What they do is sort of what it sounds like.

Laws. But what do they do with them? Keep them? Make them? Enforce them?

Whatever needs done. They can't make them, but they can fight to change them or change them. Like if someone had a locket that was given to them, but someone else calls 'em a thief. They could get one to prove it or suppose the other can find a way to prove they're a thief when they're not.

Are they like champions, then? Do they fight for their patrons before the eyes of Gods and men?

Sure, if sitting in a court room debating who's right is fighting. Mostly it's just boring since it's all law talk.

Does no one ask for a trial by combat?

Uh, I'm pretty sure that's frowned upon by a court.

Not the courts here. Like a court of law. You know, a group of people who decide if you're getting shipped off to prison or not.

Would that responsibility not rest with the King? Or even his Queen? She seems to hold such power of her own in these lands.

No. Mean, even if it did there's thousands of people, isn't there? Someone's got to be able to help judge things. That's why there's lawyers to give evidence and a jury to decide what to do. If you go too much power to one person they'd go mad with it.
