[For a moment, Emil's face is very close to the locket. It moves around as he adjusts it - seeming to be propping it up on something - before he settles back. He's outside the castle, looking bright and cheery.]

Okay. Uhm, hi everyone. I'm putting this to both courts, since it's pretty important. I hope that's fine with everyone. It seems like it's okay that we all talk to each other and become friends, right? Anyway, I got rewarded by the court with Topo--

[Apparently Topo heard his name, because suddenly Emil has a massive wolf creature in his face, excitedly licking him.]

T-Topo! Hey! Stop that! [Topo is trying to bury his head into Emil, which keeps knocking him flat into the snow. Emil wraps his around Topo's neck, stroking his mane to try to pacify him.]

A-Anyway this is Topo, a Fenrir. I know he looks like a monster and, well, he is one but if you see him, please don't attack him. He's my friend. He's also really strong and would defend himself if you did...

[It might be hard to take seriously when the beast in question is making happy dog sounds as Emil pets it. But really, he just doesn't want Topo mauling someone or getting hurt himself.]

Oh! And since he's big and fast, if someone needs help getting somewhere or gets stuck, I don't mind helping out. I think that's all.

[He goes to shut off the locket when he remembers something, quickly picking up the locket.]

A-And! And can, uhm, can someone knit? My scarf was damaged. [THANKS HYDE.] Thank you.

How fast does your Topo go?

[Emil gets Topo to calm down and sit properly, smiling at the locket.]

Topo is one of the fastest monsters there is. I don't really know how far the other castle is from here. People said about a couple of months? But I'm sure Topo could clear that in a week. He'd have to stop to rest and eat. But he's big enough to carry a lot of supplies. [He strokes Topo's mane affectionately.]

Do you need to go somewhere, miss?

[a brilliant bit of luck then, if she can convince him of her purpose.]

I do, but not immediately. In a few days I'm going to set out to the city of Parrais, and while horseback is a fine means of travel, getting there sooner rather than later has its advantages.

What would I need to do to repay both you and him?

You don't need to repay me. [He smiles at her. It really isn't an issue for him at all.]

As for Topo... He eats a lot but he can hunt on his own, so we don't really have to worry. But if you can get him a specially treat, he'd really like it a lot! I always cook real meals for him when I can as a treat. It just has to have meat in it.

That won't be a problem at all, I'm sure. Does he have any particular likes and dislikes I should watch out for?

He likes meat and fish. I guess that's not surprising. But he likes spicy things, too, and he seems to like it when I add something tangy like lemon.

[she nods, and offscreen she makes a quick note to herself, because otherwise she's surely going to forget.]

--Lemon. If you're certain, then it will be done.

I didn't ask your name yet, however.

[He smiles. She's so nice.] Oh, I'm Emil. I don't know you though.

June May. I'm glad to meet you, Emil, and please don't worry about not knowing me. It hasn't been so long since I arrived here, after all.

[AN EXCITED CHILD BURSTS OUTSIDE THE CASTLE GROUNDS and he doesn't even fully have his winter coat on.]

You must introduce me to Topo straight-away! May I take a ride on him? I know we shall make fast friends, canines always love me!

[IT'S A PUPPY IT'S A GIANT WOLF PUPPY]

[Emil laughs and pets Topo, who bends his head down to sniff at Dorian curiously.]

Topo, this is Dorian. He's my friend. Dorian, this is Topo. He was one of the first monsters I made a pact with. But he's grown up a lot since then.

[Massive tail waving on the ground, Topo starts to lick at Dorian's arm happily.]

[Dorian laughs in delight at the licking.] You have a pact with him! Did you swear to be his good friend? And my, what a great big beast he has grown into! [Yes petting the Topo friends with a puppy YAY FINALLY BEING ALLOWED TO BEFRIEND DOGS]

I swore to protect him and fight by his side and take care of him, as long as he took care of me and protected me in turn. We'd fight together for the safety of the world.

[Topo keeps trying to bury his giant head in Dorian.]

He really likes you! I knew he would.

For the safety of the world? [It focuses all of his attention on Emil.] Are you on a quest? [a KNIGHT on a QUEST to SAVE THE WORLD this shit is real. story real.]

[ps topo he loves you and so there is endless patting and hugging of big wolf puppy]

That's right. We're going to save the world by waking up Ratatosk. Then he can fix all the problems with the mana flow and everything will be all right.

Oh! Is he like a sleeping king, whose health determines the health of the land?

[Oh, awkward...]

I, ah, I'm sorry for what happened... I don't know exactly how to apologise to you, but, I must even so.

Oh, uhm...

[Emil hesitates in petting Topo before leaning more towards the locket.]

No, I really need to say sorry, too. I didn't mean to hurt you. But I guess we have, uhm... similar problems. So I know it's not your fault.

[He smiles, vaguely.] Yes, it's really quite the problem at times, isn't it.

[But to say anything more, he had better lock the conversation.]

I'm sorry for the way he treated you, in particular. It's one thing to fight with someone who is willing, quite another to be unnecessarily cruel or to arbitrarily attack without provocation.

I-It's okay. It really took me by surprise, though. I was so worried I'd upset you.

[But it seems those worries were for nothing and relief washes over him. Now his curiosity gets the better of him.]

Uhm, I have a lot of questions though! Do you remember anything when it happens? Does he have a name? How did it happen? Sorry if that's a lot but I've never met anyone like me.

Not at all, I wonder much the same! Like yourself, I have never come across another who is two. Shall I start with the questions in order?

At the start, I was aware of everything he did, and recalled in detail. Now, I believe I am generally, if vaguely, aware of it in the moment, yet when I come to myself again, I recall very little. We are both Berserker. As a matter of distinction, our true names differ - he is Edward Hyde, I am Henry Jekyll. Jekyll was the original, Hyde was the result of a scientific experiment backfiring.

Wow... Some of it is a little different from me, the rest is the same though. Oh, uhm, right! In the same order.

I knew what was happening at first, kind of, but the more it's gone on the more I forget. Now I don't even know when it happens. We're both Emil, I think, at least he's never protested the name. Two people here call him Aster, though, and that's because we think...

[He frowns. He hasn't talked about this with anyone, about how he feels or what it's like, but it's safe with Berserker.] ...Well, we think he's someone named Aster, who was left for dead. And we think that I'm a personality based off a dying person he met in the Blood Purge. That's what we think anyway. He only came out, though, after I made a pact with Ratatosk, so he could be the spirit of the pact or something but... everyone says we look exactly like Aster, right down to a mark on my collarbone.

Very interesting, so you are at once the original as well as the double, depending solely upon perspective. If he was this Aster, it would explain his reasons for being quick to violence. One abandoned in that way could be forgiven for holding onto anger.

For how long has it been going on? May I ask also of 'the Blood Purge'?

What a curious beast.

[A predator, or prey? Prey animals will react badly to her, regardless of her intentions. But the look of it, it looks more predator.]

Fenrir was the son of Loki, and helped bring about the end of the world. Seems a strange that a species named so would have a friendly creature in it.

I really need to learn more about Norse mythology. It sounds like a lot of my world has it.

But well... [He pats the beast's mane gently, getting him to calm down.] Topo here used to be a wolf. He grew up into this. He's a monster by nature, so maybe that's how he could become a monster that everyone else knows.

That could be. Then one must ask how you tamed Topo.

[Such a strange name; but perhaps it has meaning in his world.]

Oh, I formed a pact with him. I can form pacts with monsters. It seems like it works here, too, or at least the pact magic does! I still haven't gotten anything to listen to me.

[Curious...]

It probably depends on your definition of monster.

[For some might consider her a monster.]

Well, that certainly is quite the creature.

[...he knows this kid's face, but not the personality. The personality was a bit...irascible, really, while this kid seems a bit hapless.

Maybe he was in a bad mood at the time...? He kind of wants to test the waters by having a normal conversation here.]

Nevertheless, I've noticed that beasts of various sorts seem to be fairly popular gifts, so I'd imagine it wouldn't result in terrible amounts of confusion, though perhaps we ought to clarify to the newcomers that Caer Glaem doubles as a zoo...

[Emil, like usual, remembers nothing that happened as his other side and instead just feels a bit bad for a different reason.]

I'm sorry. I promise Topo won't cause any trouble. He's actually well-trained and really useful! I was just worried someone might attack him... I didn't realise there were so many other animals.

[...okay maybe they're just twins then, because twins happen in Nasu very slightly more often than multiple personalities]

...ah, really, I'm more amused than anything. I'm not the biggest fan of animals, but I haven't really had any problems yet. ...and really, if there were all sorts of problems with the animals, I'm quite certain I would've heard about it by now.
