[Voice/Open] 07 Shadows

["Son of a bitch," is pretty much what Nico's thinking at this point. For the moment, he's wedged himself in a safe, shadowed place so that he can get an announcement out. His voice is low, trying not to let any of the natives find out where he is.]

To any Shardbearers on either Court planning on ever visiting Leathann: don't. The Seven-Star Oracle, a very powerful and prominent figure here, was killed and they say it was a Shardbearer who did it. Things are going to Tartarus in a wrapped hand-basket.

Sir Lancelot, do you have anyone who can meet me at the Northwood Faerie Ring? I'm going to need a few hours of rest before I can get to the White Citadel today, and I'd rather have that rest in safety.

Of course things aren't literally going to the hellish place under the earth. That would be difficult since I don't think Tartarus actually exists here, and I'm glad it doesn't.

I think it's hearsay at this point. It's also entirely possible that they'll blame me specifically for it just on account of the fact that I visited her a week ago. I'm not too willing to find out if they will or not.

[He sighs, a little tired. While it's not a first for him to be ostracized, it's definitely going to be a first if he's accused of murdering their Oracle.]

You're right, but they're not thinking that way. They want someone to blame, and, right now, they're going to use us as scapegoats. It'll be even worse if it turns out to be true that a Shardbearer did it. Demonstrations may turn into outright riots.

Any news on the Shardbearer's court, or did you get out of there before anyone could even circulate those rumours?

No, I got out the moment I heard that a Shardbearer was being blamed. Expect news to get out to the rest of the natives, though. I don't think very many places are going to be safe after this.

No, and let's be blunt: with advancing armies, the locals are going to have more reason to abhor shardbearers than ever before.

That's for sure. I'll have to see if I can talk to her spirit when I have a moment to breathe. If not, then...I might have to consult other sources to find the truth.

I can keep an ear to the ground, but by the time it gets to my area, it'll be all speculation rather than anything close to the truth.

Assuming you get the time to tap her spirit, how do you plan on making that information credible? If the antishardbearer sentiment is that strong, you might not be listened to.

I might not be, but there may be some who sympathize with us that have a chance of being listened to just by being a credible source in their eyes. I just need to find a way to discreetly contact them without incriminating us further. If you know of any natives who might fit the bill, too, then that'd be helpful.

[There's one or two people that Waver can think of that might fit the bill, although exposing his contact network isn't exactly the best plan right now.]

I can start looking now. Another option available to you might be to consider making use of the written word. There's a printer in Treun that might be able to distribute any conclusions of your investigation, and a pen name might actually give you some credibility if you use it right.

If I had a drink I'd toast to it. But as I don't, I can tell you to keep an eye and ear out for his daughter, Servine. She wasn't killed when he was, and she may be stroking the fires more with this death having happened.

Seriously. Although, I'll admit it doesn't help that I did visit her a week ago.

Yeah. I'm in shadow right now, so once I've shadow traveled to the faerie ring in the Shipyard, I'll be at the Northwood's ring. I can't leave until I can get someone at that ring to look out for me while I rest for a few hours. After that, I should be at the White Citadel.

Okay. [ she has to pull out her map to 100% understand his path ( she hasn't travelled very much!! yet. ), but then she's nodding, even if he can't see it. ] I'm going to ask you a hundred questions when you get back, I'm sorry in advance. [ she grins ] But this really just makes me wish I didn't hesitate to just- go. [ travel. leave the Seelie castle? yeah. she hasn't exactly done that yet, not since they went out to look for the moon. and now she feels like a big scaredy cat for it. ] I would have liked to meet her.

[Despite everything, Nico can't help a small smile.]

I'm looking forward to it. Maybe the two of us should try for a quest next time.

No trouble at all, actually. Just a lot of archery training. It's starting to get a little boring over here.

Honestly? No idea. I'm willing to bet hearsay and some idiot deciding to stir up trouble for Shardbearers.

I suspect that maybe my visit with their Oracle a week ago might have given them the idea, but I can't say for sure.

Uh. Doesn't that make you the primary suspect in all of this then? Since you were like the last Shardbearer to see the Oracle.

Some have been lucky to leave before anything bad happened, but it's definitely not safe right now. With luck, it'll be resolved peacefully before anything else happens.

How do I know if I go there by accident?

...you know, with the way luck has it, I'm almost suspecting that something else there is going to demand the attention of one side or another sooner or later.

The warning is appreciated, of course, and extremely vexing, all the same.

It's hard to say what kind of action's going to be required, but I'm not going to be surprised if anything drastic will happen in the future. This isn't going to stay within Leathann, either, so I'm expecting a ripple effect.

Oh, definitely. It'd be more surprising if something drastic didn't happen...

Well, I'll keep an ear out, I suppose. I doubt it's impossible to salvage this situation, but it'll be extremely difficult and rather frustrating.
