Imps.
[ it's a singular word accompanied by the image of a very unamused and unimpressed older face with eyebrows that even if you couldn't see his mouth might actually show off his displeasure all by themselves. it's clear that he thinks this entire thing is stupid and arguably not real, but then again, robin hood shouldn't be real and he certainly did run into him. ]
There's a planet or two like this. Populated only with small, very— annoying bug creatures. I hate those planets. [ see also: i hate here. ] Try to avoid them unless someone wants to go see them.
[ that's not actually the commentary he means to make about here, but he can't entirely resist it. he clears throat. ] Of all the versions of me to drag here you choose me. Have to wonder if there's something a bit off in your heads. Then again, there's imps and fairies around and involved. Maybe I shouldn't be surprised if there's something off.
[ he sighs. ] If you can take a moment away from whatever it is you're doing right now. I know it's important to you— but this is a bit important to me and it'll take a minute. And it won't kill you to take that minute to listen since you already are. [ he also doesn't entirely care what everyone else is doing right now, but manners, achieving the goal of actually getting someone to pay attention. ] I'm missing a person. My ca— Clara. Her name's Clara, about— [ he motions somewhere south of his shoulder that is a horrible approximation of her actual height. ] that high, wide face. Bossy little thing. Tell her the Doctor's looking for her and that I need to see her even if she doesn't want to see me. I need to make sure she's in one piece if she's here.

[ Don't listen to him, John. He's talking out of his ass. ]
Like? Or are you wanting to leave me in suspense until I pass the centuries mark of some pudding brains here?
video;
video;
You're a solider.
[ That's not a question and yet the Doctor expects an answer. ]
video;
[ He notices that edge. Knowing what he knows, seeing what he's seen, he can't say he blames him. ]
Pretty sure it won't stay that way back home, either because I'll quit or because they'll kick me out. Whichever one happens first.
video;
He stops himself, though, just barely and manages to get out one word. ]
Why? [ He realizes that's not a very good way to frame that question and follows it up with: ] Why won't it stay that way?
[ Soldiers can't leave behind the service any more than he can leave behind being a Time Lord. ]
video;
I've seen enough people killed for no reason.
video;
[ Two simple questions on the surface but to the Doctor they're woefully complex and dictate just how much he might want to talk to John in the future. Despite their different court alliances.
He can deal with soldiers who think like him. Well. Sort of like him. Sometimes you can't really prevent deaths and all. ]
video;
[ are these trick questions ]
My last mission was- a mess. That's putting it lightly.
video;
Massive unwarranted death that told you that getting out of the Marines was a much better idea than staying in? [ Doctor, you don't just ask someone a question like that. ]
video;
video;
[ Said in the tone of of damn boy didn't expect that with an equal helping of — well flatness to be honest. ]
Had to put that on hold here with the war. Last I checked it's not exactly conducive to escaping former occupations.
video;
[ He raises a hand, rubs at the bridge of his nose. ]
Not really, no. Someone -- or something -- attacks me, I'm going to defend myself. And there sure is a lot of that around here.
video;
[ Remember that dry tone up there? Yeah, no, he's using it again, sorry John. ]
Couldn't really defend yourself against being dumped in the ocean.
video;
video;
What about those that aren't directly attacking you?
video;

video;
Curious. [ Unexpected. ] Also a hard thing to do even if you say you will. People like getting into business that isn't theirs.
video;
[ A slight shrug. ]
video;
[ Rude much. ]
So then you're neutral unless being attacked. Most soldiers, former or not wouldn't claim that.
video;
Yeah, well. All the shardbearers from one world die and so does that world. Kind of put things in perspective unless you're an idiot.
video;
It also presents an interesting paradox if two people come from the same world and aren't on the same side.
video;
It's only a paradox if one side actively isn't trying to kill the other one. Which, well... not really a thing, other than most of the shardbearers.
video;
I meant that you can't have the winner get to keep their world if a loser is also from their world. Unless you'd like to argue that they're all coming from different versions of the same world.
