I was able to outrun them most of the time.

Some. They took after my horse. The animal is well-trained for riding and hunt and a little for the jousts, but it has to be introduced to danger slowly. He took a fright when he saw one of the creatures. Nearly threw me off.

That handsome little man was most likely a dwarf, I would think, though were it Fili as I suspect, then he should not take too great offence at being called that.

Simply, it is a dwarf who does not much like my kind. Mistaking an elf for a dwarf? Cannot go well with him at all, though perhaps not as terrible as mistaking him for an elf.
