciate all the assistance they can get.
You would have my thanks as well. It isn't that I think myself above such things-- but I am able to fight, and so I should be defending those who cannot.
video;
[If only she knew where that was, who to speak to. She's so very unused to pitching herself into a fray without orders.]
How rude of me, monsieur. My name is Lia De Beaumont.

I do not know what you refer to, monsieur.

A weapon, then? Surely something of such power must not be advisable. How would you control it?

[Yes this situation is clearly escalating.]

Words won't change the world if a sword cuts the throat that would speak to them. And prayer is only truly effective for the pious.

There is another side to every course of action, I agree. It is rather difficul as well to decide how each might turn out.

[She's bad at this introduction thing, still.]
My name is Lia de Beaumont.

[And if the name is unfamiliar, its place of origin should be less so, just as Élise recognizes Lia's accent.]
You're also from France.

[It's good to hear a name that would be familiar, even if it is one she doesn't recognize right off. But just because they are from the same place doesn't mean they would know one another.]
I am. I live in Versailles, most of the time. In the Court of His Majesty Louis XV.
