Okay, I get it. [ Tess' tone is brusque, cool, almost flippant. She feels fucking weird talking into a locket, of all things, but it's been a long damn time since she's had anything like a phone, so hey, might as well try this out, right? ] This place is magic. [ Tess glances aside for a moment, her eyes flashing with - fear, maybe. Not that she would ever admit that. ] Because I can live with magic and shit if there's no infection to worry about.

[ Surely by now she's been told there's no such thing. What does that word even mean, it sounds so absurd. Something vaguely about being a fungi rests in her mind, but she doesn't really speak on it. Reading it flippantly in a book in class one day doesn't make her an expert. ]

What sort of fairy tales are you familiar with? I haven't read one that involved a war of this extent in my life.

I really couldn't give two shits about a war, not my problem. Or fairy tales, for that matter. They were never my thing.

I'm not on any side, and I haven't done anything to anyone. And trust me when I say, people have been trying to kill me for most of my life. It's nothing new.

You are choosing to remain neutral? A noble feat, but is it really feasible in this place? It might be easier to just keep your head low while feigning interest in the side you've been chose to represent.

I've been here three days, kid, but yeah, generally speaking I try to stay on my own side.

Three days isn't enough to determine everything that's gone on here. Both courts keep details hidden from those they've brought in, you know. It's for their own good mostly so no one could fault them for it, but I hear there are repercussions for choosing to not fight under their banner.

Do you believe if you stubbornly say no that they will send you home? What's to keep them from killing you themselves to take your shard?

I don't care what's happened here or what the guys in charge want. In my experience the guys in charge are usually all assholes who don't care about me, so why should I care about them?

I never said I wanted to go home. They can have their shard, as long as I get to live.

So let me see if I'm following you correctly as to make sure there aren't any assumptions going on between the two of us.

You care not for the politics of this world because the leadership in your opinion don't care for you, which makes sense. A lot of words are set up like this. However, you're ready to relinquish what makes you special enough to come here just in order to stay alive in a world... you don't care much for?

I'm a survivor. That's all.

Not much except what use would they have for you once you refuse to fight? You'd be less than a commoner here without much to make a name for yourself.

From what I've gathered, it'd be safer to work for a little bit of coin from the nobles first before throwing away your shard. The opportunity for missions after becomes a trickier matter.

I've always made my own way in the world. I don't need to be of use to anyone else.

Are you not aware of the kind of world you've been whisked away to? Commerce and trade is of importance here. If you have nothing to give, how will you support yourself?

Kid, I know how commerce works, I've been in business for the better part of two decades. I don't need a shard in my body to do that.

[ Right, she is a kid. No matter how experienced she might be, everyone who speaks to her will assume the obvious: she's a pampered student. It might be a good idea to go with this, so she nods feverishly. ]
