For anyone who doesn't know me, my name's Steve Rogers. I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to meet many of you at the feast. Things came up, but I at least wanted to introduce myself.

[For reasons, curiosity. Maybe he's a limited edition but he's definitely not one of a kind.]

I also wanted to talk about something else. Some of you might remember Sam Wilson - in fact, if you ever met him, I'm willing to bet that you do. Sam served two tours in the military, so he could definitely hold his own in a fight. But what he really loved to do was help people. My entire world had turned its back on me, and Sam took me in, made me bacon and eggs. That's the kind of friend I hope to be to anyone who'd call me one.

[Emphasis on 'anyone'.]

Sam's gone now, but he started working on something before he left. It's a clinic, he called it The Nest. There's some medicine and stuff there, but it was more than that. It was a place for people to come if they just needed to talk, or if they needed to rest. I never realized it before, but sometimes in a war people need that as much as they need bandaging up.

[Steve pauses there to take deep breath. Here comes the hard part.]

This is my friend's legacy, and I've tried to keep it afloat. The problem is, I don't know how. And it's hard for me to ask for help sometimes.

[He can barely even maintain eye contact. But the same thing keeps going through his head, fuels him on: for Sam.]

But if you have anything to offer...if you have medical knowledge or if you're just a good listener, even if you want somewhere else to stay. There's a place for you here.

[The name is slightly familiar to him, mentioned by someone else. Steve hasn't met Xavier himself. But judging by Bobby's words, he likes him already.

But Steve has met a couple of mutants, and his expression softens when the younger man talks about the prejudice he faces back in his own world.]

Yeah, I've heard about that. It' a shame, but I don't think you'll have as much of a problem with that here.

Can I ask about yours?

My powers? [Did he leave out the part where he's Iceman? Aw, man, he left out the part where he's Iceman! It really doesn't leave much to the imagination.]

My codename is Iceman. Does that help?

[Steve snorts a little. You might've left it out, Bobby, but Steve thinks you're funny anyway.]

I think that's something of a dead giveaway. I guess you know about my team.

It's kinda hard to not know about the Avengers. Who's on your team?

Tony, Thor, Doctor Banner, Natasha, Barton.

[Maybe he should've gone with the codenames, they sound cooler.]

Are there any mutants on your Avengers?

A few. Some bad, some good. The good is Scott's brother ... Scott's my leader. ["He yelled at you once." Of course, it's not him, right?] The bad is this woman named Wanda. Scarlet Witch. She, uh, used to be our enemy? [And then there was whatever Jean had heard in her mind. He's obviously not comfortable with it all.]

But we mostly stick to our own thing.

What happened?

We went to the future and everything changed, and like—everyone says that they can't tell us what happened, but obviously a thing happened! How can you tell us that we can't know what happened when we can see a lot of crap happened!

[Breathe, Bobby. Breathe. He looks so fussed.]

Uh, so ... I don't know.

Easy, Bobby.

[Steve says it softly, a touch of sympathy in his eyes. From the tumble of words to the look on his face, Bobby's obviously upset.]

You say you went to the future. Then it can't be set in stone.

It ... kinda is? [He shrugs helplessly.] It's like we're from a different ... whatchamacallit instead of a normal thing. Warren completely changed himself! He's gonna have permanent helmet hair with that weird black crap up his neck.

[This makes no sense to a stranger, but that hasn't occurred to him yet.]

[Steve tries to follow along anyway. He decides to let it go for now and takes a deep breath instead.]

What makes you think you can't change it? And what do you mean by whatchamacallit?

... Does timeline sound right? It's not a different universe, but it's not the same universe, either, because, you know, stuff. [Like him coming to terms with his sexuality at all. Nooooot that he'd tell that to Steve Rogers. Ever. Does Captain America even have opinions on that? Well, Bobby does not want to know.]

I'm not sure I follow. [But he is trying, the look on Steve's face says it.] How can it both not different and not the same?

[And he has like three husbands and is rumored to hold Johnny Storm's butt, the concept probably isn't that far from him.]

[He waves his hands around aimlessly before he finally shrugs, making it clear that he doesn't have an idea.]

If I've changed, if Warren's changed, then everything's gotta change, right? But it hasn't, and I've been to a different world! That me was definitely not me.

I mean, baseball caps are totally lame!

[There's something missing, something that might make the whole thing make sense. But it's obvious that Bobby doesn't know what it is, and as much as Steve wants to help, it's impossible for him to know too.

At least it's not something he has to worry about immediately now that he's here, if that can be seen as an advantage.

Steve draws a breath.]

But you do like baseball, right?

—Sure, sure. [That caught him off guard a bit.] Buuuut I don't really know about the teams now.
