I'm looking for someone. [ no doubt, a tried and true phrase the lockets have played before. Connor tacks a piece of paper to the locket so that everyone can see his drawing of a demon. it's sketchy and messy, but a pretty good likeness considering he was being beaten up during his confrontation with it. guess he inherited one more thing from his father's side. ]

He's over seven feet tall and made completely out of stone. And he's mine. [ and by the look on his face and the tone of his voice, that clearly means MINE TO KILL >:[ !!!! but the sassmasters of eachdraidh are welcome to poke fun at him anyway. he lowers the paper, revealing the rest of him and the lovely decoration scheme caer scima's rocking. ] He'll try and kill you, but I don't have to really warn you guys about that, huh? From what I've heard of this place, that's what we're supposed to be doing.

[ killing each other!!! guess who hasn't been given the 'make love, not war' lecture of his life. there's no clear sign on his face that explains what he thinks of that exactly. He moves to turn off the locket and hesitates. ]

I want to know. [ how do I get out, who can I beat up right now, where can I find Angel -- ] Who's winning the war?

[ less fred and more cordy now, not that that's a bad thing. he sort of feels bad right about now. he wanted this to be a 'demon. mine.' kind of thing, not a 'sure is apocalypse-y in your hometown' sort of thing. ]

It's bad. [ Connor admits. how comforting, like father like son ] But people are still fighting. It won't get past LA.

[ this is the closest he'll ever come to acknowledging team angel ]

...Not that I'll be of much help, but. [ he purses his lips and shrugs. let's not stew in his own anger at being left out of the action and in fairyland ]

I'm sure it won't. [ get past la. ] LA's got good people. And if you're that keen on taking out old Crackle-Skin up there then it sounds like you're good people too.

[ which means it might be time for a friendlyish intro. ] Nice to meet you, Connor. I'm Buffy. Wish the circumstances were better.

[ good people... would he count as one of them? 'you are', Angel would no doubt insist, but that was before Connor sunk him to the bottom of the ocean. he's been playing midnight avenger, but he's never quite thought of himself on the same level as the rest of angel investigations. he looks a little embarrassed. it's not like she said anything wrong, more like he's just surprised. plus, buffy's pretty so... there's like hormones at work here too, embarrassingly enough!! ]

...Yeah, same here. [ MOVING ON. awkwardly ] Where are you from? You said you grew up in LA, but are you close by?

I guess I used to be. Yeah. Close. Just a not-so-sleepy little town with the very deceptive name of Sunnydale. [ the last thing she knows from home is the gaping crater that once was sunnydale. but now what did she have? ] Just a few hours drive outside the city but -- God -- some days it feels like lightyears away.

Sunnydale. [ he knew it was sunny something or the other ]

Where the hellmouth is? [ is instead of was, because connor's far behind too ] No wonder you sound like you know your stuff.

[ holtz has told him about it before. BEACON OF ALL EVIL and all that ]

Whoa-whoa-whoa. Back it up. Back it waaaay up.

[ that last dredge of flippant attitude drained from her expression and her voice. ] Where'd you learn about the Hellmouth? [ seriously there are people who'd lived in sunnydale all their lives and never even suspected. ]

[ he blinks, and replies instinctively ]

From my father. [ and then he gets this look on his face, the sort of look one would have if they wanted to kick themselves in the foot. because holtz isn't his father, even if he sometimes thinks that way. ] And other people. The ones in LA.

[ isn't that a great save ]

Sounds like you run with a pretty rough crowd.

[ she takes this as a game-changer. a world-spinner. a mind-blower. it's rare enough to run into pure strangers back home who know what a hellmouth is, let alone where one is. but here?

suddenly she takes his talk of apocalypse a whole lot more seriously. ]

[ by all rights, they should probably count as the rough crowd. every day demon dealings, every other day apocalypses, but Connor's definition of rough crowd is more like actual demons. ]

They're not really a crowd. There's only... six of them. [ he almost didn't count lorne. ] I don't really run with them either.

No? You just -- what? Overhear them chatting up demonology and hellish hotspots at the deli counter every morning?

[ he did eavesdrop that one time...... he frowns. ]

No. [ he doesn't fancy explaining that he was kicked out, especially to buffy, who's already established herself as an Apocalypse expert. he doesn't want to look lame?? ] It's complicated. I come over sometimes, but I don't stay with them.

[ she might be getting 'kicked out of the clubhouse' vibes from him though ]

[ oh. hun. buffy knows that feeling -- victory might have been achieved, but she still carries the melodramatic scars of a mutiny.

yet self-indulgence isn't on today's menu. in the end she figures this guy's roughly on par with dawn, age-wise. if she was these 'other people', she'd try and protect him too.

hah. ]

What else do these people talk about, hmm?

[ a part of him doesn't want to say out of pure teenage difficulty, while the other part of him is thawing out faster than if, say, angel had asked. this isn't like cordy, he tells himself, he can totally say no to buffy!! ]

You've pretty much covered it. Demons, saving people from demons, working magic that usually backfires on them. Things like that.

[ okay, so maybe it's harder than he thought ]

Vampires?

[ she tries to make it sound cool. and oh-so-casual. and not a big deal. like some off the cuff question. but in reality she's pining for information. she wants to know with what kind of forces this connor kid has found himself allied with. ]

[ vampires will always be a sore subject for connor. if only he knew buffy was the vampire slayer. instead, he wrinkles his brow ]

Too busy hunting them to hang out with them. [ he looks sullen at the suggestion, but ] ...There's a vampire, but he has a soul. He's not the same as the others.

[ oh for goodness sake. ]

What a coinky-dink. I know a vampire. With a soul. In LA. [ ... ] You're right -- he's very much not like the others. Do you hunt him too?

[ not that she's worried. angel, she hopes, can look after himself. but it's worth asking. ]

[ WHAT A QUESTION. he looks startled, then hesitant for probably 100 reasons. ]

Angel. So you know him too. [ he says it with only a trace of surprise. it's mostly resignation at this point, FIGURES that angel knows all the cute girls. ] And no, I don't. I used to, but things changed.

He's fighting the good fight now, isn't he? He's different from what he used to be.

[ he says it flatly, matter-of-factly, but not with the sort of tone someone happy about that would sound tbh ]

Very. [ usually. ] He and me. We...used to run in the same crowds. It was no biggie.

[ understatement of the freaking year. ]

[ understatements all around!! but that resonates in him. at least, the 'used to' sounds familiar. for a moment, he hesitates ]

Same crowds like... vampires? [ was that an attempt at humor??? probably. he's got angel's awkward smile down pat, at least ]

[ kid you are disarmingly charming in that poorly socialized way that should be really damn familiar but she can't quite place! ]

Oh my God. No. I mean -- yeah, but only in the co-staking capacity. I promise I'm fang free.

[ she'll never figure it out ]

Guess that makes the two of us then. [ sure she could be lying, but hey, knowing Angel sometimes gives people a free pass. ]

That's a relief.

[ you're pretty endearing already, connor. and she would have to have to end you. ]

[ and then in a separate thread connor discovers that spike is a vampire. he's silent, just long enough for it almost become awkward before he speaks up, one hand carding through the back of his hair ]

You'll keep it in mind, right? [ quickly ] The Beast. He's broken through dimensions before, so it might happen again.

Trust me. Now that I've seen that face? [ even if just in drawing format. ] I'm not about to forget it. Consider my ear to the ground, Connor. If he pops up you'll be the first to know.

[ well. second. ]

[ the tension leaks out just a little from his shoulders ]

Thanks. [ it's genuine. a place as big as the drabwurld meant that he wouldn't be around 24/7 to check ] He's my responsibility. [ 'I don't want anyone else to get hurt.' wolfram & hart had been his fault, before angel had said it wasn't. but the beast had followed him there, hadn't he ]

People here probably have enough to deal with as it is.
