Are the women in this world and your own given as much opportunity to defend themselves as the men?
[ she doesn't wait for any answers, giving a humorless snort of laughter at the locket before continuing. it's not a directly related addition to her question, but it's certainly on the same train of thought: ]
Ridiculous that those already holding power are given the privilege of training to the highest levels of their skills, but those most in need of it are left to rely on the protection of others.

[ a nod. ]
I had training from a young age, yes.

[ she wants to ask about aveline's training, but there are a number of things to which katsa wants to respond. she'll have to get around to it in a bit. ]
We have division of another kind as well. Not exactly looked down, but still avoided and feared for being seen as unnatural. I suppose if you didn't mention it, you don't have Gracelings as well?

[ She wracks her mind, but is quick to come up empty when it comes to it. Aveline shakes her head. ]
No, I can't say that I'd be familiar with such a thing existing... at least by the name. But it sounds as if they're seen similarly as mages, or those with magical talent are in our world.

[ frown. ]
Magic is feared in your world—in another, the people with it had power in society. In my world, Gracelings are given up to the king for him to use their skills as they see fit, unless it's a useless Grace, in which case they're sent home to be turned away from all jobs and any normal place in life. Is that the same?

Those who are never taken or escape are called Apostates. They must hide, because it is against the law for them to be on their own or for others to harbor them.
[ that's only touching the surface, but she doesn't deem it wise to bring up tranquility, and after what happened her beliefs in the system have been a bit. Shaken. ]

Finding someone's lives to control. Taking them away. Binding them physically, binding their thoughts.
