This is disgusting -

[ a voice that's rich in sarcasm and annoyance is heard and then a loud thud as a book slams against a table. a moment later regina mills comes to view, white silken blouse, black woolen coat, dark pants, impeccable hair given the situation and an expression that reads that she is, without a doubt, 120% done.

She stares at the book as if it had personally offended her and with a flick of her hand it goes flying across the room. ]

To those who call themselves the High King and Queen -

[ there is poison on the very way she pronounces those words. ]

Expecting me to fight for you is about as stupid as you interfering with the very weapon I would need even if I had wanted to. I have little to no idea what you or this misshapen world had done to magic.

Looks as if this place is managed by farmers if to judge by this inner decor.

You can't possibly believe that. Or are we to believe these lockets are given us so we can comfortably chat? they can listen to every word, even if they don't make themselves known.

I wouldn't be surprised if they're listening. But they don't respond to anyone. Why should you be any different?

[ she's not one to explain the theory of heart removal but if they are listening, then she wants them to know exactly what she would do to them if they ever interfere with her magic again. ]

I've no idea about the "when". Every few months, I think. I've only met with my own queen twice -- once at the formal audience, and once for a private meeting.

[Not a pleasant experience.]

But regardless, any audiences would be in the throne room of whichever court you're a part of.

A private meeting. I wonder, what did you have to do to achieve such a -- rare audience with the queen?

None. I do not serve any king or queen, as much as they'd want to even remotely consider the idea.

[ but then, grumpily, she adds: ]

Relax, I understand. I'm Unseelie as well.

[And just as unhappy about it. But he knows better than to flaunt that.]

You won't be forced to serve them, if that's any comfort. Plenty of us have found places for ourselves outside of the court.

[ tell her to relax but she takes a deep breath, a voice in her mind telling her she is simply on edge and shouldn't alienate people on the go. it sounds suspiciously like snow white and she finds the whole thing revolting, in all honesty. but fine. ]

I'm "here" in the sense of this world, because no one has discovered a way home. But otherwise, you're mistaken. I live away from the court, and I generally avoid everything to do with the war.

[Outwardly, anyway. Anti-court activity probably still counts as "things to do with the war", but it's not the sort of thing you should be advertising.]

That aside, you'd have to ask someone else about past attempts at resistance. I haven't heard anything, and I'm not in the habit of prodding sleeping dragons.

How long do you think they'll allow anyone to stay neutral? we're here for one reason alone. to fight. those who will become unproductive, they will draw them in by force or they will be disposed of.

[ regina mills and optimism but in all truth, it's exactly what she would have done. ]

Again, you're mistaken. We aren't soldiers. We're here because of the shards within us. Whether you consider yourself a part of your court or not, your shard still counts towards that court's tally. Why do you think we're granted such hospitality? Plenty can get away with "neutrality", likely because the monarchs know that it's better for those unwilling individuals to stay out of the way where their shards are safe, rather than force them to fight halfheartedly and possibly lose their shards.

Oh, please. Do you really, honestly, believe these nonsense? did they actually convince people of this bluff?

this is worse than the whole 'fairest of them all' crap.

I believe it because I've seen it. Shards shining in their bearer's chests, and men who kill to collect them. You can talk like you know everything about this place once you've had someone trying to rip yours out of your chest.

I know all about ripping and I also know quite a bit about how easily can look like one thing while actually being another. But.
