[Well, someone's experimenting with the locket's video function! Someone... smug. He's smiling about something, though his attention seems less focused on addressing the viewers than it could be at the moment.]

Quite remarkable, isn't it? Ah, I wonder if they have extras they wouldn't mind parting with? I'd love to see what sorts of enchantments are put on these...

[Then he seems to realize now isn't the time to nerd out, and addresses the locket a bit more directly.]

But that's for later --- for now, introductions are in order, I believe. I am Lord Kayneth El-Melloi, Ninth Head of the Archibald House...

[...he trails off a bit, looking a bit like he's forgotten himself again, and then shifts gears a bit.]

Of course, if there's anyone here who recognizes the significance of that, I suppose I'd like to speak to them more directly.

As for the rest of you... well, if we are to be allies, I wouldn't mind opening up discussion of anything that would make our victory more certain. In particular, I'd like to know about other worlds' magic, both yours and our enemies'. Admittedly, that's almost more for curiosity's sake rather than purely strategic purposes. This is a rare opportunity indeed, and I'm not one to squander it.

[His enthusiasm does fade a bit, though, as he thinks on it more.]

Though, really, I'm certain I'm not the only person here who was brought here while in the middle of something extremely time-sensitive, am I? Have they made arrangements for that sort of thing? I'm aware of legends of how this sort of thing tends to go, and I'd rather not return home to find out that a whole century's passed.

[Okay, Flora isn't human, and she's only been around them regularly for a short while comparatively but that "El-Melloi" part gives her pause. It could be a coincidence, but she's going to make a point to check in with a certain someone just in case.

Anyway, she turns the feed on, dips her head respectfully, and smiles.]

Greetings, my lord, my name is Flora, and it a pleasure to make your acquaintance, even if the circumstances are not ideal. You might find yourself very interested about the magic here, since people ask for more on top of what they may or may not have.

[Tactically speaking, it's a big mess, but she's a curious thing and it seems so is he, so she's pretty enthusiastic at the prospect of talking about magic. As always.

A pleasure to meet you as well, Miss Flora, and... well, the circumstances could be worse, I suppose. I could be trapped somewhere that's a complete bore, after all.

And what do you mean by that? Are we talking magical artifacts and that sort of thing...?

...hah, I suspected as much. Well, it does give them a prime opportunity to scout out our abilities, I'll give them that...

Anyway, the legends I was talking about... well, people would be spirited away by the fairies, and time would pass differently for them in their realm. They may feel as though they'd spent a year or even a few days there, but when they'd leave, they'd... oh, die of old age or find out that it was several decades later. Something like that, anyway.

Well, my lord, the short of it is that this place is the furthest thing from boring, for better or worse, and you can probably guess which side of the line things usually fall on. [A short exhale.] Anyway, the monarchs reward anyone who participate in missions or does as they ask with a boon of their choosing, with some limitations. Their powers and reach are absolutely immense. It's not uncommon for people to ask for magic in some way, shape, or form like artifacts, tomes, and the like, or it will be directly given to you.

[Yeah, she's not even going to pretend she's not mildly horrified by that. She's confident that that hasn't actually happened on her iteration of Earth, at least, but it doesn't surprise her necessarily, because ~*magic*~

Still, talk about a tough break.

[Oh yes, he mentioned the lockets, didn't he? They're lovely, but not terribly remarkable to her, since such things aren't hard to come by where she's from. But, there's absolutely no way to say that in a way that doesn't come off snobbish and superior, so she just won't.]

Perhaps they'll give you another one if you ask, but there may be something about the enchantments in the library, though I can't say myself.

Forgive me for the locked message, but I have found a bit of information you may find interesting. Apparently, there is a way to tap into the shard that is inside of each of us and draw power from it. I am going to learn more about how this is done as we speak.

Oh, I can imagine that it may be somewhat... dicey at times; still, if you ask me, boredom's worse than both. And those sound like fantastic rewards, actually... I suppose I'll have to keep my schedule open for missions they'll send us on, then.

Anyway, do you know if they can bring objects we may have left? There was something I was carrying when I was brought here, but I apparently misplaced it. I'm doubting the more unfortunate legends myself, but I don't doubt they can bring us objects from home...

Well, I was planning on plunging into the library headfirst when I had the opportunity... but I'd really not accidentally destroy the one I have if I try to make any modifications.

Yes, well, be careful what you wish for on both counts, my lord. I can definitely say there's not a shortage of things to do. Every month something happens that needs taking care of, which doesn't take into account other tasks might ask of us, and on top of that there's still the world at large to see.

[And if she's being honest, she's a little worried about what'll happen this month.]

I suppose it depends on what sort of object it is. If it's technological, there might not be much point if you haven't found that out, yet. What were you looking to get, if I might ask, my lord?

Hmm, yeah, there's no telling., so that is a wise precaution. I'm guessing that the enchantments may not be too complicated in and of themselves, but there might be very specific ones for the network at large.

They also just might be tamper-proof, or doing anything at all to them might be a bad idea, no matter how innocuous it might seem.

I actually have heard of that myself... possibly from the same source, thinking about it. I'm really interested in seeing what I'll be able to do with it, though.

You know, thinking about it, I'm wondering if that's what's what's keeping you in existence here, rather than a mana source or any sort of Master-Servant connection. I don't think there's a way to safely test it, of course, but I suppose it's something to keep in mind.

Was it from a joint post to the lockets made by two men with the names John and Lancelot? If so, it is them who I am on the way to meet. To train with actually. I am going to see if they can train me how to tap into my shard. I will be glad to show you the process once I learn it or I can give your name to them as someone who would like to speak with them.

It would make sense if the shard had something to do with it. That is something I wondered about as well. It might not be safe to test any theories right now, but perhaps if I do gain some control over my shard I can learn if it is the source.

I had the same plan, actually, though I'm planning on setting up a workshop in my room first. I'd rather be prepared in the event that something does go wrong with it, as one of them let me know that it can be dangerous if done improperly.

Well, perhaps one of us could also ask the monarchs when we finally do get an audience with them, but that's my best guess at present.

That it can be dangerous was not mentioned to me, but all things considered it only makes sense. What were you told of the dangers? Perhaps I can find out more when I go to my training.

If people are freely advertising that they are willing to teach how using your shard works, the monarchs much be okay with it. Hopefully, they will also be okay with telling us more about how it is done.

As long as it's something I can actually prepare for, I doubt I'll have too much difficulty with that. Still, it does seem like they really plan on keeping us busy, doesn't it...?

And oh, it's definitely not technological. It's magical in nature, so it should work perfectly fine here, barring any interference from the local magic. Back home, it would be called a Mystic Code, but I suppose here you could call it an artifact?

And really, using magic to begin with always has some sort of risk to it going wrong, at least where I'm from. I wouldn't attempt it without taking some precautions.

Um, it really depends on how you'd like to define "preparation". [She looks both wry and awkward before sighting a little.] Response has been pretty great, for the most part, but nobody could be all that proactive for the fairies getting sick, or the giant, venomous worms, or the shadow monsters, to name a few. I mean some people are used to those sorts of things, but it's still nice to know when they might happen. Unfortunately, you might have to expect the unexpected.

No, not really. I'm a bit lower in status than that... you know, landed nobility and that type of thing.

It's apparently very dangerous if you do it by accident or if you do it improperly, which... well, I suspect I can imagine how that goes. Also, even if you do it properly, the first few times are apparently completely exhausting.

Yes, and if there are any conditions to your presence here, given your... odd circumstances as a Servant. I'm suspecting you may just be incarnate, but I suppose it can't hurt to ask them about it.

Hmm...the exhaustion is not something that was mentioned to me either, though it is another important thing. This is certainly not something you would want to first do in the middle of a battlefield by the sound of it!

[Incarnate, hu? That is not something Diarmuid has thought about, but it does make sense. Would he stop being so if he somehow lost his shard? So many questions...]

If we can find answers to even a fraction of the questions we have about the shards, we are going to be very lucky. No wonder this battle has been going on so long.

...Some of those sound a bit easier to deal with than others, though I suspect that the one that sounds the most innocuous could be the absolute worst. Still, it can be a bit difficult to prepare for illnesses regardless, especially without modern medicine... they do know you should wash your hands here, don't they...?

Anyway, it's 140 kilograms of mercury that I've enchanted to have some interesting properties. I think if I manage to obtain it, a visual demonstration would be much more satisfying than a description.

No, not really. It's something you get used to fairly quickly, though.

Yes, they do, my lord, however that won't do much against some magical illnesses, especially when the symptoms include being overcome with rage and hatred and pelting others with hot coals or other things. It wasn't your usual kind of cold.[She was responsible for some of those Other Things, but let's just...not visit that for a moment.] Taking care of it was relatively easy, though just a bit time-consuming if that, but I'm speaking more for myself. They responded to all sorts of healing magic, and might have given you or led you to treasure for your troubles.

Oh, that sounds very fascinating. I should like to see it...but it's mercury. Isn't that poisonous? Did you find some way around that?

[Flora considers herself pretty patient and adaptable by nature (ha), but even that might test her, a little. Goodness gracious how to people with magic live.]

I suppose it takes a person of a certain calibre to do that, but if it's what you know then that's how it is. Still, it sounds like you're courting death or disaster, every time. Is magic a big part of life where you come from?

I make music. Well, compose, mostly. I'm thinking maybe with help I can do an entire musical based on the court system. I think it's going to be really good, I just need to learn a little more about the people brought in like you and everyone else, and maybe more about the Unseelie, though I'm kind of worried about this whole war thing--ooh, but that's okay, because Ryan's probably going to choreograph them. Maybe you can be in it if you like to sing, or dance, or even just to help out with costumes and stuff, and--

...ah, that is indeed far more distressing than I would've thought. I suppose it wouldn't be terribly difficult to deal with if that particular issue did crop up again given that I have some healing magic, but let's hope it doesn't.

Oh, of course. There are some wards that I can use to make it safe to work with, so it's only really a danger if I need it to be.

Honestly, it's only that dangerous if you're bad at it or dealing with something terribly risky. If you know what you're doing, it's only a bit painful. But... I suppose you could say that, yes.

I would hope that no one contemplated just going ahead and doing it on their own, but people don't always do the intelligent thing.
