1st Chassé | Action for the Bailey in Seelie Court/Video for Both Courts

[When the video turns on, it's actually a small stream of what appears to be someone spinning the locket over and over in the palm of their hand. There's a small laugh that follows, along with a tone of disbelief.]

Not quite what I meant when I said I wanted a new cell phone.

[Give it a moment before the video rights itself to reveal a blonde boy wearing a hat and stretched out on a bench in the Bailey of Caer Glaem. He appears to just be regarding the locket thoughtfully before he continues.]

Okay! So…hi. [Yes, thank you Ryan.] I'm Ryan, and I'm gonna be honest here I'm still not sure I'm not just dreaming all of this. I've been told I have a pretty vivid imagination. [There's a lopsided grin that follows.]

I guess I'm just sort of curious. Is anybody happier to be here than wherever they came from? [He's also got the map the fairies gave him clutched in his hand and he sort of just waves it in the video feed.] …also anybody know how to read a map? ["Besides everyone but me?" It's a sheepish request and he doesn't particularly like asking, but why learn how to read a map when you come from a place where you have chauffeurs, a GPS, or a twin sister who drives a narcissism mobile? He'd always assumed he'd learn how to read maps during the summer before he went to college and that's still a few months off.] I want to check out the rest of these places but I'm not sure where to start. Thanks a lot.

Wouldn't know. This is sort of my first time in a magic land.

[He regards the locket thoughtfully though.] I didn't even think of that. Thanks, I'll ask around. [There's a beat.] There's probably a lot to do, but I was really busy back home and need to get back soon. Is that selfish? It's probably selfish but I've put a lot of work into our show so far and they can't finish it without me. I'm not even exaggerating, I mean they really can't.

I think a lot of people could ask the same.

[ She gives a nod. Not quite having time to answer the first part, but instead focusing on the rest for a moment. But it sort of distracts her at the word 'show'. Entertainment was banned, after all, the most the planets she came from had were news broadcasts. Akihabaster had some, sure, but not all the planets were free so she... kind of hesitates. ]

Mm. I understand. There's still plenty for me to do at home, too, but I guess if I got worked up about it... Well, it's not going to change anything. [ A beat. ] Can I ask if you mean like a live show?

....good point. [That phrasing seems to get him to snap out of it, and there's a very sheepish grin. Right. Freaking out won't help, duh, Ryan. So he just focuses on the questions and his enthusiasm picks up again, nodding in response.]

Yeah! Yeah, we're putting together a musical back home. We have a few weeks left before the actual show but we're still trying to get everything perfect. It's a lot of fun though. It's our last show together so it's kind of special. [Not to mention Juilliard, but that's neither here nor there.]

[ At least that seemed to work. Panic really wasn't going to do help them in a situation like this and the least that could be done was make it easier. A faint smiled played on her lips and she shook her head. ]

So people can do things like that where you're from, huh?

[The question definitely strikes him as odd but he doesn't really make a big deal out of it. There's a quizzical little smile that follows though. ]

Yeah. Our school's pretty big on the performing arts now more than ever. Why?

That sounds nice. [ She gives a shake of her head. She knew this world was different, so it wasn't that strange. Where I come from there's a universal ban on entertainment ]. Some planets are lenient, but most have strict ones. The planet I was born on was like that.

[He hears the words and he gets what she's saying, but it's still hard to believe.] Wait what do you mean? How can they do something like that? What harm has entertainment ever done?

Mm, it's hard to explain. A long time ago there was a war on Earth. It left the planet uninhabitable and so when everyone left they decided to ban entertainment. They feared it would sway people's hearts. But it doesn't, if anything music makes people stronger.

[ which is still swaying hearts, but viva la music. ]

[That is probably the saddest thing he's ever heard.] Of course music makes people stronger. Music is...I mean music brings people together. [He should know, speaking from experience.] I think a world without music would probably be the worst kind of world to live in. Don't they realize that music is the most universal language there is?

...if there's no entertainment in your Earth, what do you do instead?

[ It is pretty sad, yes. But she kind of nods at that. That's what music's always done, after all. Even for her. Music was what saved her and led her to her dreams. Though she kind of has to grin a bit at that, amused. ]

Who says there's no entertainment? [ Her tone's light. ] AKB0048 still exists. We travel bringing our song to people, even the ones with an entertainment ban.

...wait what? [Hold it. Give him a second to wrack his brain for why that sounds familiar and subconsciously he starts humming a few bars from Heavy Rotation. It's not a song he knows by heart nor is it a song he plays a lot, but he recognizes it in passing as something he's studied on his own. While his iPod is usually filled with showtunes and pop/dance music, he's started to branch out a little and check out what else is out there.] You travel. Like...to different parts of Earth or different planets?

[Oh. She wasn't actually expecting to hear the familiar tune. It's easy to go along with the soft words of 'I want you! I need you! I love you' but the older teen continued on. The small amused smile stays in tune, but she nods.]

Not Earth. Like I said, Earth really isn't inhabitable anymore. Everyone left a while ago. AKB48 were the idols you went to see, so AKB0048 became the idols that came to see you.

Okay well my Earth is still pretty livable. [So don't scare him like that.] So basically what you're telling me is that you're like a famous outlaw.

Mm, but that's still weird for me to hear. [ Growing up on desert planets and all. ] Maybe to DES. To our fans we're idols who come to sing and show our love.

It's all about the fans, right? [He grins, though Kanata probably has no idea what he's actually thinking about.

'I want the world, nothing less, all the glam and the press only giving me the best reviews...] What's DES?

That's right. As idols we want to share our love with the fans.

[ And it's true. They did handshake events and practiced combat to make sure their fans stayed safe at their concerts. If it wasn't for their fans no one in AKB0048 would be where they were at. ]

They're a military group for D.T.G.O. . They try to enforce the entertainment ban and usually attack our concerts. [ so... matter of fact. ]

...usually. [Kanata what.] How do they even keep finding you? Why do they keep attacking you if it doesn't work? [...Kanata what?]

They find out about our concerts. 0048 concerts aren't small, it's practically a planetwide affair. Sometimes we announce where we're performing since it's a once-in-a-life time event for people, other times we're asked. [ But she shakes her head. ] They won't stop thinking entertainment is dangerous.

Planetwide affair...[See? That's the kind of audience he wants to perform for one day. But he knows that what she's actually saying is more important, so he pulls himself out of his daydreams.]

This might sound crazy, but have you ever thought about just inviting them to one of your concerts so they can see you guys are harmless without trying to destroy everything?

It's not that simple.

[ She says it simply, with a shake of her head. It's difficult to explain kiraras and the like or the power the hold. How that kiraras respond to idols and so they fear the power they could have over everyone else, how it was the power that trigger the kiraras that caused the war that ended earth. ]

They think we're dangerous. Even when we show that all we want to do is sing and don't fight back, they'll still attack. A little while ago we convinced DES not to attack but... nothing's changed at all. They're still doing the same thing.

[That is completely unacceptable. But then again, Ryan's from a world where singing literally solves problems. Hearing that singing causes more problems still blows his mind and his expression shows it.]

There's gotta be a way to convince them. [A beat.] Have your concerts ever actually caused an uproar like they've been worried about?

The time we convinced them not to attack was also the one time I know of... They had attacked our home planet of Akihabastar. We had to retreat and left the citizens defenseless, so DES took over and caused them a lot of pain. When we came back the people of Akihabaster hated us, but we wanted to believe in them. We performed and they remembered why they loved music... None of them did anything to hurt anyone, but DES did what it always does.

I still don't understand why music would ever hold the blame. [But then again, it sounds logical when she explains it that way.]

Well! At least you don't have to worry about that here, right?

Mm, here we could bring our song to everyone without any trouble.
