I wish to learn more of the magic of your worlds, of this world. Not only how it works but how to use it.

I would know your use of the knowledge you obtain.

That would depend on the knowledge. I can hardly make plans when I do not know what I might learn.

[ Aragorn is probably not going to be soothed by the fact that the Outsider has all black eyes, is incredibly gaunt and pale, or has a fairly monotonous voice that somehow still manages to sound judgmental at least half the time. Whoops. ]

I expect the learning will be more interesting than the magic itself.

Then speak imaginatively. {No, no he's not. He doesn't like judging by appearance, but come now.} War is upon this land. Magic could be useful in the hands of one side or the other.

Magic is in the hands of both sides already. Magic is in every breath of air you take in this world, every piece of earth beneath your feet. But battles bore me; I have no interest in watching humans hack at each other with swords nor in helping them do it.

[ Not until it threatens what's his, anyway. The Outsider does so dislike having to get involved, but he supposes it's a part of having friends. ]

I enjoy what I do not expect. I am familiar with the rules of magic in my world and not others, therefore I do not expect them, therefore I am interested and wish to know more.

You seek magic in a theoretical sense? {Well that's better, he supposes. Still there is something unsettling about this one.} I do not know much of magic. I was taught how to heal minor wounds by the Elves, but that requires herbs more often than not.

[ well the Outsider doesn't really need to breathe in general... ]

Ah, the Elves. They have told me some of their stories; quite interesting.

I was raised amongst them, but my skills do not match those of Lord Elrond who taught me.

He is one I have not met. But I have spoken to the elf prince Legolas and the lady Galadriel, as well as the singer Maglor.

Legolas is a dear friend, the Lady Galadriel has often guided me and Maglor is the reason I exist at all. {Distantly, that is.}

All of the same world, then. It is difficult to tell over these contraptions.

I do not resemble them. {Theirs is an otherworldly beauty.} I am one of the Dúnedain; not an Elf.

And what is a 'Dúnedain'?

They are Men who are descended from the Númenóreans. To put it simply, they are Men with longer lifespans.

{It's more complicated than that, but that's the gist of it. The Númenóreans are descended from the Houses of the Edain and Aragorn himself is actually a mixture of Elvish and Man.}

I see. How long of a lifespan?

[ let's play 20 questions ]

We live three times longer than normal Men. Normal Men live to be fifty or sixty, therefore we can live one-hundred and fifty or one-hundred and sixty years.

{Sure, why not?}

And why is that?

[ he loves his questions ]

Ilúvatar gave Men a Gift. Mortality is that Gift. However, after the Edain loved and learned from the Eldar, their lifespans were extended. {He pauses, adding:} The Edain are the Fathers of Men - Atanatári - and the Eldar are the Elves.

Ilúvatar? And if that is so, why is only one type of Man long-lived?

Think of Ilúvatar as a god. {The supreme god.} The Edain were divided into three Houses: Bëor, Haladin and Marach or Hador. Those who continued to marry and love the Eldar gave birth to children with longer lives whilst those who kept themselves separate lived shorter lives.

I see. And so you have some Elf blood in you, though you are not one yourself.

My ancestor, an Elf entire, chose mortality whereas his brother chose the Gift of the Elves. {Immortality.} I was reared by said brother until I came of age.

I imagine that may have been strange for that brother.
