Beside him is the knife that must have done the job; there are still a few strands of coarse dark hair scattered about and his voice is deeper than usual and hoarse.]

Thorin has left this place. For those that had business with him...my brother and I will pick up where he left off.

[Standing beside Kili, hand placed on his brother's shoulder, Fili nods when the announcement is done, his own expression grim.]

[ He may not be a dwarf, but he can tell when someone is clearly in mourning. Then there's the matter that when he went to find Thorin today in order to discuss their lands, the would-be King Under the Mountain had vanished and his rooms were being cleaned out in Caer Glaem.

But he saved a few precious items, at least, with not a handful of harsh words to the servants who wished to take them. ]

I have Thorin's shard and Orcrist. [ Saying nothing of the effort he went to, to get them; they won't care, so he keeps the topic on the stark truth. ] Will you come for them, or would you rather I held them in my possession until I might place both in your hands? I am loathe to send a courier.

[ That comes off disrespectful, even if Thorin wasn't a king. For long. Thranduil can certainly afford him better regard than a common delivery service. But, hey, maybe they will simply want the items as fast as possible, it's best to check. ]

[Thorin's shard has been on Fíli's mind, and his eyes widen. Thranduil's message raises a few questions, but he leaves them, exchanging a look with Kíli before he answers.]

Shall we meet halfway between Caer Glaem and Cothromach, on the road that lies between the two? I cannot be away from the newest arrivals of Elvenkind for long, but my steed makes good time.

[Kili nods eagerly, nearly pushing his brother out of the way.] Aye, as soon as you can make it.

I shall give word when I plan to set out. [ Which will be delayed because of his attack from the dogs, although he doesn't know that yet. ] Did your uncle speak to you of his plans to build a home in the mountains that face the forest river, on the southern flank of Caer Glaem?

[Thranduil's question takes Fíli by surprise, too -- Thorin mentioned that to the Elvenking?

He hesitates, but gives a slight nod.]

He did. Our plans are likely to change, unless he returns.

[Kili is just as started as his brother. That Thorin would share such information with Thranduil of all people is startling, and Kili shares a quick glance with Fili before turning back to the locket.

This is strange new information to mull over.]

I spoke to the High-King on his behalf regarding the land, though he also wished to talk with your uncle alone. We were to live across the river from one another, for we were not friends but neither were we enemies and would rather know the ruling force that was our neighbour.

[ Allaying the surprise, his smile is a small one. ]

He watched over my enchanted son while Legolas slept and I battled in the Desolate Lands. Though I fully intend to have the Maechenibryth, as it will be called, an Elvenhome away from our native lands, you will both be made welcome in Thorin's stead.
