VISUAL ; SEELIE LOCKED.
[ when the visual feed starts, there’s a bright green snout poking at the locket, and korra’s voice can be heard in the background — soft, encouraging. “it’s how we keep in contact, rizhao,” she says. satisfied, the dragon slithers away to mako — currently sitting on the floor with a conspicuous collection of bowls of black powder, paper tubes, and clay — and climbs right on top of him, all thirty feet of her piled on his shoulders, looped under his arms, and all over his lap. the locket swings around, catching a glimpse of one asami sato at a carved wooden table, looking over some small parts that look like clockwork gears with a hand to her chin. she seems Very Interested in what she’s doing, so we’ll leave her alone for now and get to the focus of what this post is really about:
korra comes into view, fixing the angle of the locket before setting it down. she’s about to start talking when a great white head comes into view, and naga drops herself down next to korra, chin on the girl’s lap. as korra relaxes, she begins to address the network, ]
I hope everyone’s feeling better — did anyone find out what caused that silver stuff to spread? How it got started? There seemed to be a lot of different cures, but…
[ that’s not really what she wanted to talk about, so she lets that thought drift off, leaning back and drawing her hand between naga’s ears for a second before she continues. ]
We’ve got a lot of new people, don’t we. [ and she doesn’t seem happy about that, oh no. ] My name is Korra, you can find me out on the Western Road if you ever need to travel to Redgate or the University — but you don’t wanna go to Daonna, trust me. You’re more likely to end up dead than actually accomplishing anything.
[ she’s really no good at this, this talking off-the-cuff thing. maybe she should’ve written this all down beforehand… ]
Look, I don’t know how much everyone else has been told, but I do know that Queen Solais isn’t in the sharing type when it comes to what the Seelie court’s objective is. Sure, they say it’s “justice and the order of nature,” but I think it’s important that everyone knows what that means. No dancing around the subject, no ducking the harsh reality.
There’s a Void out there and it’s eating away at the world — all worlds. It signals the end of everything that we know, and it’s our job as Seelie shardholders to let it run its course. [ she adds quickly, trying to be reassuring; ] I know that sounds scary. No one likes thinking about the “end,” no matter what the “end” is, but it’s important to realize that everything has an end, just as everything has a beginning.
[ she takes in a breath and sits up straighter. korra reeeeally hates talking about all this philosophical mumbo-jumbo, so the fact that she’s even trying speaks volumes about how important she feels this is. ]
My teachers taught me that everything comes in cycles. Spring to summer, to fall, to winter; old years to new. Even an Avatar’s life isn’t forever — we have to protect ourselves and our Avatar spirit so that the next Avatar can balance and change the world as they see fit.
This Void — it’s not the end of everything, it’s just the end of this cycle, and it’s important that we keep it intact. From this end, new worlds will form; maybe even our own worlds again. I don’t know how many worlds are familiar with ‘reincarnation,’ but where I’m from, it’s real, and I believe the worlds eaten by the Void will come back. Maybe in different forms, maybe the same. It’s important to remember that this is something that will benefit every world that we come from.
[ her fingers curl at naga’s crown, and the polar beardog lets out a soft whine at korra’s sudden tensing. tipping her big head back, naga licks at korra’s face, and korra rests a hand against her dog’s cheek. ]
The Unseelie don’t see it that way. The court’s main objective is killing every Seelie from every world, regardless of whether they can stop the Void or not. They think all life is precious except for those who disagree with them. [ there’s venom seeping into korra’s voice at that, and it’s clear exactly how she feels about the unseelie ideals. ] I heard from someone in the Unseelie court just what they planned on doing, so if you know anyone in the Unseelie court, that won’t protect you. If they win, you’re dead, and that’s it, that’s the end. No chance of you being reborn in your world again because if the cycle doesn’t continue, I believe that every world will eventually die. [ korra has no way of proving this, but this is what she fears. if the unseelie win and interrupt the cycle, if the natural order gets corrupted, then what happens? do things just peter out? or does everything go on to become stagnant. ] Change can bring about balance or it can destroy everything we believe in and want to protect. Change is good, and sometimes, change is necessary — but not like this.
A lot of the Unseelie are probably scared of the Void, and I’d believe that some of the Seelie are, too. [ korra is, though she won’t admit that. ] I know the natives are. Some kill shardbearers, a lot of them are in Daonna. They’re scared of the Void and scared of us, so if you meet any Drabwurld natives, please don’t give them a reason to hurt you. Some of them will still try and you should defend yourselves against them… but a lot of them just want to live their lives as peacefully as they can in spite of the war going on around them.
[ silence falls between her and naga, and in the background, the dragon picks up her head and trills softly in korra’s direction; a gentle whalesong. ]
I think I flapped my gums enough, but if anyone has questions, I’ll answer them.

Wait, so, the Unseelie wanna destroy the Void? How do they know that'll save everything?

Well, if we're here to let the Void run its natural course... [ She pauses again, clearly way too deep into this. ] it just seems like the Unseelie want the opposite. But then again, I haven't been here long enough. [ Or really understands this fight to begin with. If there even is a fight. ]
All I've been told is we just don't interact with them. Which... kinda defeats the purpose, doesn't it? Can't we like, just form a peace? Treaty thing? Sorta?
no subject
[ He shrugs, rolling his eyes. ]
We were brought here to fight a war, but they don't really tell us much of anything about this war. Korra telling us all of this is actually really helpful, 'cause I only even knew what I did before this from talking to, like, everyone.
[ Making a thoughtful sound, Dick thumbs at his lip as he goes on. ]
It's not like I really have a solid stance either. It hasn't even been a month since I got here, but I'm just sorta... I dunno. I want to meet some Unseelie, talk to them, figure out what they're thinking.
[ ...Maybe he shouldn't have admitted that on the locket. ]
no subject
Kamala shakes her head, trying to get the strands out of the way. ] I think you and I got here around the same time then, cause it's only been a while for me too. But really, a war? I'm sixteen! I'm like, the least qualified person ever to fight a war.
[ Her powers don't really count here. ]
no subject
Hey, there's gotta be something. I'm fourteen, and I'm here too! There's something about you...
[ HE'S TEASING. but his smirky grin drops a bit to something softer and more encouraging. ]
No, but all joking aside, I definitely agree with you. Just like not all of us Seelie are agreeing with the cause, there might be Unseelie who don't agree with theirs. I'd want to talk to them... And also people who do agree, cause I want their impressions on this war we got tossed into. I dunno... Herc was talking about cycles and his experience with them. It's something I keep thinking about.
no subject
Like world cycles? The idea of everything rebuilding itself? I mean, I can kind of agree with it because what everyone's said made sense to me, even if it just sounds.... weird. [ She pauses, shrugging. ] We're not all from the same world anyway, so if this place rebuilds, I wouldn't be too upset. It's not like there's anyone keeping me around.
[ Almost immediately, she realizes maybe that sounds a little too dramatic for her. ]
But if it was like, my own world, I'd kinda want to defend it. I mean, I do defend it. [ Kind of. ] It would help if there's an Unseelie around. D'you think it'd be weird if I just went up to one and interviewed them? Like, what are your thoughts on the world ending kind of thing? Maybe too cheesy?
no subject
No way! Not even gonna lie--I'm thinking about doing that too! Just trying to figure out how I might get away with it without getting shot. Uh, metaphorically.
[ And also kinda literally, especially since they're talking about this openly on the lockets and he's been warned about speaking against the Seelie Court on them. ]
I know how you feel, though. Defending my world, my home, and the people there-- It's what I do. I love doing it, and it's a big part of me.
I'm just worried that... Someone told me all our worlds are offshoots of this one, so if this one is destroyed, it's highly possible ours are next.

[ He kinda wanted to stay out of this, since people get so heated, but this is... important. ]
My understanding... and I could well be wrong... is this fight is in part to reform the great gem, the Uaine Cridhe from which our shards were a part. From which our worlds were made. Its power can either be used to allow an ending and rebirth, or... to simply stall the void for as long as possible. If it is allowed to be used by the Unseelie, nothing new will ever be born. It will be a selfish act, and this world will be the last. We will save those left alive a little while, nothing else. It is a simple choice, but a difficult one. To allow hope for something better, or to cling to what we have.
Re: voice; Threadjack;
[ He frowns, trying to figure out how to word what he means. ]
Why is destroying the world as it is now a better option? I'm just-- I'm trying to understand, here.
But that's kind of the impression I had before too, actually. That the Green Heart is what the war is about, and the Void is kind of a-- A catalyst, I guess? What no one seems to be able to agree on, though, is whether the Void should be considered a third party to the war, like, neither Seelie nor Unseelie, or if it's more of something to fight against vs alongside. If...that makes sense.

[ Aslan does not consider that selfish. It is why he was willing to aid the attempts to move Mount Verla. However - ]
This world will not last forever. With or without the presence of the Void, in time, it will reach the end of its lifespan.
Allaidh Darach is the center, the lynchpin of all other worlds. When that occurs, if there is no mechanism in place to bring about rebirth, all worlds and all life will cease to exist.

[ Two for you, Aslan, you go Aslan. ]
For myself... I do not believe any person to be good or evil, any action to be bad or good. They simply... are. A sword can be used for actions we perceive as good or evil, but it is inherently neither. Magic can be used for actions that hurt or heal, it itself it is neither.
I believe the void is the same.
It may be... as you say, a third party. I believe even the monarchs are not above the gods of this world, The Black Shuck or The White Hart. The void, I believe, is in a way the same -- a force to be opposed or believed in. Like any religion, there will be those who see differently. Like any action, there will be more than one viewpoint or side to a story. The choice to act one way or another is our own to make.
Re: audio; threadjackception
Obviously, I need a lot more information about the Void to know for sure, though, and I don't think anyone is certain of it. But... It's just something to keep in mind. I like your sword analogy.
[ He pauses, then adds as an aside: ]
Also, a face to a voice would be nice, if you don't mind?
[ But it's murmured, half to himself, especially since he'd already made the request to Aslan. There's probably a reason these two voices chose not to go with a visual and maybe... Maybe he shouldn't be pushing. Still, there's no harm in asking. ]

He waves the locket into changing, and it's a little unsteady as he tries to set it down somewhere because Lancelot is currently sitting on the ground. He's leaning back against a tree, a child curled up asleep in his lap with similarly dark curls and pale skin. He'd keep holding it but one hand is holding Bridei still. He'd rather have both hands for that, and he can't really rest it hanging around his neck now if Dick wants to see him. ]
Better?
[ ... It's hard to say if this is a serious question or not, Lancelot still seems calm and unbothered -- shifts a hand to stroke at the child's hair as it squirms in its sleep. ]
Re: Video; threadjackception

...And, uh, is it possible to go with a visual? I mean, if you'd rather not that's cool, but...
[ He likes to see who he's talking to. Especially considering how new everything and everyone here is. ]
audio -> visual;
This world will not last another thousand years, perhaps not even another century, and the approach of the Void is as much a sign of that as other things we have seen.
[ He says all this, and then, per Dick's request, the visual feature turns on. ]
Old age is part of life, for worlds as well as humanity. One may very well ask why, but it does not change the reality.
We can only choose according to the hand we have been dealt.
Re: audio -> visual;
Is that why we were brought here? I'm one of the said "new shardbearers", see, so I'm still trying to figure everything out. If the world won't last much longer, is it that the monarchs are trying to get the rest of the shards now, as soon as possible, before it gets any further?
Old age is a death that comes with peace, usually. It's how people hope to die, right? After a long and fruitful life. But I feel like if we support this--cause, I guess, it's like cutting short a life that hasn't fully lived. And okay, maybe the world is nearing the end of its lifespan, but I'm not. Other people aren't. And if this war is won and over before I'm old, that's cutting short the lives of me and everyone I love.

So... if we wanted to simplify it, it would be the difference between letting the world die a natural death, or prolonging the end?
[ she's no god and she's no spirit; she only hosts the divine. but she feels the weight of spiritual decisions squarely on her shoulders because back home she is looked to as a divine being. but even so, there's a decided human perception to her, and though she wants to look at the big picture because it's what expected, she has trouble with it.
so she asks her own questions, wanting to make sure she can understand both as a human host and as a spiritual leader.
encroaching death is terrifying, and for that reason she can't blame the unseelie shardbearers who fight solely to stay alive, not knowing what their court has further planned for everyone else. ]

So what, we're like the reason why things keep moving? The little hamster in the wheel that makes everything else function normally? Why is it such a bad thing to want it to keep going? I mean, back home - like where I'm from, people make it such a big deal to try and save the environment. Isn't it like that here?
[ That's a terrible analogy, but it's how Kamala understands it. ]

Because of that, all worlds are tied to its existence, and whatever happens here will determine the fate of all others.
If the Void is allowed to consume this world and run its course, then worlds will not only be born but reborn. If it is destroyed, when this world reaches the end of its lifespan, all others will inevitably fade into nothingness, never to return again.
