[ Hello, Seelie friends! Have a young man with spiky black hair, bright blue eyes, and a scar on his cheek. He has a book in his hand (surprise, surprise) and a thoughtful look on his face.

He's taking a small break from all of the war preparations, and he has some questions for you all. ]

Hi, everyone. I know this has been a really busy month for all of us, so I won't take up too much time.

I was doing a little reading on this world's magic, and I'm interested in learning more about elemental magic here, particularly earth magic -- or earth-bending as I've heard some people call it.

If you can help me out, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

[ Mount Verla, the Void -- not very happy business, all things considered. ]

I can't use my fire magic either, right now, so I'm trying to branch out a bit.

How much runic magic do you know?

My lover taught me his runes before he left. [She pauses.] I've been meanin' to branch out into this world's runic magic, but unfortunately I haven't had th' time. One thing or another kept comin' up.

[ They are on the same page, there. ]

Runes from his own world you mean? [ A beat- ] I've been doing some reading on basic runic magic for this world, and the general concept is very similar to what we have back home.

[ He flashes his armband briefly -- there are several, lightly glowing "marbles" inserted in the slots. ]

We use materia instead of runes.

[She draws a tracking rune in the air, making it flare to life and hover over her palm without anywhere to go before she draws the power back from it. The rune drops into her hand and Merida holds it up, showing the Berkano symbol to him.]

Trackin' rune. Comes in handy with criminals an' whatever else you want to track.

[She tilts her head, eyeing the marbles with a bit of curiosity before she raises an eyebrow.]

Materia? An' it lets you use magic?

Huh.

[ Interest piqued, Zack looks at the rune. ]

That does seem pretty useful!

[ As for the Materia, one of them flares, and ice forms in the palm of his hand. ]

Mm. They occur in nature back home. Like with runes, you can cast different spells depending on what they are.

[ The glow fades, and the ice recedes. ]

I have a handful of them here with me, but like I said- my fire materia isn't working.

There are others of course. I use speed an' lightenin' runes to run faster, an' up until we lost Mount Verla, I kept my clothing warm in winter with a heatin' rune.

[The ice makes her eyebrows shoot up, thoroughly impressed. She hasn't advanced that far with her ice magic at the moment so she doesn't mention it; for now she just nods.]

My fire runes don't work anymore either. Maybe your materia will work after you learn how to use your shard. I heard that those who were able to use fire magic in their world can do so after a certain level is reached. [She purses her lips together, tilting her head in thought.] I'm not sure if the same will happen through a conduit though.

[ Zack hums softly. ]

It sounds like magic here is pretty flexible with what you can do with it.

[ As long as you have the right combination, that is. Zack's understanding of it all is still limited, even though he's making some progress. Intricate spellwork really isn't his thing; he would rather keep things simple. ]

I've learned how to activate my shard, but yeah, I'm...not sure if it'll work after I progress a little more or not.

[ Granted, he's not even sure how much time this world has left so it's hard to say if he'll even get the opportunity. ]

I don't think there's enough time for me to become and expert at anything. I'm just trying to get a handle on the basics right now.
