Are the women in this world and your own given as much opportunity to defend themselves as the men?

[ she doesn't wait for any answers, giving a humorless snort of laughter at the locket before continuing. it's not a directly related addition to her question, but it's certainly on the same train of thought: ]

Ridiculous that those already holding power are given the privilege of training to the highest levels of their skills, but those most in need of it are left to rely on the protection of others.

Unlikely. Before I was brought here, we were close to absolute victory - or failure. Regardless of the outcome, all I have known is war and I do not intend to know anything else.

Well. You'll get your wish, then, if that's what you believe. You don't even wish for peace?

What I wish for irrelevant. My desire to win or live does not change the intent of my enemy or make them any less dangerous. Peace is simply a nebulous time between conflicts.

[ ...ah. katsa's suddenly not really comfortable with that sentence, and she struggles for a response. ]

[ because there's too much of herself in there, which makes disagreeing with anything javik has to say more and more difficult. and that's really... really troubling. ]

[Javik didn't look troubled at all - he had bad days, of course, but there was no remorse. He'd done what he had to do.]

I was raised and trained as a soldier, my talents and skills are devoted to the death of my enemy. Yes, I am a killer.

[If she wanted to put it like that, fine.]

I'd ask if you've ever wanted to be anything else, but I think I know that answer. But your enemy can still die, can't it? So there's still an end that can come.

There have been times I wondered what I could have been, without the war. A scholar, perhaps.

[But even Shepard had dismissed that suggestion. Her gut feeling was that he still would have wound up a soldier.]

Despite their claims, the Reapers are still mortal. An end may come, but I doubt I will live to see it.

I've not wondered. [ she doesn't elaborate on the somewhat distant statement. katsa has never been able to imagine, or really even thought to imagine, what she would have been if she had not been born with her grace and in randa's court. she can't see herself as anything different, so while she's curious how others might think, she doesn't press any further. ]

For your sake, or your other people's sake, I hope that end comes soon.

As I said, we were close the victory or defeat before I was taken. Now I must fight this war to see the end of my own.

Explain your earlier statement about those in power having better access to training. Have you been denied the opportunity?

No. I've plenty. More than most, in fact, though for different reasons. [ frown. ] I'm only wondering about others here, for I've met a few whose situations seem the same as those vulnerable in my home kingdoms.

I have met a few shardbearers with little to no combat experience. One was a doctor. While he largely relied on us for protection, he still made attempts to learn, and arm himself. All one need do is take the initiative, or learn on the field if they are that unlucky.

[Essentially, he had no sympathy for people that cowered and hid, or complained about not being able to fight. Caer Scima was not a kind place, and there was ample opportunity to learn.]

[ katsa's temper boils suddenly out of her control, and her response to javik is very, very snappish. ]

If you're that blind to the situations of others, to the realities of different lives in different places before this one and the difficulties that face even those who strive to learn, I've no desire to explain it to you.

[ and she slams her locket shut on him. bit of a temper tantrum and a bit of a lack on her own side to think about what javik is saying (and it's not that katsa of all people is eloquent, either), but... well, when she cools down, he'll have given her something to mull over. and she'll want to talk more soon. ]
