[ Lancelot is, to be brutally honest, still a little rubbish with these things. He's getting the hang of it, though, and he thinks he's doing this right -- but if he sounds terribly hesitant it's because he isn't entirely convinced. ]

Has anyone business up the Western Road? I have a message to be carried to someone there. Her name is Alyosha of Redgate. It is important.

[ ... well, well. that name just keeps popping up all over the place, doesn't it? ]

What sort of message?

[ There's a pause as he fumbles around a little, trying to remember how to do this properly -- and the quiet sound of him saying stop that. It's not you, Korra, he just asked a fairy for help and now it won't stop annoying him. ]

There, I believe this is private -- Alyosha's life may in danger. Have you been a part of the battle? There is a man named Reynard the Fox who has brought his banners to the Unseelie. I spoke with him before he turned, and he said the price of helping the Seelie would be 5 heads. Hers was among them. She must be made aware that Reynard turned on a party of Seelie, that he calls for her head and that the Seelie will not bargain with him again. That we now call for his. Perhaps she can be persuaded to bring her banner to us, all things considered.

[ ... That would be Korra. She is now 'the young lady'. ]

[ Leave the poor knight his formalities. There's a pause as tries to remember the right way to make this conversation private (everything is so complicated, good lord) then squints at the static picture of John on his locket -- ]

I spoke to you at the battle, did I not? Do you recall everything that was said about Reynard and his banner-men?

[ It isn't exactly forgettable but just checking. ]

That's me. And I remember -- kind of hard to forget something like that.

[ There's a little bit of a growl to his voice as John adds: ] Especially after the bastard and his forces killed almost all of mine.

Yeah, I was there. [ the growl in her voice is unmistakable, and she has to remember to breathe so that she doesn't end up lashing out at this poor soul too. ] I left near the end because...

[ it's still hard to actually say, so she huffs and just — lets it go. ]

It doesn't matter.

[ focus on the quest, korra. focus on getting all the information you can before you leave for redgate. ]

...I've been doing some research into Alyosha, and all the records say she's Unseelie.

[ so what's this supposed to do, lancelot?? ]

Such things are not set in stone. If Queen Morla has bargained with someone who asks for her head, we have leverage to persuade her to help us instead. Who would you rather work with? The people who wish you dead, or the people who would take out those who wish you dead?

[ korra's about to shoot back "i don't want anyone dead," but she realizes after a second that the question is not necessarily posed at her, but rather to help her see what lancelot is getting at.

sighing, korra rubs at the side of her face, closing her eyes. guess there's no point in telling this guy that she and alyosha are likely to not get along anyway because haha korra's supposed to revive a dragon who killed her kids. ]

You've got a point there. I can give it a shot.

[ He hesitates, recognising the uncertainty in her tone, then sighs a little. Lancelot's tone drops a little, a little graver. ]

I have reason to believe the Unseelie are recruiting all those they can to their side, that Reynard and his soldiers are just the beginning. If they are, it will be important we do the same or we will be outmanned. They have been more aggressive than us in their attack. Next time we may not get the chance to broker a deal.

[ So. No pressure, Korra, but don't fuck this up. ]

I attempted to broker a deal with him before he turned on us. He gave the price of his allegiance as the heads of 5 people. Alyosha was among them. You have seen what the man can do. Her life may be in danger, and more than that -- if Reynard has aligned himself with Morla she may be persuaded to our side. Ridire has said taking Reynard's life will now be rewarded. Given the option, she may work with us rather than with someone who employs those who would see her dead.

It's been my experience that people like them [ the unseelie, that is ] work one of two ways: they either try to get a lot of people to their side [ like tarrlok ] or they think they can do it all on their own.

[ like unalaq. ]

Good to know we're dealing with the first kind.

[ all right, girl. no pressure, but this quest just went from spirits to political and... that's part of the job, right? of the avatar. to be a leader of the people, to deal with spirits and humans, and keep balance and peace in every realm.

sheesh, these monarchs really did their research, didn't they? ]

All right, I'll make sure your message gets to her, and I'll convince her to join our side.

[ all the while... reviving the dragon under her nose, i guess?? ]

[ "lance"? like the weapon? okay, she can be friends with this guy. ]

It's Korra. [ there's a moment where she squares her shoulders back, pulling her spine up straight. ] ... I'm the Avatar.

[ she doesn't care if she has to explain it a million times — she's not going to let go of her title, even here. not when the monarchs keep asking her to do things an avatar should do. ]

'The Avatar?'

[ The question is clear in his tone, and after a hesitation he adds: ]

Forgive me, the title is unfamiliar.

[ there's a soft breath, an exhale of a laugh before — ]

No one here is. Where I come from, people are either benders or non-benders, and depending on family [ along with a lot of other stuff it's a lot of handwave-y things that bryke haven't written out in 100% detail ] they can bend either water, earth, fire or air.

[ a pause there to let him digest that. ]

I can bend all four. Ten thousand years ago, one of my past lives fused with the spirit Raava, who embodies peace and light — because of that, it's my duty to find the balance between people and spirits.

[ John swears. ]

I can pass on the message. Whether it encourages her to help us or not, she should be warned.

[ Sigh. ]

Do you have the names of the others he wants dead?

[ If Lancelot was inclined toward swearing he would have too, to be honest. ]

I have asked the same of Lady Korra, but... considering the danger, the more people who carry the message... the more likely it will reach its destination.

[ A grim thought, but you know what he means. If Korra winds up dead, better she isn't the only one trying to warn Alyosha. ]

The other two are Sose, a sylph of the Sisterhood, and Isengrim the Wolf.

You can... 'bend' these elements?

[ Okay, but... what is... bending... because Lancelot is imagining literal bending and it is... well, a little peculiar. ]

[ hhhhh explaining, okay: ]

I can use my chi — my natural energy — to control them.

[ He knows. It's not a thought he particularly wants to dwell on (though he probably will), but he knows. ]

I haven't heard of the other two, but I'll keep an eye out.

[ kjkdhf;ksd NO. when will people get understand that bending isn't magic. bending takes hard work and discipline, learning different fighting styles and requiring a certain amount of spirituality before anything can be accomplished.

Not really, but if that's what helps you understand it, then let's go with that.

Where I am from, anyone with control over the world around them in such a way would be deemed a sorcerer. Some may be more proficient than others, some may find it natural while others work hard to learn the skill, but it is all deemed sorcery nonetheless. Forgive me if the term does not fit for you, but it is simply what I am used to.

From what you say -- you are more skilled than most in your world?

Yeah, most benders can only control one element — I can control all four.

I have a friend who has such a skill. Not -- bending, exactly, just... the natural power to shape the world around him, with more ease or skill than most others who have any ability.
