As some of you are aware, there was a fire in Caer Glaem's library. An intruder was in the buidling.

As it stands, we as shardholders are the strongest thing our court has to defend itself. If the shardholders of the other court come to us the footsoldiers will be cut down all too easily -- a shardholder is worth 30 or so of the other soldiers.

If we are to defend Caer Glaem therefore we must help in not just leaving her to pursue alliances and fight enemies, but by the stationing of guards. We must keep track of who enters and leaves our city, be vigilant against agents of Morla scouting us out or attacks against us. As you may already be aware myself and Sir Grimm are holding training all through this month for anyone who wishes to learn, but this will require people good at keeping records too.

Well, that or we go on a broader offensive. Give your enemies too many battles to fight and they'll lose their edge.

An offensive without an established defence first would be a poor strategy, surely? If all our best were to leave Caer Glaem again without a defence in place we would be exposed. Both can be done, but we must secure our city before we send more out of it.

I may be still be new, but I will be glad to assist in anyway that I can.

[A sad look enters his eyes for a moment.]

My wife was quiet distressed by the damage to the library even though it was only a few shelves. We are lucky that was the only damage, though. It was foolish of us to leave this place so unprotected.

I would not call myself skilled at record keeping, but I know well how to defend a city.

Any help would be appreciated, I assure you. The more people who come forward, the more likely we will have someone on hand should this happen again.

Then would you put yourself forward? We can always pair you with someone better adept at keeping records, it would be no trouble.

I'll not pledge myself to remaining within the walls indefinitely, but while I am here, I am willing to stand for the protection of Caer Glaem.

You do not have to, I assure you. My hope is that if we have enough people a rotation can be built so that nobody is forced to stand for too long, but the city remains safe.

It is a good thought, and I will aid you in this as best as I can.

What records is it that you are looking to keep?

Even simple records would be a start. At the moment we have nothing to say who is entering and leaving Caer Glaem. If we can find a way to slowly make sure we keep track of that, and perhaps to keep track of who we should be recognising -- some way to register all our Seelie... then once records are built it should be a matter of checking only. Of course such things can be forged, stolen, etc, but it is still better than nothing.

...ah, I believe I heard about that earlier... really, I can't believe something like this actually happened.

[He lets out a frustrated sigh.]

Well, I've done a fair bit of record keeping in my time, and I'm thinking that I'll be spending some time in Caer Glaem while I get acclimated... so for now, perhaps I could aid on that front.

Indeed. What do you have in mind so far? I have a wide range of skills and I do not need to eat or sleep, so I can cover periods of time that might be harder for others to handle.

[Perhaps he should not be volunteering himself like this without checking with his lord first, but considering Kayneth has talked about taking advantage of the fact they have others they can work with here, Diarmuid has a feeling there will be no objection.]

Hey, normally, I'd agree--but, right now the Unseelie're rumored to be trouncing this court left and right.

You've gotta make a daring and dangerous move to avert that kinda thing. Battles where you play things too safely are ones you lose the hardest.

How many people have been in and out of the library since then? I can do a late investigation of the scene, and see what evidence I come up with that might point to a culprit — it's what I do back home.

As for guards... [ ah, this is a dilemma. normally, well, back home, he'd be all over this. he's probably be doing the guarding, at least until he got promoted. but in the draubworld, mako feels like he needs to stick with bolin and korra, all things considered. ] I'm not sure how long we're staying at the castle, but my friend Korra and I can help with that. She's already patrolling in the evenings, I think... and I can get the records started.

[ pause. ]

Well. Lancelot is reasonably good at acting, he's top of the class on innocent face. Mostly. He's better at keeping other people's secrets than his own. It's a very selective ability to lie. On top of that? Well, Caer Glaem needs as much help as it can get. ]

The damage itself was minimal, but the fact that they were within out city so easily is a real problem that must be addressed. Any help with keeping record would be welcome. As it stands there are none, so the starting point is rather literally a blank canvas. We need to make sure we keep details of who comes and goes as best we can, and hopefully once we have a good amount of information we should only need to reference it to allow people to pass.

It is hard to say how many exactly -- during the fire several came in and out to rescue the books and stop it spreading, and I do not believe the area was closed off after the fact. Several of our guards were around, nobody saw the fire being set but the person themselves may have been seen within Caer Glaem. The only trouble is we have no way of knowing from a description who is one of our own and who is not. New people arrive enough that I cannot recognise every face. The person who set it could have been unseelie, or could equally have been one of our own -- I am assuming the former publicly but Ridire has warned me we may have a spy in Caer Glaem. A spy could be an unseelie posing as one of our own or equally by one of our own passing information. Equally, it could well have been an accident, but with things as they are I find that hard to believe.

Either way, the need to tighten out security is paramount. Any help you can provide would be welcome. I have had another man volunteer to help with records, he claims to have experience. Perhaps you might work together?

Our volunteers are sadly lacking so far. I am hoping more will come in time. I have had two come forward to agree to help start records -- if we can at least get those going then we have a point of reference for who belongs here and who does not. Appearances alone will not tell us who is seelie and who is unseelie, so it is a difficult process likely laborious but I have hope it will be of some benefit. As for guards, if we have enough I hope to try and begin a rotation of sorts. To allow everyone free time but keep some shardholders on hand at all times.

On the one hand -- I agree, we do need to strike out. To fight back. However... I would be uncomfortable taking our best out after so recent an incursion until we at least have a defence strategy in place. It is true the Unseelie have us on the run, but that is exactly why the defences need to be restored first. If we leave to fight the Unseelie at home and our court is taken while we are away then we are undone. The Unseelie are winning themselves allies now, more so than we have. Morla will make a move soon, and I want to be sure these walls will hold against it if it comes to it.

Ahhh. Well, you can figure out that kinda thing if you like. I'm not one for sitting around and fortifying walls.

[Casually said--]

I'm more for breaking them down, y'know? Regardless, though, I'm gonna be headed on patrol and looking for enemies that qualify.

[Diarmuid frowns.]

That unsettles me. We were extremely lucky this time. Do people not see that? Are they too wrapped up in themselves to realize that we could have lost everything?

[Not everyone here is a fighter, far from that, but still many of them are. There is no excuse for being this lax...]

Your plan seems solid, though. We just need to find a way to get enough people to help out.

Can't say that I'll always be around the castle, but I'll be happy to help out when I am.

You know I'm in. Might be good to talk to the kennel master, too; see if we have dogs that aren't just used for hunting. War dogs, guard dogs.

I fear a lot of them were given to shardholders when the lawkamercy were running rampant, but I will ask regardless. Have you experience securing a location this way? Forgive me if the question is foolish, it is more that I am trying to gather a range of styles and ideas than my doubting of you. Our worlds are different, and so I imagine are things such as this.

That is all I ask -- that people help when they are able.

[It's perhaps a good idea, but Idril does have some reservations -- not the least of which that she has some family in the Unseelie court.]

I attended the fire shortly after it was set. An alarm was raised and the gates closed following nigh immediately. Our intruder was swift indeed and perhaps aided by means beyond our comprehension or knowledge. [Or Morla herself. It's hard to say.] Setting guards on the wall or in these corridors may do you little good against such attacks.
