[Sigrid is looking fairly haggard and pale. Behind her is the rugged green wilderness surrounding the Station, though the Station itself is not in sight.]

I'm in the middle of nowhere at all and I've got a bad leg. I couldn't find my locket and I had to ask a thrush to find it for me. A thrush. I'm talking to thrushes and they answer me. Anyway I need help. The thrush said he'd go and find someone, but I don't know who he meant. Does anyone know if thrushes are wise birds or silly birds? If he brings back a bear or something, I've got to hide now.

He didn't talk. He sounded like birds always sound. He understood me, and I understood him.

Oh. That's... Huh.

[STUMPED FACE.]

And I take it you've never been able to understand them before...? I mean, that seems like the sort of skill you'd take notice of pretty early.

I...well...

[This is starting to feel really weird, as she's going back through memories she's been ignoring.]

Sometimes. I thought my ears were playing tricks on me.

[Well then. Not quite what he was expecting, but. He'll roll with it?]

Buuuut you don't think that now. [While it's a statement, there's a faint question in his expression, looking to make sure he's got that right.] I guess being in a fairy world makes things like that easier to accept.

Well, he was talking to me. He asked if I was all right, and usually when someone asks you that and no one else is around, it means they're talking to you and expect an answer, so it was hard to deny.

Yeah, but someone isn't a bird in most cases.

[Scratching his head, he starts to wonder if this conversation has veered off the path of being helpful.]

Sorry. I guess I don't exactly know where I'm going with this anymore. It's just, uh. I haven't exactly heard about anyone else here talking to animals, so.

[A steel edge glints in her eyes.] So all you're doing now is gawking?

No-- No!

[Shaking his head quickly, adamantly denying.]

I was just...trying to help? But it didn't really work very well, I guess. Er, sorry about that.

[He reminds her increasingly of Bain. Quiet, gangly, and wide-eyed. Maybe he was just trying to be helpful in the most awkward, ill-conceived way. Which, all things considered, is better than most boys his age accomplish.]

It's all right, so long as you meant well. And the Elves talk to animals. They don't think I'm so strange.

I totally meant well.

[He's quick to say it, but there's still a worried look on his face, like he's sure she's going to doubt his sincerity there.]

The Elves? I didn't know there were Elves. [But, given it's a fairy world... he should have guessed Elves would be a thing.] Well, no, if that's something normal for them, it makes sense.

[A beat.]

...Has the thrush come back with anyone yet?

He's coming with the Elvenking. [Sigrid hesitates.] King Thranduil. Sorry. We only call him the Elvenking back home.

Oh. Oh, okay.

[There are elves and elf kings??? Man, he is really behind here.]

And...he'll help you find your way back, right? You're not still going to be stranded?

[Definitely like Bain. She offers a humorless smile.]

I'll be fine. It'll be less than a quarter of an hour till he's here, I reckon.

Good. That's not too bad, then.

[He hesitant pause.]

Do you, uh. I mean. Do you want me to keep you company while you wait? We can keep talking so you're not just sitting there in the middle of nowhere. ...If you want.

...I'd like that. [She swallows.] You're very kind. What's your name?

[He smiles, albeit rather sheepishly at her compliment.]

It's Hiccup. And yours is...?

Sigrid. [Wee bitty smile. Not gonna comment on his name. Sounds like someone gave it to him as a cruel joke, and that's not funny.]

Nice to meet you, Sigrid.

[Smiling wider now. He totally appreciates the lack of comment on his name--he gets that way too much.]

...Even if it's not in the best circumstances for one of us.

I don't think there's a bad circumstance to meet a friend in.

[He falters at that, but then a broad smile creeps across his lips.]

I like that. That's a good way to think.
