Morning.
[ It's about the gruffest 'good morning' anyone may get around here. John's standing in the bailey, near Thranduil's tent. He's still wearing his black uniform, but instead of his assault rifle, there's a warhammer strapped to his back. When in Rome, right?
Also, his assault rifle modifications are just a little too high-tech to work. ]
My name is Staff Sergeant John Grimm of the United States Marine Corps. That might not mean anything to you, depending on where you're from, but it means I'm a soldier. A lot of you have gone out to help fight the worms, and that's good -- we need that. But we need people here to protect the injured and the civilians, too.
I'm recruiting people who can fight to work alongside the existing guards and help defend Caer Glaem in the event that one or more of those worms shows up. [ Or something else, if their luck decides to plummet. ] If you aren't armed, we'll get you something to use out of the armory.
This isn't a permanent position; I'm sure as hell not in charge around here. But it's an important one.

[ "People like us." He may not be a-- witch or warlock or wizard, whatever, but she's still right. ]
You know, they didn't actually do that much in America. Hung them, sure, or crushed them under rocks, but a lot less burning.

[ None of them are particularly pleasant ways to go. ]
Honestly? Not sure being burned at the stake or something similar wouldn't be waiting for me back home, if I hadn't followed the damn things.

[ Pause. ]
Not much choice between here and home, then. I feel the same, a bit. Home's home but... Yeah, reckon it's no less difficult when you think about it. Sorry. For what it's worth.

[ A shrug. ]
It was worth it.

Yeah. Bloody hell, yeah. Thanks. I think we'll be alright, we're a resilient lot.

You back yet?
[ Hence the subject change. ]

Still not sure what I'm doing, but that's why I've got you, right?

[ But he smiles a little. Kids. ]
Right.

[ SHE CAN DREAM HE'D SEE HER.
And when she gets her broom as a boon, well then.]Would definitely help in getting a vantage point on Caer Glaem. Where d'you reckon we have to build up defenses? Anywhere could be vulnerable.

[ So, you know. Prove it. c: ]
Thranduil has some sort of magic barrier up, but it doesn't reach the battlements and doesn't go to the underground lake.

[ Pause. ]
Thranduil. He's a king, right? He's got magic, too?
no subject
[ Which in his mind completely explains the magic thing. ]

You can switch it up.

[ pun unintended ]

I can do that, too. [ JOKES: ] You've got one more wish.

Maybe I'll hold onto that one.
