[ The audio feed begins with the sound of a muted tapping. ]

Is this on?

[ He taps it again, and a young man with spiky, black hair appears. He's peering...much too closely at his locket, but eventually he leans back, the scar on his left cheek becoming visible. For those familiar with the area, the training grounds in Caer Glaem are behind him.

Satisfied that it's on, he smiles a bit. ]

Hi. [ Awkwardly, he scratches the back of his head. ] I'm sure it's pretty obvious to those of you who've been here a while that I'm new.

I've already gotten a few different versions of what's going on here so I think I should be good in that respect.

[ Oh Zack, you sweet summer child. Moving right alone, though, he has other things to say. ]

Since it's a war we're here to fight, I'd like to know if there's anyone around who'd like to spar sometime - hand-to-hand or with weapons.

Also, if there are any places you'd recommend visiting, I'd like to know!

[ A large black head nudges him roughly, and after a soft "hey!" Zack turns briefly to pet his horse's face. A large sword becoming visible, hanging on his back before he looks back at the locket. He flashes a small, sheepish smile. ]

Any tips on riding horses would be good, too. Thanks.

You'd like to spar?

[ HEY. Hermione peers in through her locket, a small smile on her face. ]

I might be able to help with riding, too, but - I'm not a professional.

[ Heeey, girl, hey. c:

Zack seems to be saying something to his horse, but stops when he's hailed on the locket. ]

Well, I like to, but I think it's practical too.

[ He smiles a bit. ]

Considering we don't really have horses where I'm from, you're probably professional compared to me.

[ Just sayin'. ]

Settled on her sofa, Hermione nods her head. ]

I've been working up to sparring regularly, to make sure that I don't forget the things I've been taught. I wouldn't mind sparring, if you'd like to.

[ But he does have a point. ]

At least I can see these horses, which makes a change from some that I rode at home. It's nice to meet you, Zack - I'm Hermione.

[ Hello, Pretty Lady. c: ]

I think I could help you out with that.

[ He'll just have to watch his strength. That next comment makes him tilt his head a little, though. ]

[ A beat, then- ]

Why couldn't you see them?

[ Stop that. ]

Good! Caer Glaem has a really nice training yard, if you'd like to use that? We could definitely arrange a time.

[ Oh. She smiles, shaking her head. ]

There's a magical creature in my world called a Thestral, large, black horses with wings. The only problem is that you can only seen them if you've seen death.

[ ... If you've seen someone die. ]

The only advice I may offer concerning those beasts is to keep your distance.

[ Is he still mad about that time when the death hounds attacked? Yeah, he's still mad. ]

[ The cute doesn't have an off botton, jsyk. ]

I've looked at it, actually! I'd like that.

[ As for Thestrals...well. He seems to take that with more of a thoughtful air than anything else. ]

I probably would have seen them, then.

[ SOLDIER, you know. ]

Are there a lot of creatures like that where you're from?

Can I ask why?

[ Tell him about it, bro. ]

[ Swoons... ]

Then we can make the arrangements. I'm more used to professional duelling than sword fighting, since that's what I've been taught, but I'd really like to learn to use a sword better.

[ Since the battles are getting worse and magic isn't always the best solution.

She swallows before she nods. ]

The first time I saw them I didn't see them, but at the end of that year I could. [ She nods her head, slowly. ] They're classified as a five cross, which means they're almost impossible to domesticate, the same as creatures like chimaera, manitcore, dragons and basilisks.

[ He'd really rather not. ]

I have found them to be mercurial beasts, easily frightened and ill-suited to battle. On few occasions did I have the displeasure of riding one before I requested of the monarchs a more reliable mount in its stead.

[ Well, in that case... ]

I'll admit, I wasn't really planning on riding any into battle.

[ He's used to fighting on foot. ]

I appreciate the warning.

[ Oh boy.... Professional dueling.

Zack rubs the back of his head. ]

My style isn't exactly formal. [ A beat, then - ] I learned with a longsword myself, but I'll probably have a better idea of what I can show you once we get started.

[ Magic isn't always the best, no, but it is helpful, at least? Especially healing magic.

Zack hums softly. ]

We have dragons too, where I'm from. [ Some of the others sound vaguely familiar. ] Most of the creatures we see back home are all over the world and tend to attack any travelers they encounter. Most people who leave the cities usually don't go unless they're armed.

In time you may well find that whatever you plan counts for little, if aught in this world.

At any rate, a moment passes before he decides he should try to be at least a little helpful. ]

This world hosts a variety of steeds, some better suited to war than others. I myself favor the chocobo, though I believe their numbers in Glaschu are few as of yet.

I kind of figured that since I wasn't really planning on being here.

[ You know. They just picked up his bloody corpse and decided to bring him in.

They have chocobos here??

Aye, though none are native to this land.

[ More pressingly than that, though— ]

[ The Unseelie girl he had spoken with ages ago — she knew of them as well, though she knew nothing of Ivalice. But this man, perhaps... ]

You should've mentioned sparring earlier. I'm pretty good with bladed sparring, unless you want a surprise or two.

[sup Zack it's your new bff. And he's just...going to eye the horse with a raised eyebrow.]

Chocobos are what people ride where I'm from.

I didn't own one, but people catch them and domesticate them all the time.

[ Hello, brand new friend. c: He smiles sheepishly. ]

I kinda had a lot on my mind.

[ Death, dying, a new world and a new war to fight....those kinds of things. ]

That depends on what kind of surprise you're talking about.

[ He's all right with those too. ]

And whence have you come, precisely?

[ Already Gabranth doubts that he could truly be from Ivalice...but even if he is, what then? Does he really want to meet someone from Ivalice here, someone who might know him for who he once was, now that he lies broken, powerless and shamed? ]

[ Hermione, for her part, looks a little sheepish as well, shaking her head. ]

Formal isn't really going to help in a real battle, is it? An actual duel, yes, but when you're out there? Bowing to people and dancing around with your weight could get you into a little bit of trouble. I'd love to learn anything you could show me, if that would be alright... I have my duelling rapier and an actual sword, too, so we can experiment.

[ Magic is definitely the best.

It's the same here. In my world most magical creatures aren't around in my country, but there are officials that are trained to take care of them or keep them away from people that might not be able to protect themselves. We don't have to worry so much about them attacking us when we travel, though...

If you want to know how to ride a horse, There are few here better to teach you then me! I was raised around the beasts and am more then sure I'd be able to pass what I know along without much difficulty.

Mm...I would say it's good you know a form and have a foundation to work with, but a real battle doesn't really have rules or boundaries.

Some things are familiar, at least. [ Monster roaming around all over, it's a day ending in 'y'. ] Is there any way I can learn more about the creatures that do live here?

[ He's sure they must be different. ]

[ It's for the best, really. ]

[ Somehow he feels both disappointed and like he just caught a break. ]

I hail from Ivalice, where chocobos are likewise the common mount and horses are rarely aught but feral beasts. Long ago I came into contact with one other in this Drabwurld who knew of them, and owned a number of them herself, but the world she spoke of was neither yours nor my own.

You'll find that most here, whether native or fellow shardbearer, will not have nearly as much familiarity.
