[The locket seems to be set up on a counter in a bedroom in the Station. To the side of the screen, there appears to be a small miniature ice sculpture of a pine tree, sparkling from the glow of the fireplace in the far background. Jack makes final adjustments in angling the locket just right to show off his crystal art project as well as his own smirking face.]

Alright, there's a whole ton of you out there that are either old and ancient or from some weird world that never got to know the cool Earth holidays, so lucky you — I'm here to provide you with a little Q&A on what Christmas is.

It doesn’t make any sense. It’s Father Christmas’s birthday but … not his birthday, too? Why is he giving out gifts for some other guy? [ OH, LOOK, one confused Viking is sitting on the bed. Hiccup gestures animatedly. ] Jack, your gods aren’t making any sense, even Loki’s more organised than this.

[The winter spirit rolls his eyes, waving a hand to hush the man behind him, keeping his attention on the locket instead of addressing him.]

The point is: you set up a ton of colorful lights around, you toss up a big tree to get sap all over your fingers, and then you find presents underneath it on the morning of the 25th. [That’s about the gist of it, right?] Look, I’m not big on bribing kids with gifts, but it does get people slacking off from all that serious crap so they can run outside and make a snowman or something. Gotta give it props for that.

So, basically, it’s Snoggletog without Thor. [ Flatly voiced from the peanut gallery. ] Boy, does that sound like a hoot.

No, no. [He finally turns his back to face Hiccup, shaking a pointed finger at him.] Don’t compare it to your aggressive “missing toes” Viking catastrophe of a holiday. [Turning back to the locket:] Just to be clear — mistletoe, that little plant that’s hung up everywhere on ceilings during the month, means you kiss the person you’re caught under it with — it’s not for punching them, as some people believe.

[ Wow, Hiccup’s just going to fold his arms right now. So rude. ]

I could always dredge up the will to punch you, if you’re getting tired of hanging out under mistletoe and suffering the other option.

[ No, he couldn’t. But he can say he might!! ]

Uh huh, sure. [With a momentary deadpan expression, Jack finally just shrugs with a sigh.] Anyway, I know the guy who hands out the presents, been in his secret lair in the North Pole and everything, so if you want to know more about elves — the small critter-like ones who don’t actually wrap the presents — or yetis, caroling and eggnog, whatever, I can fill in all the blanks for you.

[A pause before he adds:] Just do me a favor, be a pal, and run out to play in the snow for a bit, got it?

Excuse you, I am known for my incredibly artistic Snow Furies, Jack. Just because I don’t go prancing around yelling about how great winter is doesn’t mean I don’t know how to have fun.

First of all, I was talking to them, not you. Second, winter is great and I don’t think you understand how—

What's this about a punching tradition?

[ That sounds considerably more amusing than the other Christmas traditions she's familiar with. Do go on. ]

You hang up a missing toe and if two people cross underneath it, they get to punch each other in the face to dole out black eyes. [ OH, ASTRID. ] It's not ... the best tradition out there, truthfully. You probably shouldn't do it.

I suppose gathering up the toes would be a nuisance. I could always use imp toes, though.

[ IT SOUNDS LESS RIDICULOUS THAN THE HUMAN KISSING TRADITION...but then again it still screams dumb human tradition. ]

Yes. You are the good pal with the cat-puppy dragon. [ She's not even really paraphrasing. It came up. Mostly because she was interrogating Jack about humans/nonhumans and he mentioned a dragon, but. ]

I've never seen one, so I remembered the name. [ Hiccup. Cat-dragon. She doesn't care for the puppy part. Dogs are horrid. ]

Hah! I guess I am. You hear that, bud? You're a newly re-classified cat-puppy dragon.

[ As Toothless noses into view with a nuzzle at his boy's shoulder, Hiccup idly rubs under the Night Fury's chin. ]

This is Toothless and I'm Hiccup, just to introduce ourselves properly, miss.

You should take care to be less puppy. [ That's...directed entirely at Toothless. Sometimes Shijima will do this, just speak to animals instead of humans, as though it's perfectly normal. It is, to her. And she has to stare a little, since she really hasn't seen a dragon before.

It's interesting. His eyes look more a cat's. Like hers, when she doesn't blink and something flickers.

After a moment, she'll return her attention to the viking, though. ]

Shijima Kurookano. What does he eat?

Mostly fish. He doesn't like eels, they make him ill. Oh, sometimes he nibbles on a cooked chicken too.

[ Toothless croons lowly at the strange girl, tilting his head until Hiccup scratches behind an ear-fin and then the dragon is all about snuggling onto his rider's lap for more, a rumble rising like a purr. ]

Eel is okay. Fish is better. But why eat the chicken cooked?

[ raw is more palatable. Even in this form. ...Shijima's strange, and she just tilts her head, staring at the dragon again with catlike intensity. ]

He doesn't like raw meat if it isn't fish, dragons can get really picking about that sort of thing.

[ Unless they're the Red Death, or something. Then all bets are off. ]

Strange. That isn't catlike at all.

[ Or, well, not her version of it. But okay. ]

[He cringes a bit at the thought. He's avoided most of the war issues here, but back home he had to live watching plenty of them happen right in front of him. It's not exactly something he likes to think about it.]

Me personally? Well, my "gift" is usually the flurries of snow for people to have a little fun in. I'm no Santa Claus to be giving actual presents.

[He pauses with a thought.] But sometimes you don't have to depend on him for the gifts either. Some people do give presents to people they care about.

[Will he? He hasn't thought about it until now.]

[ Shijima notes the cringe but doesn't bother to call him out on it. It isn't as though she's planning to do much in regards to the war, at the moment. ]

Yes. The humans I lived with used to give me toys. Little stuffed mice. Things with feathers.

[ They are unfortunately not here, so it looks like she's back to not getting anything. Well, she only lived with them for like fifteen years. A drop in the bucket. ]

I brought them real mice, but they did not appreciate it properly.

Real mice. [Right. Cat. He's amused though and breaks into chuckles.]

Well, you know. Some people are just so ungrateful.

They were. And they complained about the flower beds, too.

[He pauses at her question though. He hasn't exactly had the chance to experience a Christmas with some company just yet.]

Ah, nah, not really. Presents were really for actual people, not spirits. [He guesses anyway. Since he never did get anything.]

If cats can get presents, I see no reason a winter spirit can't get them.

[That is actually probably one of the nicest things he's been told. It brings out an actual sincere smile from him.]

Well then, maybe I'll get lucky this year.

Do you think they will set up a tree in the castle? Or will someone have to drag one in?

[ to put presents beneath, she means. She isn't certain how the natives of this place actually celebrate the winter holidays, though they do seem to at least follow some of the traditions from home. The ones she'd observed previously, anyway. ]
