And I was meant to live forever in my uncle's court, doing his bidding. Maybe I'm foolish, but I don't—I have to pretend, at the very least pretend, that something is possible.

I never said I didn't think it's possible, just that we have quite a lot stacked against us. Someone out there certainly thinks it's better if we lose.

How? [ She's demanding, but it's more of a very general question rather than one that demands a real answer out of Loki. ] How could anyone think letting that Void devour everything, little by little, is better? How are we only few who see it?

That was more of a dramatic lead-up. You know, then I ask you to head off on a brilliant adventure with me to find the answer.

[ on the other hand, katsa doesn't look satisfied at all. ]

Well, I don't expect there's any answer that makes sense.

I suppose we'll know when we find out. Everyone always wants something.

And what is it that you want?

[ nosy. perfect opportunity to ask that question. "we'll know when we find out" is too irritatingly vague, so there's something else to wonder about instead. ]

[ he leans into the locket a bit, like it might be a secret. for once, he's actually honest. ]

To be able to change without the possibility that fate will take it from me.

[ it's so perfectly phrased, so well stated, that katsa wonders whether he's somehow read her mind. she's startled, and she takes a moment to repeat the words to herself.

she wants the same. perhaps she's misunderstood him. ]

Change—how, or what? Anything?

To be better, perhaps. To not be as the universe would dictate.

[ to be contrary, maybe. his mother had wanted the Loki who was the villain again, and she argued it was better for Asgardia. it was just damnation for him. ]

To be myself, whatever that may mean for the future.

...I want that, too. Exactly that.

All I want is to know that a future exists at all, and after that no one can say what it will be.

You should know I'm all for adventuring. From what I can tell, that's what we've been doing since we arrived.
