I am Councilman Tarrlok, Representative of the Northern Water Tribe in Republic City.

[...A title he's pretty sure has been revoked by now, but he likes using it and most of the people he's already met have never even heard of Republic City and won't dispute his claim to a seat on the council.]

[That was only partly out of genuine concern, it was also partly to make himself look good and partly because he didn't have anything better to go back home to so he may as well try to be useful here.]

Briefly, yes. Unfortunately, she was too busy to stay on my task force for long.

That is unfortunate. [ A crying shame, really. ] You command a task force as part of your responsibilities, then?

One of my responsibilities, yes. I went out with the rest of the team, though; I didn't merely stay in my office giving orders.

[But he had a very powerful form of bending to use if he was ever really in trouble, so that wasn't as brave as he made it seem.]

[ A real go-getter, apparently. ] What sorts of things did your task force do?

It was put together to combat an extremist group known as the Equalists. We mostly gathered information, infiltrated known Equalist bases, and interrogated prisoners.

That's quite a bit of work. [ And work that meant he had useful skills. ] And you say that was only one of your responsibilities as councilman?

As head of the council, I was quite busy. No matter, though, I was willing to do whatever it took to protect the city.

[Also he has no friends and no family so it's not like he was missing out on any time with them.]

The labor was its own reward? You must have been quite looked up to by your citizens.

I like to think that they did, although every leader has to make tough decisions that might not make everyone happy.

I know where you're coming from there. What's important is doing what's best for the people.

And what's popular with the people isn't always best.

[Unless he's popular, than it's definitely for the best.]

Frustrating, isn't it? Sometimes people just don't see the obvious truth in front of them. That's our load to bear as leaders.
