We've all seen the last few transmissions over this network, right? We've all seen it, and we've all been told to be on our guard, but has anyone actually killed one of these things yet? Do we even know how? Or are we expected to swing a sword and hope for the best? [ h u f f ]

[Effy prides herself in everything she does, but if there’s one thing she’s best at, it’s hiding her problems. when Teresa looks off screen, she slides into view with a smile.]

Don’t think swords are going to do much. [if anything.] Got to be another way. Maybe light?

[she arches a brow at Teresa, as though that would be the most helpful (and obvious) solution. they are shadow dogs.]

[ Teresa’s expression doesn’t exactly turn sour, but- ] So... Magic, basically. We should be using magic. [ which she doesn’t have. which obviously bothers her. can’t they just punch these things in the face? she doesn’t mind punching things in the face. especially when they made a point to hurt someone she gives a crap about. ] Okay, let’s work with that, then. We need a plan. With- magic, I guess.

Yes. [she gets it. magic.] Magic. I’m sure someone’s got an idea how to use it. Wizards. Magic users. Anything. The dogs need to go.

[Effy is 100% done with dealing with the dogs, so she really doesn’t want any more contact with them. which is why it’s important someone else deals with it.]

Uh—not exactly. The weapons I got are a part of my gear, and I can't really teach you that.

Let's see... It's something that keeps you air-bound using cables that you can control with a pair of triggers. Those also act as the hilt for each sword you use. All of it's powered by canisters of compressed gas.

That's- impressive. From home, I'm guessing? Did you make it yourself?

Yeah, from home. Nothin' I came up with, though—it's what everyone in the military uses.

Does that mean you wouldn't know how to replicate it if we got the parts together somehow?

I don't have a clue, but even if I did, it takes years of training to be able to use. Nobody here's going to get the hang of it in just a few days.

Oh, no I meant in general, not to be used in the immediate situation. It just sounds really fascinating, that's all. And I'd ask, for later on, if you'd be willing to show me how it works, but I just know I'd end up wanting to poke at it and see how it works, so... Replicating it, that's where my mind went.

I have more of a science background than anything else, but I'm curious about your design because it sounds like it defies whatever counts as technology here. It's useful, and not ..archaic. I was starting to think this place would mess with anything that operates on something other than magic.

[ That gets a raised eyebrow out of him. ]

The technology here isn't much different from what I'm used to. Why wouldn't any of it work?

[ So, yeah, he's still painfully unaware of anything that could count as modern technology. ]

Is there magic in your world?

[ After a beat, Eren shakes his head. ]

There isn't any, but that has nothing to do with technology. Right?

Here it seems to. Maybe it's not the magic itself that's making technology fritz, but nothing that runs on batteries seems to work properly here, things seem to run on magic instead. Your suit gives me hope that there's ways around it.

The only thing that would be tricky to replicate is the compressed air.

[ Now there's some terminology that confuses him. ]

And what're batteries supposed to do?

They're- an energy source. Battery cells convert chemical energy into electricity. [ but she sounds distracted while she's talking about it because she's so not used to having to explain that ] Where are you from?

[ Electricity...? This is the first he's ever heard of it, but—okay, an energy source. That sort of makes sense, but only a little; he still can't think of anything that would need it, whatever it is.

Her following question catches him somewhat off guard, if only because it feels wholly irrelevant to anything they were talking about. But he does have enough sense to figure there probably is a point behind it—he just can't see what it is. ]

My hometown's called Shiganshina—it's a district along Wall Maria. [ While Eren explains it casually, in that manner as if he'd expect anyone to know anything about what he's telling, in the end he... doesn't. No one has ever mentioned any walls. In fact, no one seems to have lived the world he does. And she's already talking about several things he's yet to ever hear of. After a beat: ] Why?
