This wolf is enormous.

[ Katsa can be heard before she's seen, her locket instead in the face of a fully-grown direwolf that's shoving his nose in front of it in her hands. She pushes him out of the way, backs up so that she can be seen in scale with the direwolf: her blue and green eyes are overbright, red-rimmed as though she's been crying, but her voice when she speaks is loud and demanding. ]

What potions or tonics would turn dark hair blue?

No I mean why blue specifically? There's a ton of other colors.

I know someone who did it once to his own hair, trying to make a tonic that cured headaches when rubbed into the scalp. His hair was positively blue for months. It's just what I thought of first.

[Give him a moment to look at the direwolf again. That's one of the things about Hiro; his approach to most things tends to be a little different than everybody else.]

Blue's a good color but unless it's a bright blue it won't make a huge difference. And if you're doing it just because it's something you're doing, shouldn't it be something other people can see?

It's not so much about how it is to other people. Though Morla may have a few things to say, if she sees one of her old wolves blue.

[ katsa scowls. that's a good thing: she doesn't want to feel that her life is beholden to morla, and somehow turning liam blue feels like a statement against that, as little sense as it may make to anyone else. ]

Morla. The queen? [Whoa, okay Katsa, Hiro's all for doing what you wanna do and what-have-you, but are you sure you should be messing with the queen?]

Better question. Did you ask the wolf how he feels about turning blue? Maybe he has a preference. [Is he kidding, is he serious, is he holding out on blueprints for something to interpret animal-speak who even knows.]

Do you know any other Morla?

[ messing with monarchs is what katsa does best man. she turns to look at liam, who sighs as a wolf can, and flops back on his overly large haunches. that's enough of an answer for her. katsa shrugs. ]

He hasn't told me by now if he'd rather another.

I don't know, there could maybe be another Morla here. [Just a look. He just arrived a few days ago Katsa who even knows. People have weird names here. He's studying the wolf again, drumming his fingers on the tabletop that he's sitting at.]

Do they even make bleach around here? That's the first thing you're gonna have to do if you want the color to stay.

[ she waves off his look. get with the program, hiro X( ]

There's someone else who helped me find a recipe. Honey and vinegar, and a few other things I can swipe easy enough from the kitchen. And I know the look of an indigo plant, though I've no idea yet where to find it. Do you know how? Have you dyed hair like this before?

[Excuse him, Katsa, he's been a little busy being dropped into a war 8|]

I don't know where to find an indigo plant around here because I haven't looked, but my aunt's dyed her hair before. [Ages and ages ago, but how hard can it be? Plus GoGo has bits of purple in her hair and it's really not that hard to figure out.] You really think there's going to be an indigo plant still growing when it's the winter?

[ that's... a good point. that gives her some pause. ]

Aren't there some plants that grow in winter?

Yeah but indigo's not one of them as far as I know. [He's studied biology, but botany's a whole other ballpark.]

We're in a world of magic. Maybe there's an apothecary or something? Do those exist here?

This world's not completely without useful things. They've medicines and herbs enough, though—[ katsa snorts. it's almost a laugh! ] I was hoping it would be easier, and someone would have something much more convenient.

I think you might be asking for too much. [How about an awkward little grin? Because Hiro's still super out of place here and he's only going off of what he thinks makes sense.] Science is rarely easy even in a place where common transportation is via horse.

I'm gonna guess waiting 'til the spring isn't an option?

What's wrong with transportation by horse? Besides that most people ride maddeningly slow.

One would think in a world in which men turn into animals and wield flames with their fingertips, turning hair blue would be no problem. There's no point in waiting until spring.

There's that but horses aren't exactly the most reliable mode of transportation either. [Horses have minds of their own. Trolleys, cars, motorbikes and robots don't.]

You could always ask somebody if they have a spell for turning things different colors. [Sarcastic? Not sarcastic? Who knows. He's racking his brain though and suddenly he sits up a little taller to face Katsa in the locket.] What about woad? I'm pretty sure it grows in the winter and if you could find it here it could work like indigo. It's not as strong but it's usable.

They're the most reliable. Far more so than magic, anyway, at least as long as you've any idea how to ride.

A spell would make things easier, but no one's offered anything of the kind yet. [ honestly she was hoping someone would. ] I'll use it, but what does woad look like? I'm no better at botany than I am at sewing.

Well there you go. If you know how to ride. [A little put out by that, maybe, but if he can find another way to get around why bother learning?]

Maybe you're not asking the right question. What would you give somebody who could turn a wolf blue? [But until that magical person comes...] They're kinda tall-ish with yellow flowers? I'm pretty sure it's just a weed. Sorry.

What would I give? ...What would that person want? [ katsa lowers her hand and peers suspiciously at hiro ] Other than riding lessons, perhaps.

[...wait.] Whoa, wait a minute! I don't know anything about magic. [But he does know a little about plants and if he really felt ambitious enough he could probably find something useful. There is that.]

Let's say you hypothetically found someone else. What could you offer? You have skills don't you?

Hm. [ okay, fine, so he doesn't mean himself. she settles back. ] I have skills. But is it even worth it if I could do it on my own anyway? Unless it were done quickly beforehand, in which case I could consider... Knife or bow lessons, or a guard on the road...

This is getting too complicated for the simple matter of changing his fur.

[And finally Katsa sees his point.] Unless you know somebody who can wave a magic wand and say "make it blue" then you might be stuck waiting a few days.

[...Hiro. Hiro no. Hiro don't offer things.] Maybe I can look around for you. In exchange for something later down the line. I don't know how fast I'd find plants but everybody seems to think we have a few days.

...All right. Though I can't promise that I'll give you what you ask, depending what it is, but I'd be willing to think about it. How do you plan to search?

Outside. [Hiro. Real answer, don't be sarcastic.] I'll think of something, there are a few places I can probably check out in the next day or two.

[He doesn't know when the battle's going to hit, but he's cramming in as much exploration and research as he can before then. Finding Katsa a plant? It'll slide right into that...assuming woad is actually available in Drabwurld. That part he'll have to check out.]

It doesn't need to be much. I'll probably just do something about his face or legs in the end, and if I find anything first.
