( the look on lydia's face is both determined and harried. she's discovered something about the lawkamercyme, as well as herself. her voice is a harsh whisper, and she seems to be creeping around just outside of caer glaem. )

I can kill them. By myself, I can -- ( she sees one of the creatures approaching. quickly, she sets her locket down. in the frame is a massive lawkamercyme. in the background, there are two or three smaller ones approaching. lydia rights herself and approaches slowly, her back to the locket. but it's clear she's going to face them head on. and they notice her. she just so happened to catch one of the nymphs shouting the name of the creatures before falling unconscious, and just hours prior, she found herself hunted by one of the fearsome things. she opened her mouth and channeled her banshee abilities and screamed its name, and it disappeared. so now, as all four of them turn toward her, she draws a deep breath.

through the network of lockets everyone will be able to hear a piercing scream, recognizable as the name 'lawkamercyme'. supernatural beings will pick up on her scream even without their lockets, as her voice is capable of traveling over at least two to three miles of distance to those with heightened hearing. the shadows seem to be jolted by her voice, and in just a matter of moments, they disappear. vanished. gone. after she's sure the coast is clear she turns, breathless, back to the network. )

I can destroy them.

I'm lucky that I have my best friend, and my -- teacher, sort of? I'm learning more about combat, even without my abilities. So I can handle myself better without access to the chemicals and technology I'm used to.

I can understand that. The queen has bestowed upon me the former potion master's great tome. It would be considered witchcraft back home, but here it is a weapon, and perhaps the only one I hold.

Not all magic is bad, anyway. Though, back then... ( a-HEH- the bark of a laugh ) I can see why you'd be bothered by it. Luckily there's nobody around to persecute you.

It wouldn't benefit anyone. [Because there are certainly tales of old women who practice in towns and cities. But they hardly ever have political gain.]

I only mean it would not benefit anyone here to punish witches or those practicing. Even back home, while some who are overzealous may persecute those who are practicing, it is more uncommon to have those in high ranking positions be accused. Or try to be. It is more about power than religion, I think.

Think about the fundamental views of each court. They oppose each other because one values control and the other values freedom. However, both courts seem to have an aristocratic system in place. Monarchies. Royalty, who have the power. Clearly it's a vie for whose version of good government controls the entire Drabwurld.

So it is an endless fight. Until one gains control of the other. For as long as this has gone out, I wonder if all of the options have been exhausted. What keeps them going?

I think it's us. I think something about the shards is the key to this entire mess. But I don't think they even know what it is, or how to harness it. Otherwise I doubt they would be so vague. In the meantime, we're basically cannon fodder.

And they take those who have shards when people like us lose them. Perhaps you are right about the shards being the key to this.

There have been tales of ancient crystal skulls throughout the world for centuries. They're meant to wield incredible power, but that's only something of a myth among archaeologists. The skulls themselves, the ones they've found anyway, seem to just be crystals in the shape of a human head. But maybe these shards are all pieces of a larger whole, something they can wield as a weapon for themselves.

What do our shards have to do with the crystals?

Oh, nothing necessarily. It's just a comparison. Maybe these shards are all part of a greater whole.
